One gunman is dead and two others are feared to be on the loose after opening fire at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. early this morning. The shooter that has been killed engaged with police in a shootout though the Navy Yard before eventually being fatally wounded. Police have reported no further shots fired, but believe that there may be two more individuals involved with the shooting.

The Navy Yard is the oldest United States Navy installation, dating all the way back to the 18th Century. President Obama has been briefed on the tragedy and lamented the fact that we were dealing with yet another mass shooting on our soil. He also called all of the victims "patriots" that were just trying to go to work and do their duties.

I heard much details on the news last night. Crazy people with guns....... I blame our mindset that you must find a cheaper way to do things. That's why this guy who shot out someone's tires, shot his gun through the ceiling of his appt., had 8 disciplinary incidents while in the Navy, etc., passed a security check. CNN said they found this all out with what's on the internet yet a professional company who specializes in this area.... can't find this info. Doing everything cheaper has given us a fast food quality level.

Plus the guy was slipping into craziness. He had reported that he was being followed by three men. (paranoia) He also reported he's been hearing voices in his head. This caused him to switch hotels but the voices didn't leave. He reported this info to a Navy facility in Rhode Island.

There are a whole lot of unanswered questions on this issue. I agree that they got their security checks done by a "contractor" who may or may not have been as meticulous as we would expect. They certainly dropped the ball when it came to looking for any deviant behavior. But it might just be that getting it done "on the cheap" meant "rushing it through". Also, there are "good old boy" issues, that they do favors for those who worked in that business for a significant time. Then, since the shooter was black, they may have been afraid to refuse him, as some may think it was done on a purely "racist" motive. And I hate to mention, but sometimes a little "payola" can get you special privileges, like badges & ID, etc.
