Obama wants to punish the Assad military for using chemical weapons so he has decided to use bombs and missles to kill more innocent people who had nothing to do with using these chemical weapons and as a result add more fuel to the fires of anarchy raging in that region of the world, of course logic, good judgement, reason and common sense are traits the U.S. Government has lacked for 2 generations and you can bet your bottom dollar that the members of the U.S. Congress won't interrupt their 2 month vacation no matter what the Executive Branch is up to; checks and balances in this government have become extinct.

Extinct is a bit of a hyperbole but when it comes to military action, Presidents do seem to be ignoring the checks and balances more. While the President does control the military he has to have permission from Congress which use to be a formal declaration of war. However, the Truman Administration set a new precedent with Korea and it's kinda been downhill from there. No longer does the U.S. declare war. They just have military actions. Of all the "wars" we have been in, the US has only declared war 5 times: 1812, Mexican-American, Spanish-American, WWI, and WWII.

So yeah, the checks and balance system needs to be repaired.

It is interesting to note that Obama is being severely criticized by BOTH sides of this question. If he does NOT act, he is too "weak" & "wishy-washy" & if he DOES ACT, he is too aggressive, too reckless, & too egotistical. There appears to be NO WAY he can WIN on this issue.

Why did he ever take this stance in the first place? Just think, he had to make a speech & major appearance at the Martin Luther King memorial this week. There are literally Wars & Rumors of Wars all over the globe -- all the time. He has to deal with an INSANE Congress that won't do ANYTHING that makes any sense to protect & preserve our Nation or our Liberty. Our ECONOMY is totally at risk, which could cause world-wide Economic crisis, & make us officially bankrupt. He is trying to protect minorities & women, from losing our RIGHTS, including the Right to VOTE or make our own decisions about pregnancy or abortion. Obama helps Workers who are just trying to "make a living" that ALLOWS them to LIVE, and the major corporations are so very greedy & selfish, that they would fight to the death to PREVENT American workers from living under normal standards.

So now remember that OBAMA has a real FULL-TIME JOB, where he is required to be at a hundred places every day. He has to make appearances at important events, & charities, & meet with our soldiers, members of Congress, give out awards, encourage union workers, visit factories, visit sites of catastrophe or floods, have social events with Repubs, so they don't criticize him for being "too aloof." He also has to be a husband & father, to his wife & 2 daughters. He has a daily schedule that would kill an Arnold Schwarzenegger (in his youth). While signing legislative bills & working on speeches, & trying to keep up UN coalitions & protocols with foreign nations. COULD the MAN POSSIBLY be a little bit TIRED? Could he have such a huge burden put upon him for the last 5 years that he could actually be lacking sleep & lacking Free Time to refresh his mind & his spirit?

PLEASE, CUT HIM SOME SLACK. (We happen to have a world-class leader in the White House, & he is doing an excellent job.) I have studied many of our finest Presidents, and Obama is definitely among them. He is brilliant, wise, calm under pressure, thoughtful & logical, is a man of the people (not a man of the corporations), & he is a Constitutional Law professor. He has Christian values, & yet understands all religions. He has perfect manners & grace in all his interactions, including international ones. He is comfortable with all people, from all walks of life. He has a great sense of humor, and has true compassion for others. In short, he is PERFECT for the job. NOBODY could ASK ANY MORE THAN WHAT HE HAS GIVEN.

And he is doing it for minimal wages. Most corporate (crooked) executives make FIVE or TEN TIMES what the President gets paid for a year. So we should be extremely grateful for his incredible service to this country. No president in history has had to deal with such an insane Congress, who are actively trying to destroy his Presidency, (not to mention destroy this nation). THANK YOU, President OBAMA, for being willing to serve us.

CUT HIM SOME SLACK. (Geo Bush spent his days watching his dog Barney chasing armadillos at his Crawford TX Ranch:)
No, wrong again. I do not pity Obama. In the first place if you want to become President over 350 million people, then you should know what the job is all about. If you purely run for your ego and beautiful speeches, forget it. The Washington culture will eat you alive. I did work in that environment, so I got out in time. The "chainsaws" are humming and ready to cut your legs off; so be prepared!!
Things like you describe are only window dressing; the things which are going on right now have been engineered by "the gang" (elements of both parties) over a long time; finally they got him cornered; so it is now a question what will prevail his ego or changing the game. We'll wait and see.

Interesting that you said the Washington gang has finally gotten Obama "cornered," & this does describe very well what has happened in the last few days with this Syria incident. If he attacks they can say he is a warmonger, and if he does not, he is too "weak." One side is bragging on his stance for waiting for the UN, and the other side wants to criticize him for not taking independent action. It is a NightMare. But leave it to the GOP to try to put Obama into a situation where there IS NO RIGHT SOLUTION. Either way they can tear him to pieces, even if it is NOT justified. And there is nothing the GOP likes better, than to keep Obama on the defensive.

I think Obama put himself in this position where there is no right answer or solution, sometimes I think he gets caught in his own rhetoric when speaking about about certain things that he feels is right but because of the nature of man can not come to fruition, and then he goes off teleprompter and speaks from his heart, which on a World Stage can led to disaster .

Yes President Obama did this to himself with his stupid remark about Assad not crossing the "RED LINE". No one made Obama say that, and he now realizes how wrong that statement was.

And this morning on ABC Sec Kerry is STILL talking about Assad crossing the line.

Obama gave all the ammunition to his critics and people in his own party, too. If the president wants to see who did this to him he need only to look in the mirror.

Note to Obama administration: Stop talking about "THE LINE"!

Geez, we are supposed to believe people are really motivated by infantile "phrases" like "Cross that red line, hombre, & I'll blow you away."
Holy Cow. I thought that stuff was only for them old "cowpoke" movies, & the horse operas of a bygone era.

I can just see Obama wearing cowboy boots, spurs, & a white Stetson, as he ambles up to the Last Chance Saloon, sits on a bar stool, and orders himself a cactus soda. He tosses it down in one swallow. Then he strides thru the swinging doors, squints into the sun, spits in the dust, & fires a volley of shots into the air. Then he slowly sez: "All right, you underslung skunks, which of you gas guzzlin', air pollutin', Neanderthal neo-cons, wants to be NEXT, to cross my "red line"? They all turn white, & scurry for cover. For Obama is the greatest "gunslinger" in these here parts.

eternal flame I think you are right. President Obama IS acting like a cowboy who is out of control. The ..."bygone era"... of cowpoke movies has returned. He has made up his mind to start blasting away and nothing will stop him. YEE HAW!!! It is unthinkable that we elected a "Peace" president and this is what we got.

Yes, the threat of crossing the "Red Line" was said by President Obama and repeated by Sec Kerry and so it looks as though they really mean it. 100,000 Syrian dead and we have no problem but 1,400 dead by chemicals and we will start the bombing but first we will give you plenty of warning so that you can hide the best targets. Unbelievable stupidity!

The highlites (lowlites) of Sec Kerry is on TV again this evening and he is fighting a losing battle trying to defend President Obama. It seems as if the decision has been made and the call for Congress to approve action is merely a formality...it appears that Obama is going to attack Syria with or without the approval of Congress.

    Let the countdown begin.

Sorry the countdown started years ago; there are plenty of "elected" figures in Washington who despice a black President and will play the old Washington games and chew on it piece by piece to get him to fail. It is not only Republicans; there are quite a few Democrats who love to put nails in his coffin. That is how Washington works. Do not underestimate Kerry either he helped an awful lot to get him into this corner.!!

Dutch I was referring to the countdown on this particular military bombing.

Kerry keeps backing up what President Obama says, and that's his job, but I keep wondering if he REALLY agrees with all of it. As a combat veteran I would think he would want to do everything to NOT take military action.

Maybe he does agree with all of it or maybe he has sold out.

"jamesn" do not forget Kerry tried to run for President; thus he has an ego; so why not "support" Obama so he gets the credit, if at all any credit is to be gained from this disaster.

To hear all this talk about creditability, both Presidential and National, and drawing lines in the sand so to speak, I think what is forgotten is that the US is seeking to bomb another sovereign nation without approval from either this Nation's Congress and also the United Nations because that particular Nation ,Syria and its current leadership are embroiled in a Civil War and one of the sides used Saran gas on the civilian population, if the US goes it alone in this venture and proceeds to bomb that country ,no matter how limited, the repercussions will be catastrophic, both in retaliatory strikes on our Allies and possibly some of our own home grown terrorists will strike here, you can't stop them all, it only takes one terrorist to get thru and finish his mission. I know all about the humanitarian reasons and concerns but when 1 American family buries one of their own due to this reckless move by our leaders, explain to them the humanitarian reasons why their family member is either maimed or dead.

Dutch we need to have leaders who have less of a personal ego and who are not so worried about getting personal credit. They should be focused on making America a peaceful, and prosperous country instead of worrying about themselves. I still do not know why John Kerry is pushing so hard for war when he has actually been in combat, and has seen what war does to people. I would expect him to push for peace, not war.

johnny it seems that President Obama had his mind made up to attack. Thankfully he seems to have reconsidered, at least a little. I still hope he does not attack, but if he must then it should be with the approval of Congress and/or the United Nations. To attack a country which has not attacked or even threatened us is bad enough, but for our president to make the decision to attack without any authorization is unimaginable.

I still hope that cooler heads will prevail. More war is not the answer, there's more than enough war in that part of the world already.

As someone who has seen the effects of war first hand, I still believe that peace is the only alternative to the killing fields, now we have the capability to kill from thousands of miles away and our foot soldiers don't even have to fire a shot, we have tried to de-humanize the war and tried to make it safe, while making the actual war seem like a video game, if this true than we will have lost our thirst for peace and we will go to war because it became so impersonal , and that would be the beginning of the end for our Republic as we know it.
