As of today people can begin price shopping and signing up for government health insurance. Also, the government shut down due to disagreement over that exact issue.

The GOP is even becoming split over this. The extremists who will do anything to stop Obamacare such as Ted Cruz, and the rational people who will not sacrifice good policy making or jeapordize the economy just to make a scene. This shutdown is bound to hinder the recovering economy.

Another interesting side note. Many of the sites that I visit are frequented by people around the world. A vast majority of them are baffled at the GOP reasoned. They are confused on why the GOP would put the profits of health insurance companies over the well-being of its citizens. America is one of the few remaining 1st world countries not to have universal healthcare.

I know I briefly hit on a lot of complex points, but what effect will this have on the economy and how will this shut down end?

It's law now, "The Affordable Care Act or "Obama" Care if you choose, or "not". Now the healing begins with making the Care Act work. America just made it's biggest step forward and history repeats just like what happened after Medicare was approved. The difference between Medicare and Obama Care is that it reaches far more citizens and people. Is it fair? That will be debated and will tested with improvements to a system. Americans that didn't have any health care, which before Obama Care took over, what's changed? America still paid for their catastrophic health issues. Now we are spreading the funding of those without health care more equitable and those 1%'ers, CEO's and small business owners, it's time to pay up and be responsive to the many employees you've denied health care. That's is what I call fair. Yes, their will be pain for many wondering how they will pay their share. Decisions will be made to pay through a health exchange or pay a penalty. That will not be taken lightly by many. Education is the best solution, because our new health care system will be learning process for many months.

What I feel is unfair is a treasonous Republican bunch that holds America hostage to their support to the big business cronies. I have to admire the rich businesses of Buffet and Gates that support the enrichment of America. The overwhelming rich 1%'ers don't get it and try ever so hard to keep America in a serfdom dominating over the poor and underserved citizens of America. That's unfair. We need more socialism added to our democratic way of life. The rich in this country refuse to help the poor, sick and children of this country. Even now, children and poor food programs are threatened with funding removal. America is going backwards. Obama Care a landmark program is a start.

America, you haven't seen anything, yet. We are moving ahead and mark this day October 1, 2013 as a "New Day" with more to come. I now will research who the Congressional Politicians are that are voting against our progress through the Library of Congress data forums. In 2016, I will most likely vote against every single Republican I can for holding America hostage, shutting down the government. I continue to believe most all Republicans should be held liable for treasonous acts against the people of America. I'm not damning them, yet. However, I still find Republicans looking more and more like Evil Flying Monkeys managed by the likes of media moguls Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity.

I really cannot believe that this has happened! The government has shutdown because they failed to win an election and just can't accept the fact that Obamacare is the law! Get over it already! I am a federal worker and have been furloughed as a result of this. Even so, I do not want to see the Senate or the President to retreat. The piece meal approach is just another tactic to have future negotiations to defund Obamacare in some fashion or another. I still can't believe that a Junior Republican is running the the show. I thought Boehner was in charge of the Republicans. What is that all about? I have never seen Boehner look so confused and defeated. Where did Ted Cruz come from and how did he start running things. This is a sad day for America. Can't wait until elections!

Neither can I , I await the next round of elections so we can remove all of these egocentric so-called public servants, both democrats and republicans, I think Harry Reid should crawl somewhere and find a hole and stay there , same as with Bohner , neither of them has the nation's interest at heart, it's all about ego, and don't run that it's the law crap, that's a argument one has when there is nothing else to say,. The it's a law argument would hold water if they remove all of the special waivers and exemptions for the politicial connected, and they had 3 three years to prepare for this day and still the system crashed, what happened to all those millions of dollars spent to ensure a smooth transition, no this entire idea was filled with good intentions and as usual the politicians screwed it up. I can hardly wait for the next round of elections, we have one here next month.

Johnnycee -- You're drinking too much of the Fox News Kool-Aid. I watched Fox News coverage for a while, and then I read your posts and you are echoing everything Fox says.

Perhaps you should watch MSNBC for a while and listen to some of the compelling stories of people with preexisting conditions get affordable healthcare for the first time. Elation and jubilation. My heart goes out to them. The estimates are that 30 million Americans without healthcare insurance will sign up eventually, although Fox News is doing their best to discourage them.

So many are signing up that the system got overwhelmed.

The Affordable Care Act fixes many unfair things...women will no longer have to pay more just because they are women...people with preexisting conditions such as cancer can sign up and get coverage...no questions asked. Insurance companies can no longer drop you and there are no lifetime maximums on payouts.

And the burden on the emergency rooms will lessen as the number of uninsured declines.

Seems pretty fair to me...but Fox News ignores all those points.

Affordable healthcare is a grave need in the US. The current set up has made decent healthcare price completely unreasonable. Hospitals Execs, Pharm Companies and insurance have come together to make prices skyrocket. For example: A bag of saline solution costs a hospital 44 cents to 1 dollar to produce but a patient is charged 350-400 dollars for one. Or a medical gown is listed as 150-200 dollars when you can get the EXACT same gown for less than 2 dollars online.

Heart surgery can cost over 100,000 dollars in the US but in Canada and in a majority of Europe, the exact same quality of care costs 1/4 that amount. The US is being price gouged out of medical care. And this bill addresses that

Everything you say is true, and there are two major, overriding reasons. 1) Greed of the hospitals and entire healthcare industry, and 2) the blood sucking lawyers.

We need tort reform, but the lawyers and their lobbies probably own too many of our politicians.

America is going down the drain and all our politicians care about is themselves. Vote out as many as possible.

I haven't had the chance to watch Fox News but obviously you did considering that you knew what their news people were saying, I have read the various newspapers, both in print and on-line, they were not affiliated with fox News, also on the local ABC News affiliate , they all were saying pretty much what I posted, and that was that the politicians have forgotten the job was to find and install a Affordable Care Act, this not it, they all agree that the granting of waivers and exemptions does not help their cause in saying that the Act is fair , you have no answer as to why they spent millions of dollars and three years designing a system that could handle the enrollment and it failed within a hour, they knew the kind of volume that would occur when the system went on-line, and I bet that they knew it would crash, but it was more important to give the perception that every thing was going along according to plan, regardless of the 30 million signing up, the problem is those who aren't signing up and would rather pay the $95.00 fine, these are the people who are needed to sign up to help off set the costs of the plan. The then Senate Majority Leader Nancy Pelosia was correct when she said "We needed to pass it, to learn what's in it", well a lot of people are reading it and they are not happy campers, and the Democratic Senate knows it and wants to get this issue behind them before the Debt talks begin, as I said before this is more about ego's and gamesmanship and very little about governing. Is that what Fox News said, if so then the NSA has my TV bugged and they are leaking my thoughts to the Fox News people.
