Bill Clinton had three years of budget surpluses to the point that Wall Street was scared that they were going to run out of debt to sell. Then came "W" who cut taxes and started a war, with The Great Recession as a result. I believe the GOP is going to have the deficit issue cut out from under them if Obama ends his term with a budget balanced or even in surplus in the year 2016 (There is a good chance of it - its not a pipe dream). It will help Hillary remind voters how the last time that happened was when a Clinton was in charge and if the GOP puts up a deficit hawk like Paul Ryan against her, it will make them look stupid as well as mean.

I recall commenting to my wife how much I liked the tan suit. Glad to see the opposite reaction from Congressman Peter King, the most boneheaded reactionary blow hard out there, excepting Donald Trump.

I think its a Republican executive thing where those in charge of corporations lavish all sort of perks on themselves while reducing costs elsewhere. Connecticut had Republican Governor John Roland who ended his tenure in jail because he didn't have the money to live in the style that he thought he was entitled to as governor. McDonnell and his wife suffered from the same sense of entitlement.

    It's getting worse.

Today's is: "ISIS Tightens Its Grip With Seizure of Air Base in Syria."

"Recent military advances by ISIS in northern and eastern Syria have highlighted the lack of local military forces that can effectively battle the group, which President Obama last week called a “cancer” that must be eradicated from the Middle East."

Unlike in Iraq where there is a sane well organized opposition on the ground like the pesh merga Kurdish forces; it appears that Assad, distasteful as he may be requires help to contain ISIS because he is not up to it. I believe that the Iran came to same conclusion when deciding to put Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon to help him out earlier this year. And so there you have it, in order to fight ISIS Obama is going to have to make nice to Iran and let Iran help Assad contain ISIS with their proxy ISIS, Hezbollah. Welcome to the middle east reality.

Thanks for pointing out Jared's comment on Foley execution. This thread was a reaction to the New York Times headline where our generals are looking to expand airstrikes into Syria. I am the last person that wants that! I hope that Obama understands the moral compromise necessary to make air power effective. And mostly importantly effective for whom or what purpose?

Airstrikes in Iraq Are Seen as Inadequate to Defeat a Foe That Crosses Borders is the start of a mindless escalation equivalent to Nixon's airstrikes into Cambodia during Vietnam war. If Obama wants to fight ISIS in Syria he has to make a deal with the devil. He needs Assad, Iran and Hezbolla to assist on the ground with our air support otherwise bombing Syria is useless.

This headline in the New York Times today leaves me seething in expletives toward Obama and how far he has gone to the dark side.

Currently there is a pox on both houses. Israel builds more settlements and Hamas more tunnels from Gaza into Israel. We can pontificate about the history and causes all we want but the final matter is that there is no trust on either side. The fuse is lit and its too close to the bomb for anything to be done other than to wait for the explosion.

Obama is said to consider Air Strikes in Iraq. Don't do it. It puts us on the side of the Maliki Shia and effectively takes us out of the position as intermediary in a civil war. Besides, haven't we learned that airstrikes only harden the opposition?
