The Pentagon released a statement saying that troops will NOT be paid during the shutdown. They, like law enforcement and other emergency services will be required to work with out pay. The GOP is holding these paychecks hostage over the Affordable Care Act. This is both morally and ethically wrong. The Affordable Care Act was passed through a vote and has survived dozens of attempts by the GOP to repeal, I think the count is nearing 50.

The polls show that 59% of the people favor the Affordable Care Act. A large portion of those people think the bill should do even more, and hardly anyone is in favor of a government shutdown. GOP needs to learn that you have to compromise at least some of the time, you don't always get your way. Even Republicans like Boehner think that GOP is being unreasonable but has to go along with it because of hte backlash. This is just ridiculous.

Guess we will see how far this goes. 18 hours and counting.

It is a good thing they do not get paid!!! The military does not produce anything!!! they only cost us money and we do not get anything back fot it except war toys. Suggestion: Stop the F35 and fast Navy ship programs and pay these people from those savings!!!
Or hold a huge auction for all the junk stored in the desert!!

Zach you say that troops, emergency services, and law enforcement will be ..."required to work without pay."...

That's not entirely correct, they WILL be paid, but they may be paid late, maybe a day late, maybe a few days, no one knows.

I agree that it is not right to make them work with DELAYED pay, but it is also not right to say they will be required to work WITHOUT pay. Delayed pay is not the same thing as no pay.

And we are hearing the same gloom and doom about this looming government shutdown as if the country will come to a screeching halt, kind of like the same thing people said about the sequester a few months ago. What happened then? Airplanes suffered some delays for a couple of days then the problem got fixed. The problems will be fixed this time, too. Sure some people will be hurt, but 99% of us will be just fine.

I am mostly on your side on this issue, and hope that the government does not get shut down, but the talking heads that are predicting the apocalypse for the country are just making things worse by their fear mongering. Then again, that's what they do.

The government workers that will be most affected by this shut-down are the so-called non-essentials, if they are so non-essential why are they working anyway ? besides any monies lost during this money crisis will be restored to the government workers when this issue gets resolved, unlike their civilian counter-parts, who will lose money period.

johnny have you heard about the big parties being planned in Washington D.C.? If the shutdown happens lots of federal employees will be off work for a day, or a few days, and big parties are planned for the people who are getting the free "vacation" days.

They get a few days off, hit some parties or just lay around the house, have a good time, rest up, then get paid a day, or a few days late, and they still get paid for all the days they did not work...

    What's not to like?

True or not, I don't know, but on the radio it was mentioned that big parties are being planned for those overpaid, non essential employees.

This is why I no longer rely on the main stream media to report what's really factual, they want to continue hitting the emotional button by saying things like starving babies, poor people not getting treated and they will likely end up dying because of a lack of medical care, it's bullshit, how about trying to figure out why the Senate hasn't passed a budget in four years while the Republican leadership, for lack of a better word, quietly goes along and with the Democrats come up with the absurd Continual Resolution Plan instead of a budget. If you need emotional news watch 20/20,or 60 Minutes, or Dateline, maybe even 48 Hours, those are shows that are designed to evoke an emotional response, not the main Stream media, their job is to report the news as it happens and save the comments and editorializing for another venue.

I like to repeat what I said before: Start cutting our wars, military carbage; reign in Pentagon spending; stop the F35 and Navy programs, that will help.
Our biggest waste is the war machine; when are people going to understand that??????? When is the Government going to spent on infrastructure instead useless wartoys??? Therefore I repeat our biggest waste is the military!!!

I agree Dutch, but not paying or postponing the pay of service men is unacceptable. You can't punish them for out of control government spending. We cannot skimp on their pay or their benefits afterwards.

Yes; question why are there so many "service men" who want to get paid? Because of our wars and meddling in the rest of the world; so this is a self inflicted wound. Then instead of joining the military they would have looked for civil jobs instead. Also our culture via video games movies etc. promotes the "love for killing" and "playing Rambo" instead of becoming engineers to construct infrastructure instead of "destruction qualities" only.
