On Friday, April 20, the Commissioner of Education took away the bargaining rights of Teachers and Support Staff in the Pulaski County Special School District. He claimed that in order for the district to get out of fiscal distress, he needed to take their contractual rights. The District loped off 2 days from teachers and support staff contracts, cut professional growth pay, eliminated retirement bonuses, increased the price of student lunches, but administrators lost no days and no salary and they have spent over $300,000 on lawyers and consultants. The Governor supports the Commissioner in his move to eliminate two bargaining agreements.
Citizens have no voice in how tax dollars are spent and decisions made when a district is placed in fiscal distress.
