The failure of the mainstream press and media to keep politicians honest, to do their job as investigative journalists, to keep the public informed, and to act independently from government and church, has become highly problematic, to say the least.

It seems we’re headed back to “The Three Estates of the Realm” recognized in the Middle Ages in Christian Europe – and those three estates were clergy, aristocracy, and commoners.

That was the medieval social ranking, and in that system the idea was imposed and accepted that God ordained the clergy, which in turn ordained the aristocracy, royalty and nobility, which deservedly decided on the ranking and privileges of the more “worthy” commoners (which were later called bourgeoisie), and of the lower classes, servants, peasants, etc.

The "Fourth Estate" emerged in the late 1700s and referred to forces outside the clerical and monarchical power structure, and it gradually became commonly referred to as the independent press or media. The problem is, the Fourth Estate is dying, not only from bowing to the intimidation of government, but from its unwillingness to stand up for freedom of the press, or to properly keep politicians honest and inform the public.

However, the rapidly declining independence of the press and media is but one of many indicators that humanity is moving backward, and has been moving backward since the Thatcher and Reagan era. The entitlement of a privileged wealthiest few, the declining status of the middle class and workers, the declining willingness of government to promote the general welfare and help the elderly, the disadvantaged and the disabled, and particularly the denial that government should promote the general welfare, are some of the other indicators.

But here's the thing: Partisan politicians are not going to turn us around and enable us to progress forward to a better world. It is going to take a reformation of both religion and government to liberate and empower us, and put an end to the battle for the throne so we all may share the power and the wealth fairly, justly, and equitably.

To see suggestions about how we can do that, and why we should, see this.
