The Senate has confirmed the nations first openly gay judge to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. This in and of itself is a huge step forward, but the fact that he was confirmed by a vote of 98-0 is even more striking. President Obama's nomination of Todd Hughes would have been unthinkable only a few years ago and shows that we are finally starting to understand that a persons sexual orientation has nothing to do with their ability to perform a certain job. My hope is that this is the first of many positions of power that gay citizens in our country will have the chance to achieve.

We still have quite a long way to go towards equality in this country, but this story definitely gave me some hope. What does everyone think of today's vote? Is anyone surprised that there were zero no votes from the Republicans, especially after the huge fight they put up over DOMA and Prop 8 last year?
