The Bible predicts a big huge FINAL WAR, that will be the End of all Life on Earth, & the End of the WORLD. (Book of Revelations).
The Bible also NAMES the Place of this final conflict. It is "ARMAGEDDON" --- which translates to the "Plains of Megiddo" -- located in the region of Palestine and Israel. Those 2 adjoining nations have serious problems: FYI (Palestine is Muslim, & Israel is Jewish).
BUT Did you KNOW that this region is ALSO connected (directly) to SYRIA?

If we go along with prevailing winds in Washington, & launch Naval projectiles (shells) into SYRIA, it may just ERUPT all the forces of Armageddon.
Just because of a few deaths in Syria, (sad as it may be) do YOU REALLY want to set off the END OF THE WORLD? THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE TOTAL HYPOCRISY of the GOP, who claim to be "so very Christian." They don't even KNOW that they are Tempting Fate by doing any more combat in that region. If you study your Geography of the region, ISRAEL is on the border of SYRIA, at its SW corner. (Palestine is only a tiny part of Israel, on its East side). Hmmm IF YOU KNEW that ARMAGEDDON (the End of the World) is in that region of Israel and Palestine -- then WHY WOULD YOU INSIST on Messing AROUND in that AREA? -- In case I did not make myself CLEAR on this issue, SYRIA borders onto Israel, (& Palestine is only a small piece of land enclosed by Israel). ISRAEL & SYRIA share a 47 miles COMMON BORDER. So the LAST PLACE on EARTH that you should be starting a WAR, is anywhere NEAR "SYRIA" !!! (Get out your MAPS, and check it out!)

If you have read this and (hopefully) understood it, I hope you will write or call your Congressman, to tell them we are on the verge of ARMAGEDDON, due to this sarin gas attack in Syria. Our RESPONSE to that is critical. Have them call or write Obama, to WARN him of the real Danger here. We MUST make them see that PEACE is the only true answer in that part of the world. In the USA, we are an 80% majority of Christians, & we have been warned. But in order to save the planet, we MUST make sure that our Govt knows how WE FEEL. I certainly don't want to see the End of the World YET. --- Do you?

I guess we are not there yet!! regardless of what you say the human race will find ways to survive. A Middle East war asyou describe does not affect the tribes in New Guinea, of Eskimo's, so I'm more optimistic than you. Do not forget that that area has been plagued with wars since the beginning of time, so nothing new. Whatever the bible says is also in those days guess work; I'm convinced that our generation will not see Armageddon.

Right now there are way too many deterrents to go only so far ,but certainly not to a full nuclear scale etc. So I think this whole thing with Syria will get eventually resolved, however the US with their present attitude will have created even more enemy's than ever before, that will be the result.
If in the future someone has the guts to attack Israel, and the US makes a wrong move than indeed there will be hell to pay and many more parties will participate.

The writings of ancient people should not ever be a factor of when or where a conflict begins. That is just ridiculous. Every time some conflict starts there are always a few people that claim it's the 'end of the world' prophecies coming true. The one thing they all have in common, they have all been wrong.

This is no different. Armageddon is not beginning. Hell, if Armageddon, as described in the Bible is an actually prophecy, then there is nothing we can do or not do to prevent it. We cannot delay nor can we make it happen sooner. The decision to invade Syria or not should be based on facts and not mythology.

While I'm no where near convinced that invading Syria is a good idea, this kind of thinking and reasoning is ridiculous and no good can come from it.

I believe Israel and us will start the last war, and yes, nukes being dropped in the East will affect the "entire" world's population, even the Eskimos.

If the President attacks Syria, the end result will be World War 3. It is almost a given. Don't believe that is a certainty? Are you willing to risk your very lives on that bet?

We have got to stop this "My Team" Ra - Ra crap. We are All AMERICANS (for the moment) and we have to start thinking about what both parties are doing to us and our future. It's time to put a stop to it.

The excuses for going forward are outright rubbish. Anybody with a computer knows it is. Even if Assad himself pushed the button, any reaction should come from the UN not from the self appointed "Worlds Policemen".

This is one of the main reasons for the UN... If IT can't act, then it's not our responsibility and we should reconsider being a part of that organization.

Would any of you support this action from a republican President? Impeachment would be the order of the day... And maybe it should with this one as well, it's too late for the last one.

Might I suggest a quick call to your federal congress critters. These events will AFFECT EACH OF YOUR LIVES for the rest of your lives!

If everyone and I mean EVERYONE got all of their friends of either or all political affiliations to call their congress critter and let them know in no uncertain terms that if this goes forward... and THEY support this, IMPEACHMENT would follow post haste, both HIS and Theirs!.

That may be our only hope... For real. <Snap out of it people>

    Good Luck!

Hello Zach: I know you are an atheist, but that does not allow you to call all Christians (or others) who read & believe the BIBLE as being some kind of idiots, or that the Bible's prophecies are "nonsense." At least 80% of all Americans consider themselves to be Christians. Are we ALL crackpots?
I was skeptical at one point in my life, (part of the maturing process), & wondered if the Bible could possibly be true, or maybe it was all a bunch of old guys smoking weed & writing fairy tales to amuse themselves. But the Bible says "Knock & the door shall be opened unto you, Seek and ye shall find." So I set out to discover the Truth. Amazingly it was in my Science classes that I found the proof of the truth in the Bible. The story in Bible of the Creation is exactly the sequence of "evolution" in Darwin's theory. (coincidence?) The people living in B.C. (before Christ) did not have means to travel the earth to search out different specimens of extinct animals, or have a microscope to study internal organs or even micro-organisms like germs & bacteria. But they somehow figured out that the first creatures came from the sea, & that TIME played an important part in the developmt of creatures (separated into "days" in the Bible, but each segment could have been several thousand years). The BIBLE even says that "one day is as a thousand years in God's sight." The Bible says that God punished the serpent (snake) for talking Eve into eating the apple. So God made the snake have to crawl on his belly forever more. That means that the snake did NOT USED TO have to do that, but he once had legs. Well, in biology we found out that snakes have hip sockets, which means they DID used to have legs, & somewhere they lost that appendage a long time ago. How did the "illiterate" writers of the Bible KNOW that? Somebody said today that IF there is a prediction of World's End, then nothing we can do will be able to stop it. BUT in the Bible, it tells of an instance where God was going to destroy a village, because the people there were corrupt and evil. But one nearby resident said to God, "But Lord, what if there were 10 decent men living in that village? Would you still destroy it?" And God thought for a minute & said, "Well, maybe if there are 10 good men living there, I could perhaps save the village." Then the questioner asked, "Well, what if there were EIGHT decent men living there?" And God thought & said, "Well, maybe I could save the village for those 8 men." And so on, THE GOOD thing about this, is to illustrate that you could have a DIALOG with GOD and even CHANGE HIS MIND about something. In this case you could even negotiate with God, what was a Fair Judgment. SO, if this was closing in on the TRUE END TIMES, & we are actually accumulating all the "signs" of the End Times right now, ---- maybe we can ask God if he could save the world if there are even 10 million Good Men left on this Earth. Would it then be worthy of saving it? We could find out the Answer soon enough. All the SIGNS are coming true. Earthquakes everywhere, total pollution in the ocean killing 1/3 of all living creatures in the sea, "signs in the heavens" like asteroids & meteorites, Wars all over the place, & plagues that are increasing all over the world -- THESE ARE THE SIGNS OF THE END TIMES IN THE BIBLE (written thousands of years ago). The Bible describes a sea of blood, liken to a dead man's blood. (Chernobyl means "sea of blood") And Chernobyl was the site of the world's biggest Nuclear Plant Catastrophe in the Soviet Union several years ago. Now our ocean is being polluted by Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Plant, radioactivity out of control, & it is now escaping into the ocean, unstoppable, & will make the fish radioactive, so if we EAT them, we will die. But scientists said there is no way known to stop this spread of radioactivity into the Pacific Ocean, dispersing everywhere. THIS alone could be the END OF MANKIND. We must have water to drink, and fish (or something) to eat. We have destroyed most of the water & even the air on this planet with pollution, & soon it will kill all the little animals & plants that we must eat to survive. HERE IS THE END. The Bible predicted this would happen. So anyone who does not believe in the Bible is certainly free to ignore it. But ignoring it, will not stop it. AND as of yet, we have NOT found any other planet suitable for us to migrate to. The Moon is impossible, (no air) & so is MARS, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, & Pluto. And it is physically impossible for us to reach any planets beyond our solar system, since it takes so long to get there, we'd all be dead long before arrival.

    Eternal:

I didn't call Christians nor any other group idiots. And while, yes, nearly 3/4 of the US is Christian, truth isn't dictated by popular belief. Nor did I call everyone crackpots. A person can be sane and intelligent while still holding on to some nonsensical beliefs such as religion. The beliefs are idiotic, not the people.

You try and cite examples of world events and then attribute them to the Biblical prophecies, the same thing people have been doing for all of recorded history. You can literally pick any point in time and take events from around the world and claim that armageddon is upon us. It is nothing new.

And science has "proved" the Bible at all. I would go point by point of your post, but for the sake of time lets just look at your snake claim. Snakes' ancestors had legs. Over thousands of generations, the legs gradually became smaller and smaller until they eventually disappeared leaving vestigal traces of where the legs once were. All animals have vestigal remnants from their predecessors. Humans for example, tailbone, wisdom teeth, vomeronasal organ, and appendix just to name a few. When an species is hindered by a specific organ, they are less likely to survive to pass on their genes. Legs seem to be hindering certain species of lizard. Perhaps it made it harder to borrow or swim. That hinderance made lizards with large legs more vulnerable to predators. Smaller legs meant more likely to survive and thus legs were eventually bred out.

Now let's look at the Bible claim: A talking, very intelligent, serpent convinced a naked human to eat an apple and thus all of serpent kind was punished by having their legs removed by an alimighty being. The ONLY thing that even comes close is legs to no legs. Everything else about that is wrong. Serpents did not lose their legs instantly. Snake brains aren't large enough nor have the proper parts for higher level thinking or intelligence. Snakes have no vocal chords which would make speech impossible. Nor do snakes have any traces of vestigal remnants of any of these organs. There is zero evidence of any almighty being. Humanity didn't start start with just two humans out of no where.

So, it doesn't seems like the people who wrote the Bible "knew" anything. They are creation stories. Ancient bronze age people trying to figure out where they came from and why the world is what it is by using only what they had at their disposal. All of your claims have these HUGE glaring holes in it. What you have done is take a conclusion and only look at information that may support that conclusion while dismissing any information or data that may contest your conclusion, no matter how overwhelming that data may be.

Like I said before, "signs of the end times" have been present throughout history. People have been predicting the end of the world for ages. Please, rest assured that the end of the world is not nigh. If you still feel very confident that it is coming, let us place a wager on it. I am willing to bet everything I own that the end is not nigh. How about you?

The Bible was written so long ago, that it was only an allegory, written for primitive illiterate people, to try to give them information which they had no ability to understand. It would be like trying to teach a baby about Nuclear Physics. So all the information was simplified, taken down to its most simple explanation. You can't really explain the world (or evolution) to a baby. Like: Where do babies come from? Some people just made up the story of the stork. You have to simplify for primitive peoples. Just like the stork example, they used a talking serpent & the apple story, to explain how mankind was expelled from the Garden of Eden. But the Bible gives important geographic clues to tell us that the Garden was in the area of Iraq, near the Euphrates River, & Nebudchanezzer's Palace is still there, & the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Those are not Fiction.

There is NO DOUBT that we have nearly polluted this earth to the point where the oceans & the rivers can no longer deliver a fresh water supply. The radioactivity in the ocean (from Japan's nuke plant) is killing fish that people eat, & it is spreading across the ocean. Scientists say there is no known way to stop this deadly occurrence, if people eat radioactive fish, & no known way to stop the radiation from spreading.

Even the best scientists are telling us that Global Warming is a sign that Earth is in its final stages. An Inconvenient Truth, we got from Al Gore. We can stick our heads in the sand & refuse to see it, or believe it, but things on planet Earth are winding down, & it will yet have to go thru a lot of bad times, like earthquakes, violent hurricanes, floods, & more severe hailstorms. Everything will be in excess, & more damaging to human life. It is a nightmare that has just begun, but the last 3 years are intensifying to peak levels of heat & nature's fury, causing excessive damage & death to the humans in its path. The melting ice caps will cause things undreamed of, that will devastate animal life, & the typical pattern of water currents in the Northern Hemisphere. Frankly, life on this planet will never again be the same, & without cooperation of Big Business managers, to try to stop the pollution & carbon emissions, Life on this planet is doomed, more quickly than we ever thought, or even Al Gore had ever imagined.

What is very interesting to me, is that the Right Wing of GOP claim to be so "religious" that they are the chosen people, & are reaping all of God's blessings, which is why they claim to be so wealthy. (Not of course, due to using every form of Greed imaginable, & keeping their excess wealth in Swiss Bank Accts to "steal" tax money in $trillions$ from the American people & from Uncle Sam, who needs it now to keep this economy afloat. Crooks liars & traitors claim to be the super "Religious" in America these days, as they proclaim across the airwaves & the internet. But they are actually the Anti-Christ, which is the "deceiver" who pretends to be religious, but in actual fact do the OPPOSITE. If you are truly religious, you should be Anti-War, (Jesus was the Prince of PEACE) & if you are really religious, you should be doing Good for mankind, such as charity, helping the poor, the elderly, the sick, the orphans, etc.

BUT AS anyone can plainly SEE, the Right Wing GOP are always the first in line to start another WAR, (like Geo "W" said he "wanted to wage war with 50 nations, lasting for 50 years" (unquote) on the day after 9/11. AND the GOP are doing nothing more than trying to STOP all welfare & charity to the people that need it the most in the USA. IN ALL VISIBLE WAYS, the GOP elected leaders are acting EXACTLY like the ANTI-CHRIST (the exact opposite of Christ & his teachings). Imagine how bad it will be, when they "takeover" the entire US Government.

Yes, of course, the Bible is an allegory, except for the snake losing it's legs. That part is literal. All the bad stuff is allegorical, such as rape being a property crime and slavery is not only okay, but quite good. All the good stuff is literal like love your neighbor. Armageddon is clearly a literal story. There is no way it can be an allegorical critique of the Roman government of the time. Let's all pick and choose what is suppose to be literal and what is suppose to be allegorical. If only there was some kind of answer key to know which to take as which. Or better yet, wouldn't it be great if there was some all powerful being to tell us how to interrupt either.

Let's assume that the "child analogy" is true. You don't explain nuclear physics to children with made up stories about a rabbit going to lunch. The stories in the Bible are so far off from the scientific truth that they can't even be considered allegorical. Take the Garden of Eden and the talking snake again for a great example. Or take a flat earth, or that there are windows in the sky that open to let rain in, or that the Earth is held up on pillars. Essential, you don't teach by telling people things that are completely opposite of the truth.

Not a single reputable scientist is saying that the Earth is in its final stages. Not a single one. Earth will be here long after humans are gone. Global warming won't end the Earth. It could easily cause a severe disruption in the food chain which could lead to a mass extinction. But life will survive. Global warming could cause a major collapse of our culture and society to the extent that billions die, but it is unlikely to wipe out the human race. Humanity has the power to wipe itself out with nuclear weapons, but does not have the power to destroy all the life on Earth, not yet at least.

I'm personally not surprised that the religious party is the more warmongering type. The Bible is full of examples of God wiping out millions of people through war, famine and natural disasters. He especially hates those pesky non-believers. And remember what his son, the so called "prince of peace" said, "I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword." So yeah, not shocked at all by that correallation. Unless, wait, somehow that is suppose to be allegorical. Hooray, cognitive dissonance!

Hi Zach: Interesting exchange of ideas. Like I said earlier, I once had skepticism also, & it was in my science classes that I began to find PROOFS of parts of the Bible. "Knock & it shall be opened unto you, Seek & ye shall find." Among other things, most of my Professors in Science courses, like Physics and advanced Biology, believe in the Bible and in Jesus. (At least 80% of Americans identify themselves as Christians). A friend of mine who did scientific experiments on optic nerves, & teaches Molecular Biology in Zurich Switzerland, was also a leader in the college Christian group. It is not unusual for great minds to still have religious beliefs. I personally would not want to be "treated" by any Dr. who did not believe in God.

Zach, YOU SAID "not a single reputable scientist says that Earth is in its final stages. Earth will still be here long after humans are gone. Global warming could cause a disruption in the food chain, leading to mass extinction. But life will survive. Our culture & society could collapse, & billions die, but it won't wipe out the whole human race. We could manage that ourselves with nuclear weapons, but have no power to destroy the world." (unquote).

SO HERE we have a DIFFERENCE in Semantics. (language). I have been assuming this whole time that the End of the World was synonymous with the end of the human race. I did NOT CARE if the planet was spinning around in the solar system, devoid of life, rotting away in total devastation.
That would be pretty awful, but not my major concern, in cosmic terms. END OF THE WORLD, meant to me, the END OF HUMAN LIFE. You say that we could have terrible events, like "mass extinction" & yet if the old planet kept limping along, with 2 or 3 microbes living somewhere on an ancient rotting carcass of a dead walrus, then you would be satisfied that the "world did NOT END yet. And we had NOT destroyed Life on Planet Earth.

So that seems to be the major difference here, in "translation". MOST OF US talking about this subject do NOT think it is OK for the world to just be spinning along without any human life, or even humanoid species, (or even monkeys) --- we consider that to be the END OF THE WORLD. Not that the whole planet must be devoid of life, but that essentially the only intellectual species (capable of thought & speech) would be gone forever.
No cognitive being to see, hear, or appreciate the vestiges of life on a dying, wasteland of a planet. That would be awful to contemplate. It may be the old puzzle coming back: "If a tree fell in the forest, & nobody was there to hear it, --- did it really make a sound?" (depends on your definition).

Human cultures have collapsed many times. The US will collapse eventually too. Humanity can survive a global, Humans have found a way to live just about anywhere. Our culture will not be able to survive though and we, as a species, may slow down.

Evolution is funny process. Things pop up over time and if it makes the species stronger, it tends to work. Intelligence is an extremely new addition to life on this planet. If we successful wipe ourselves, then it shows that intelligence isn't always a good adaptation for the survival of a species. I've always considered that an interesting thought. If humanity wipes itself off the face of the planet at any time in the 300,000 years, then from life's point of view, the neanderthals would be considered a more successful species.

A great point you have made. Hard for us narcissistic species to accept, but very interesting point of view. If we (the intelligent species) manages to wipe itself out, in only a few millennia, then maybe the microbes & roaches are the best adaptable species, & thus they will SURVIVE. Maybe the Creator (whoever or whatever it may be) was running a CONTEST to see which type of creature would outlive all the other evolutions of life. We do not know all of the answers, or maybe not even the right questions. But isn't it GRAND to be able to THINK ABOUT IT? Sometimes I think that it is such an enigma, how we got here, & WHY have a Cosmos so HUGE that we will never see it all, even with the world's best telescope? And now we know that we delicate creatures can never survive to visit any planets beyond this solar system, or maybe NOT EVEN THAT FAR. So WHY was this big universe put here? And one day, I thought that maybe all things are duplicated in Magnitude, & in Minimal. (Big and Small). The planets in our solar system are fairly well DUPLICATED in the tiny atoms that compose most matter. The swirling electrons, like planets, surround the nucleus, like the sun, and all are in motion due to electrical fields? & gravitational pull? The UNIVERSE is the Giant Version of the TINY ATOM, which is the basic part of all elements of matter. Isn't that alone a fantastic MIRACLE? Planetary motion is invisible due to its gigantic size, requiring a telescope for us to see it, and the motion of the tiny Atom is also invisible, requiring a microscope for us to see it, due to its miniature size. Both are a great mystery to us insignificant human beings. We are too big to exist on the world of the atom, and too small to exist on the world of the planets. We can only be here & observe both of them, at an unpenetrable distance. And wonder how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? How deep is the ocean, and how high is the sky? Which came first, the chicken or the egg? And all the eternal questions that we can never answer.

I read all your discussions with Zach; sorry to say bibles are written by humans; humans are a total independent heap of flesh; nothing controls it; neither any one outside this world entity; take the proof. Talked to dead people lately? As Zach says we are only a substance which may eradicate itself just like any species. So what happens then with all these bibles? They "die" together with all the extinct people. Words and writing is solely a human evolution item. I guess the cavemen did not know how to write and had likely a very small vocabulary. So only nature like hurricanes, thunder and lightning, earthquakes etc. may affect our lives, however they are not controlled by anyone. Humans determine their own destiny; not bibles nor any other human writing. Do not forget paper and ink is dead material what only humans can read, not Martians.
You can get cancer tomorrow; did anyone steer this to any particular person?, I guess not. Things happen to humanity over which humans have no control; neither do any human invented "god's" control the world. Even if this whole world blows up; the universe will continue like nothing at all happened. Millions of stars will keep on shining in the evening sky. Humans with their bibles mean nothing at all in this huge universe; only a kind of silly human invention which is only about 8000 years old to cover up fear and inferiority. The universe is sorry to say quit a bit older than bibles.

Good discussions here. As I have said in other posts I try to be respectful of others' religious beliefs...except when their beliefs are imposed on government policy and hence affect me.

In the case of Armageddon, there are many many people that believe in this prophecy, but as Jon Basil Utley notes in his 2007 article in Antiwar.com,

    Amtiwar.com, October 11, 2007: America's Armageddonites

"Millions of Americans, the richest people in history, have a death wish. They are the new "Armageddonites," fundamentalist evangelicals who have moved from forecasting Armageddon to actually trying to bring it about.

"These Armageddonites believe that they alone will get a quick, free pass when they are "raptured" to paradise, no good deeds necessary, not even a day of judgment. Ironically, they share this utopian fantasy with a group that they often castigate, namely fundamentalist Muslims who believe that dying in battle also means direct access to Heaven.

"These end-timers have great influence over the U.S. government's foreign policy. They are thick with the Republican leadership. At a recent conference in Washington, congressional leader Roy Blunt, for example, has said that their work is "part of God's plan." At the same meeting, where speakers promoted attacking Iran, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay glorified "end times". Indeed the Bush administration often consults with them on Mideast policies. The organizer of the conference, Rev. John Hagee, is often welcomed at the White House, although his ratings are among the lowest on integrity and transparency by Ministry Watch, which rates religious broadcasters. He raises millions of dollars from his campaign supporting Israeli settlements on the West Bank, including much for himself. Erstwhile presidential candidate Gary Bauer is on his Board of Directors. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson also both expressed strong end-times beliefs"

Utley wrote his article six years ago, but as the cast of names changes with time, their belief in making Armageddon happen continues. He refers to them as the Armageddon Lobby, those Dispensationalists that revere the Book of Revelation. The Armageddonites according to Utley, "worship a vengeful, killer-torturer Christ and they quote a biblical passage that God favors those who favor the Jews. But they only praise Jews who make war, not those who are peacemakers. For example, they vigorously opposed Israel's murdered premier Yitzhak Rabin, who promoted the Oslo Peace Accords."

Using their interpretation of the Bible, the Armageddonites promote government policies that America must protect Israel including encouraging settlements on the West Bank in order to help God fulfill His plans. "The return of Jews to Palestine is central to the prophetic vision of the Armageddonites, who see it as a critical step toward the final battle, Armageddon, and the victory of the righteous over Satan's minions."

Utley goes on to describe in more detail how their beliefs are transcending into government policies. You can read his interesting article in full at the above link.

Which ever way you look at it; does it really matter? People die all the time. So if they die all at once, no one will notice that anyway. But good riddance of all the freaky Armagededdonites and the end of all wars as well. May be only cockroaches survive. Wow.
