I liked your post, as it says what we ALL feel about this episode in US history. You might remember Michael Moore's great movie/documentary about US Health Care, very appropriately named: "Sicko."

In ALL the debates going on about Obamacare, the Democrats have been forgetting to mention some very important points:
    (a) that "Canada" has FREE healthcare
    (b) that "England" has FREE healthcare
    (c) that "France" has FREE healthcare --- and MANY MORE.

Out of all the civilized free nations in the world, the USA is the SLOWEST about giving ALL our citizens FREE healthcare,
partially due to the greedy pharmaceutical companies, & secondary or tertiary providers of supplies.

People can get wiped out by one single incident of illness or disease. And nursing homes can cost over $8,000 per month,
(for the least expensive rooms) even if you already have 2 insurance policies.

The Fact is: WE CAN'T AFFORD to GET SICK, right now in America. It's cheaper to buy an airplane ticket to France, (& learn
French, enroute), so you can blend in & pretend to be a French citizen. (Voila')

Of course, some people (who can't leave the USA) are using Super Tan, & wearing a sombrero to the doctor's office, so they
can't (legally) be "turned away" from medical care. (ha) -- It's true, doctors cannot turn down any illegal aliens for care.

They had to pass Obamacare to find out what's in it!!!! LOL Words directly from Pelosi herself! I've yet to meet anyone that can explain Obamacare? As far as Canada & Europe go, I watched Sicko (Michael Moore documentary) several years ago and from what I remember their Universal healthcare systems were dismal at best and the doctors did not live lavish lifestyles actually quite the opposite,

    To the OP: Moronic post.

Ask not what I can do for my country, but rather ask what my country can do for me.

Here is my take, based on my own experience and others close to me regarding the effects of Obamacare.
It would appear that the people who make above the poverty line are the ones who are going to be screwed in this. I have a neighbor who is a WAITRESS for a company that, previously, payed 2/3 the cost of her healthcare. No longer...
I have another neighbor who is retired and part of her retirement was health insurance. No longer.... (fixed income)
I have yet another neighbor whose hours were cut to 30/week to eliminate them from the benefits pool.
I have a son-in-law whose insurance will be downgraded and will have to pay more for his share, effective Jan 1, 2014.
For me and my wife? So far what I can find for decent insurance for the both of us, will cost us an additional $300, minimum, a month.
Whatever you had before, which may have been high, will be higher.
Quite possible whatever insurance you had before as a benefit, will be gone.
The only people who will do well (perhaps) are those who do not work...many of whom choose not to work. (yes, I went there...I managed a section 8 property and maybe 5% of the residents there made any attempt to better their situation...the rest were content to live off the labor of others).
My wife and I make an astounding $64000 a year, combined. (sarcasm alert). We cannot afford to pay an additional $300/month for insurance.

    Thanks Obama...

Nothing is free...if you sincerely believe that, then I have some ocean front property in Kansas to sell to you at bargain prices.
In exchange for "free health insurance" the govt would, obviously, have to increase taxes to cover the costs.
Given that our federal govt is good at 3 things: blowing stuff up, waste, red tape, we will wind up paying twice as much in taxes as we will garner in benefits.

I have a novel idea: Instead of living off the govt dole, instead of expecting freebies from the govt, why not actually work to improve your life, living and situation? Sorry if I just insulted you, I just believe you should get out of life what you put into it. Sure, we should take care of our young, our elderly, and those who are incapable of taking care of themselves. Otherwise, you should be working to take care of yourself, your family and your future.

Sitting on your ass and expecting freebies will bankrupt our nation....we are just a hop, skip and a jump from there now.

Yes I agree; nothing in this world comes for free. (anymore). Personally, I think the whole Obama care thing was approached/created the wrong way.
As always with politics etc. they create something new, instead of looking at the existing programs first and take the bugs out. Mostly the wrong things still carry over to the new thing. The corruption in health care is huge; writing prescriptions which you do not need, writing bills with double pens, doubling the co-pays etc. This makes just about anyone scared to visit the doctor, who in most cases lives a rich life. In my opinion they should have made improvements step by step, not like they did.

Dutch, you and I both know that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, same as with this Affordable Care Act fiasco. The Health Care Industry was rift with corruption and was in need of reforms, although there are several things in this new Law that I agree with, there are several more that I just don't like, the manner it was shoved thru Congress was more about Democratic hubris than the considerations of the citizens, the method that was used to explain the financial aspects of the new law turned out to be a lie, a lie already known to the party leaders, hence the quote" We have to pass it before we can read it", the concessions granted to certain party members and supporters for their vote for the passage of the Bill, even now, there are exemptions still being made for certain party supporters, forgotten in all of this was the real purpose of the Act, which was to make health affordable to all. Damn politicians!!!

    1) Canada, England and France do NOT have free healthcare, they pay a hefty tax every year that "contributes" to the country's premiums. Canada comes to the US for healthcare when they are placed on waiting lists in their own country. The health status of England's population falls far below the US. US healthcare far exceeds technology and delivery of appropriate care compared to ANY country. This information is indisputable and can be researched by anyone. Obamacare is not Universal Healthcare by the way.

    2) "ObamaCare Facts" websites are puppet websites, much like the main stream media, that will give you mis-leading information, if not incorrect information. If you want the truth, well, you'll just have to wait until January to see "what's in it". Oh, and when your taxes go up. When the system collapses under itself, you might see even more facts. Watch C-SPAN and listen to testimony, this is where your truths are discovered. Those too lazy to research for themselves, well, you get what you deserve.

    3) Why is paying for healthcare such an issue in this country? iPhones are more common than a pantry full of nutritious foods. Why? people want style and no substance in this country. Pay for a doctor's visit? No way! I can't afford that, my cell phone bill is too high! Pay for a prescription? I refuse, the new iPhone just came out and I have to have it. This is a pathetic society that wants exactly what the previous poster said; Ask not what I can do for my country but what my country can do for me. Why, oh why, is it so foreign to American's to take good care of themselves and PAY to care for their body? Yet think its normal to pay for an iPad and iPhone, spend more than they make and drive ridiculously overpriced cars, houses, etc.

    4) Obamacare is NOT universal healthcare. Let me repeat, OBAMACARE IS NOT UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE and the people that keep thinking this are what we call "LOW INFORMATION VOTERS". This is mandatory health insurance purchase. Period. Why is that so hard for people to understand? Perhaps you get your news from the main stream media puppets that want you to think that. The problem with Obamacare is that we don't have enough RN's, Respiratory Therapists, Doctors, etc to care for the incoming population. The reimbursements are also being lowered and critical access hospitals (those in the poorest communities) will close by 2015 under the weight of this bill.

    5) READ CAREFULLY: I was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in April. My insurance is being cancelled as of December 31, 2013. Universal healthcare and increased access to care MY A$$.

    6) ps: The Republicans are the only ones demanding that congress adopt this coverage themselves (the Democrats excluded themselves, wow, if it's so great, why aren't THEY on it?) The Republicans drafted a much fairer bill that would NOT tax it's citizens, did you get spoon fed THAT little diddy on MSNBC? Make it partisan all you want, this isn't about Republicans and Democrats; it's about a bunch of cronies that got together and rammed a very damaging bill down your throats. But I'm patient, I'll allow you to refer to this post 2 years from now when you sit in the ER for 13 hours with your arm hanging off because there's only one physician on staff...........and no nurses. Stop with the vitriol about the Republicans did this, the Democrats did that. No one cares. Obamacare is wrong all the way around and if you can't read what's in it for yourself, well, like I said; you get what you deserve.

I have researched this and your points are wildly inaccurate and outright falsehoods. Number one--England ranks number one in the entire world of life expectancy. Where does America rank, you might ask? Number 33.

We may have the best healthcare system in the world for the richest people in the world, but that is no way to run a healthcare system for a country with 300 million plus citizens.

I don't think that ranking of our Health Care System (33) conveys the true nature of like expectancy, you must throw out our outrageous murder rate, drunk driver deaths, and drug related deaths including suicides to arrive at a true heath expectancy picture, I don't think it will rise to the top 5 or 6, but it will definitely be lower than 33rd.plus you must factor in the for profit margins of Health Care where the least do not get the best treatment.

NCriv says that ..."Canada, England, and France do NOT have free healthcare"... And of course that is correct, we all know that it is paid for with taxes, LOTS and LOTS of taxes. OK some people don't know that, maybe they think that magic fairy dust pays for all of it. I know better, I lived in one of those "free" countries. Have you seen a pay stub from someone there? There's an unbelievable amount of their pay taken out for that "FREE" healthcare.

And there are lots of examples of how their free healthcare system doesn't work very well at all, and I know it is true, I have seen it firsthand. Lots of examples of how wonderful it is, as well. Remember that Canada, England, and France do NOT have ObamaCare, which is far different from what they have.

ObamaCare will probably be like that "FREE" (not really) healthcare in this way: There will be many stories of how great it is, or how terrible it is, depending on whether you support it or hate it. But that goes for most big government programs. Another way: many people over there do not like their "free" healthcare either.

Single payer! Do it all the way, the RIGHT way, or don't do it.

    HealthCare Calculator

I suggest that bbracken and others use the above calculator to do a check of what their personal costs would be under the Affordable Care Act.

For example I loaded in a Dallas zip code, assumed a family of two with an family income of $64,000 (as per bbracken) and the calculator says his cost will be $5114 per year for Silver coverage. That's about $426 per month. The Bronze coverage calculates out at $3,498 or $291 per month.

Bbracken says his costs are going up $300 per month because of ObamaCare. I seriously doubt that unless he has no coverage now.

I think again the focus is too much on the 'premium" instead of what do you get for it. As I said in some other thread, it is the huge corruption in this industry which should be tackled. Especially here in FL doctors cost and treatment is a huge mess. For instance we did change doctors already 4 times this year. For instance one doctor had only a prescription booklet and prescribed all kind of pills we absolutely did not need. Another doctor did not do anything himself but made sure you got all kinds of unneccessarry tests all over the place; the third one stopped using United Healthcare etc.
In Miami there are certain "gangs" who specialize in defrauding the system. Also down here, I've seldom met a doctor who was a real American; most are "imported" with names like Hussain, Lopez etc. Sorry in this State it is a huge mess, and gets only bigger with the new thing with even more loopholes.
