With all recent events, gigantic floods, earthquakes, nuclear power plant mishaps, such as the one in Japan, and more severe weather disasters, and anomalies --- we are beginning to realize that what Al Gore told us about "climate change" is TRUE. It is such a shame that after Al Gore tried for years to warn us & tell us how to avoid all this catastrophe, we are now almost TOO LATE to really change things. I hope you will allow me to present this music video from "An Inconvenient Truth" ----------------- "I NEED TO WAKE UP" -- by Melissa Etheridge.

We all OWE a big Debt of Gratitude to Al Gore, who travelled all around the world, to try to send his message to all of us,
that soon global warming would unleash very dangerous living conditions on planet Earth. What he said was absolutely TRUE, & his opponents were lying, when they tried to discredit his ideas, just to "save money" being spent to stop pollution.

Sure handing out medals or rewards does not solve this problem; we (the US) just continue as usual; kick the can down the road, point fingers, pay off some people, hire some lawyers, call in the army, go to church and pray to the blue sky, etc. Problem solved!!!

My mate likes to say, "been warming up since the ice ages. We wouldn't exist if it were not for global warming and now there are too many of us. A major world war would fix the problem." I do not go along with war. I think a really cheap easy fix is Plant all open spaces with trees, trees, trees. Too easy a fix? For politicians and Chicken Littles, yes!

Can we tell from core drillings if it was ever this warm on Mother Earth before? If the continents were formed by volcanic eruptions, it probably was hot, very hot. Were the seas always where they are? No. I know in southern Illinois there is an area that used to be a sea bed. I believe it is in the Shawnee National Forest or very close to it. Could this be a cyclical thing over which we have no control? Does anyone know how the climate was impacted in the late 1800s when a volcano blew its top in the pacific? Could we be heading in the wrong direction with "clean" air? Does the sun and it's solar flare cycles play a role in the climate. If so, what control could we exercise over that problem?

Trees, trees trees aren't really the answer. While trees do filter out CO2, there are limiting factors to how many will grow. Those limiting factors mainly nutrients in the soil. Over the last hundred years we have pumped CO2 back into the atmosphere that it took nature billions of years to filter out. There are no easy fixes.

But plant life is a good answe. vast algea farms in the ocean show promising results in changing the CO2 issue, but then we are also changing an entire ecosystem to fix our mess and that of course has unforeseen consequences.

As one who has delved into the science behind Climate Change, I have to admit that I felt overwhelmed and inadequate in my understanding, even though by training I was a professional engineer. One of the challenges is that you are not just dealing with climatolgists, but a whole range of disciplines that need to be integrated. Here is just a partial list from the BraveNewPlanet website:

Barry Brook, BraveNewClimate, August 31, 2008: So just who does climate science?

Atmospheric and Physical Sciences: Climatology, Meteorology, Atmospheric dynamics, Atmospheric physics, Atmospheric chemistry, Solar physics, Historical climatology

Earth Sciences: Geophysics, Geochemistry, Geology, Soil Science, Oceanography, Glaciology, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction

Biological Sciences: Ecology, Synthetic biology, Biochemistry, Global change biology, Biogeography, Ecophysiology, Ecological genetics

Mathematics, Statistics and Computational analysis: Applied mathematics, Mathematical modelling, Computer science, Numerical modelling, Bayesian inference, Mathematical statistics, Time series analysis

Generally, people who are working for an organisation which conducts primary research on climate science and publishes this work in peer-reviewed scientific journals should be listened to. There will be diverse opinions among this group – that is the nature of science – but provided their arguments are bound up in evidence and have survived rigorous pre-publication scrutiny and review, then they have to be considered a valid viewpoint (though not the final word – I’ll blog on ‘proof’ at some point).

As Barry Brook summarizes, "our current scientific understanding of global warming and climate change impacts are not the domain of one, quirky field called ‘climate science’. In fact, it doesn’t even exist as a discrete field of science. Indeed the leading peer-reviewed journal Climatic Change is explicitly multidisciplinary in its mandate – after all, that is the nature of the problem."

Also, from the 2013 draft IPCC report as reported by the Guardian:

Carbon emissions must be cut ‘significantly’ by 2020, says UN report

"The UN Environment Program said that even if nations meet their current emissions reduction pledges, carbon emissions in 2020 will be eight to 12 gigatonnes above the level required to avoid a costly nosedive in greenhouse gas output.

"The United Nations Emissions Gap Report 2013, which was compiled by 44 scientific groups in 17 countries, warns that if the greenhouse “gap” isn’t “closed or significantly narrowed” by 2020, the pathway to limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5C will be closed."

I live in admiration and awe of the thousands of scientists worldwide that are working diligently on the problem of Climate Change. I do not second guess their work as I am not qualified to do that. But you will find a whole bunch of Climate Change deniers on Fox News and within the Republican Party...mostly Tea Party types that believe it's all a hoax...and some of them also believe the world is only 6,000 years old. Georgia Congressman Paul Broun, speaking to the John Birch Society in 2010, said that "the entire concept of man-made global warming is a conspiracy perpetuated by certain members of the scientific community to "destroy America.""

He also said, "that the sciences of embryology, evolution, and the Big Bang are "lies straight from the Pit of Hell ... lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior.""

Some people prefer to believe Paul Broun and his ilk. I follow the scientists.

You rang, Sir PGR, I believe in Science, but I also believe that God imbued in those scientists the ability to make known for us the wonder of His universe, climate warming?, it's cyclical, besides there aren't that many people complaining about China's pollution/carbon emissions or for that matter most of Europe's emission problem, unless of course you believe that the USA" s emission problem stays in the USA and is not subjected to prevailing wind currents.

Okay, time for my first post... First of all Global Warming is a hypothesis, let us start off with that. A hypothesis has neither been tested or proven to be true. Once it is/can be tested, if it proves true on the first test it is upgraded to a theory. If, after multiple tests by many scientists it still proves true it because scientific fact. Truth be told Global warming cannot be tested or proven so it remains a hypothesis. Keep that in mind.

Secondly, Al Gore (I'm trying to be nice) has made many claims and some scientists (and I use the term loosely) have backed him up, but they ignore 'inconvenient truths' of their own. Lets look at a few of these. Global Warming claims that the Carbon Dioxide released by cars is increasing the temperature of the Earth, around the polar ice caps. Inconvenient Truth 1 - Carbon Dioxide is released by all animals and especially VOLCANOES. A single MINOR volcanic eruption releases almost as much Carbon Dioxide as all the cars running on earth for a solid year... Inconvenient Truth 2 - If, as is claimed, the polar ice caps are heating up and the tropical regions are staying pretty much the same, that would mean LESS SEVERE weather. Meteorology 101... Severe storms (i.e Hurricanes and Tornadoes) are caused by major changes in temperature, such as a hot front (from the tropical regions) and a cold front (from the polar regions) meeting. The farther apart the temperatures, the more severe the weather. The closer the temperatures, the less sever.

Do some research of your own. Don't forget to look outside the atmosphere for causes of climate change. Our friend the sun does more than just make it warmer. Look into Solar Winds vs Cosmic rays and how they affect clouds...

You are new to this website and we have of course had numerous debates about the science of Climate Change. I personally have read books and technical articles on many facets of Climate Change and the more I delve into it the more I realize I'm in over my head. I have shared my opinions in the post above but I'll rehash a few points. Here's an interesting blog post that expands on my views:

So just who does climate science?

The author lists some 30 scientific fields of study that are a part of an integrated overall understanding of Climate Change. The scientists build massive computer models to incorporate their findings, and they publish papers that are heavily peer reviewed by other scientists worldwide. The IPCC is a massive undertaking of scientific knowledge with contributions from scientists in every major developed country.

This isn't rocket science...it's a hundred times more complex than rocket science.

So when people start sharing their expertise and opinions in the field, I ask them what their qualifications are. I have an engineering/scientific background, and have done more reading about the subject than perhaps 99 percent of Americans, yet I do not consider myself qualified to render an expert opinion. However, I do have a strong bias towards scientists, and when they overwhelmingly support the view that climate change is largely caused by humans, then I am inclined to believe them.

I thought Climate Change was due to all the cows grazing and passing all that gas............destroying the atmosphere. Just humor, although it may add some small percentage to the problem. Climate Change is huge and so difficult to pinpoint a major cause. However, mankind does present many sources of contamination due to a massive industrial complex, tossing a variety of toxic materials in wastelands, and all those trees that we cut down for building material. It is not hard to believe that mankind may be the major cause of this impending disaster to life as we know it. The question to be answered, can mankind turn it around without many deaths contributed to Climate Change? I've always admired the lifestyle of the Native American (Indians, if you prefer). Native Americans seemed to be good caretakers of the land, but would they have continued to be caretakers while gaining knowledge of technology and affluence of a money system? That is a hard question, but Native Americans did manage the land better than the immigration of most of America from other countries.

Hats off to all the scientists trying to make discovery in Climate Change. They have a tremendous problem to help save our world from all appearance looks like we are killing the planet. If you on one in belief that Earth is too big to fail, you are probably the same people that said Banks were too big to fail. Earth as a large eco-system will try to recover, just like a diseased liver can resurrect itself from damage. However, the liver as well as the Earth will reach a point of no return and will spiral down to death. I hope Earth has not reached the point of no return. I'm optimistic, but each year the weather appears strange and showing signs of increasing power and destruction. I'm concerned for what may happen to the Earth has already happened to Mars. We may find signs of a past society that died on Mars.

Has anybody seen the pictures of the air around the big cities in China where they have massive industrialization? Those people are having to wear masks from the toxic air. Guess what? That air crosses the pond into America. Please have concern for all the melting ice at the polar caps. It is a sign that something worst is about to happen. It's not just the rising ocean water. It is all about the cooler ocean currents causing tragic weather events on land. Ozone protects mankind from the hazards emitting from the sun. More skin cancers and fast moving particles can zip through the human body and not show damage until you notice something not working well in the body. It must be a grand plan to eliminate civilizations when they do not take care of their environment. The natural forces rebel.

I won't deny Climate Change is complex and involves many sciences. I won't even claim to be an expert at any of them, but what I will say is when you look at basic facts about what is being claimed in regards to the cause, and those basic facts contradict Global Warming (not the same thing as Climate Change) then its hard to say that as you get into the more advanced stuff it would change.

Fact is that the Earth's climate is changing, but if you look at history it does so 'often'. There are cycles where it warms up, reaches a peak, then cools off. This has been going on since the Earth started (either 6000 or several billion years, depending on your POV)

Fact is that the basis of Global Warming isn't even Mars, its Venus. Scientists saw that Venus has a much higher Carbon Dioxide percentage than Earth and that its uninhabitable and some people (mostly non-scientists) said, "Hey, we're releasing massive amounts of Carbon Dioxide due to pollution, one day the earth will be like Venus if we don't stop." What they didn't take into account was A) the other heavy gasses that Venus has more of, B) Venus is closer to the Sun thus the Solar winds affect it more meaning less cloud formation leading to higher temps, and C) Yes, Cows pass gas releasing Carbon Dioxide, which is also released by humans, all animals, and volcanoes...
