George Zimmerman was acquitted of both charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter Saturday night.

He is a free man. The case, however, will continue to be tried in the court of cable news.

He was not acquitted, he was found not-guilty. There is a distinct difference. Kudos to the defense. As a retired police sergeant I have never seen the likes of this trial. The roles of DA and Defense were totally reversed and SHAME on the Mayor and Governor for bending to political pressure rather than trusting their police department. I, for one, hope that in Florida the fired Chief of Police has legal cause to sue for unlawful firing. It is truly a shame this jury did not serve on the Casey Anthony trial.

acquittal: Black’s Law Dictionary, 8th Edition: n. 1. The legal certification, usu. by jury verdict, that an accused person is not guilty of the charged offense.

I guess I'm not one to recognize the "distinct difference." Or maybe I'm looking at the wrong law dictionary.

As for the police chief being fired...you watch too much Fox News.

My husband and I are SO DISAPPOINTED with the Zimmerman verdict. We are both 69 years old and as White as White can be. We are rural and gun owners. Zimmermann racially profiled Trayvon and wanted to make sure that THESE a..holes didn't get away with anything again. These F...ing---. There was NO "these" out there that night, only a boy. Zimmerman had hate and revenge in his heart and left his car with not only a loaded gun, but a bullet in the chamber, and a vigilante attitude.. He knew the police were on the way and would be there momentarily, but he CHOSE to take the law into his own hands and KILL Trayvon. He has never shown any remorse and believes that the killing of Trayvon was in "God's plan.". Medical testimony X2 said his injuries were "insignificant." The only reason he went to the clinic was to get a release to go to work, not for treatment. His head could not have been POUNDED into the cement. How many fist fights and bar fights have men been in in their lives? So now it is OK if you fall down and bang your head and someone gives you a bloody nose to pull out a gun and kill someone. I guess it is if the victim happens to be black. Remember Zimmerman also told the doctors assistant who examined him that his lower back hurt. He probably landed on his butt and banged his head on the cement. Who started the fight?? Who pushed first or punched first? NO ONE knows but Zimmerman, and he is a proven LIAR. The gun was under Zimmerman's back, where he carried it inside his pants, when he was laying on it while Trayvon was supposedly sitting on him with his knees in Zimmerman's armpits. Either Zimmerman is a contortionist, or he already had the gun out, or Travyon was backing off of him. This trial was ALL ABOUT RACE. We still have a LONG way to go in this country before we ever reach equality, especially in the courtroom. This is a very sad day for justice.

I am a 40+ year old mother with teenage sons and my heart fell and the tears poured when the verdict came in. A mother has a dead 17 year old son and no one to pay for that death. That is very common for many teenage homes in our communities today. Many people also see youths as aggressors as well. If you think about it, many of them have to be aggressive in this aggressive world in order to stay alive. Seeing someone pursuing me, you better believe I am going to take on an aggressive mode if I am going to stay alive. I believe that was on Trayvon's mind as he was about to be pursued. Wow, he must have been thinking that I have two things right now which is candy and a drink to defend myself with, but remembered his two hands that God give him and his father may have thought him to use. To the Martin's Family, I say God is in control and He sees all things and knows what is best at times for us. My prayers are with you and the family. We may not understand why things happen but I believe that everything happens for a reason. We are far from not being racist in our communities. If it is not physically being displayed, it is displayed in the minds of many. George Zimmerman is guilty. He knows that, the defense knows that, we all know that, and the odds were in his favor. The biggest mistake the prosecution allowed was an all woman jury. As a mother my thoughts would be on the need to get home as quickly as possible to my children. I believe that there were jurors who wanted to find George guilty but the majority singing they want to go home tonight to their families probably weighed in more. Unfortunately, the Martin's Family did not have their own criminal attorney in their corner. I am not sure why the NAACP did not jump in an offer to assist in this area. Maybe they did or maybe they didn't but I believe that if the state was not the prosecutors then this case may have gone another way. There is one thing when someone is fighting for you, and there is another thing when someone fighting for you wants to win and will do everything possible to make sure you do win.

Regardless of this outcome; one should honor our justice system. Due to the racial overtone it boils down to; as the law says " absolute proof". which was not there according to the jury.

As a note do not forget this is "gun" country; any kid can carry a gun too; if this kid would have had a gun on him, would he have used it ?
So I guess the whole country is guilty by refusing to approve/install proper gun laws.

I was so disappointed and saddened by the verdict! There were people celebrating and doing fireworks to celebrate. How can some people celebrate when a young man is dead?! Zimmerman didn't sustain injuries that required any medical assistance, yet he felt the need to kill someone. I really don't understand how any jury can justify that. I have three sons and if someone was following them I am sure they would feel threatened as well. But I guess now if you are being followed you better not approach the person because they have the right to kill. I guess in the state of Florida a person can kill their babies and unarmed citizens and not have to worry about prison. Such a shame, especially for the Martins! They will never see their son again, while George is free to walk the streets. Something must be done about racial profiling, I very much doubt had Trayvon been a white young man this would of happened. Sad but true!

Everyone seems to know exactly what is profiling, my take is that profiling is taking action against someone based solely on suppositions that rely only on stereotypes, in Georges case he couldn't profile because he didn't know the race of the individual, it was dark and raining, but what he did know it was someone he did not know from the housing complex, and with the recent spate of home break-ins ,he felt it was his duty to ask who, and what are you doing here, again that is not profiling, now Trevon had no duty to answer any ones questions especially someone he described as a creepy assed cracker, but he also had no right to punch George, the idea that Trevon was in fear of his life is the reason given for punching George is absurd, this whole incident is an indictment of our current social structure, what really happened is a horrible tragedy that could have been easily prevented if both individuals were more civil towards one another rather than allowing this event to devolve into a game of machismo, there might of been a much better ending to this story.

Anyone who looked at this case with open eyes that were not filled with the pure tears of emotion, and instead clear with common sense have been saying for this entire event that it was a tragedy that this 17 year old kid was killed, but Zimmerman was not this monster the media, the black community and celebrities, and just the good old fashion racists were trying to make Zimmerman out to be. The police did the investigation in the very beginning and said there was no wrong doing, but due to the outcry of racist people screaming for the death of Zimmerman because a white guy, which Zimmerman was considered in the beginning, killed a black kid. This was a media trial because the police called it right in the first place. The famous black trouble makers like Sharpton and Jackson, the new black panthers and others played it all up in the media and got the public stirred up until the Governor got involved and could now be in trouble herself. This case was a joke to begin with, and it was proven as one with the verdict.

No parent should ever have to lay a child to rest, I lost a child many years ago, and after 25 years, I still think of her everyday. I still cry on her birthday and the day we laid her to rest, I still think of her on holidays and the pain is still as sharp today as it was 25 years ago. No parent should ever feel that pain. My daughter was hit by a drunk driver as she ran into the street after her ball. I dont blame that driver anymore and havent for a long time, all the blame has stopped for anyone and everyone involved, but the pain of the loss, is as fresh today as it was that day. I feel bad for Trayvons parents, but they had to have seen him heading down the wrong path because the move to his fathers was in order to change his ways of trying to be a thug, and gangsta, and a criminal. The knew his life was in danger being a part of that environment, that is why they tried to change homes and parents in hopes that it would get his head on right and out of that dangerous environment. They were afraid of something happening exactly as it happened that deadly and tragic night. BUT, to try and place all blame on Zimmerman, was not going to bring Trayvon back, or change the fact that both parents saw this tragic end as a possibility otherwise they wouldnt have tried to change his path in life.

I knew he was not going to jail over this, and I agree with the verdict because the evidence never showed Zimmerman guilty of anything more than bad judgement in following Trayvon. May be dumb, but not illegal. Now, lets see how racial this turns with the verdict, lets see who comes out to make this all about race and how the white man is so evil. Lets see who the true racists are now.

I will agree with you on one major point you are trying to make, this trial WAS all about race, but it wasnt about the whites being racist against black people. No, this trial was and will still be about the racist feeling of blacks in this nation against whites. The only reason this trial ever began was the black racist groups like the new black panthers, or just racist people like Sharpton and Jackson, and even including our own President who has a record of supporting blacks and blaming whites, all coming out and demanding justice for an innocent young black man who did nothing wrong. And as we found out more of the facts, Trayvon looked less and less innocent. From photos of him looking like a thug to his record of drugs and other legal problems, and more.

This trial was pushed into our courts because of race and only because of race, and the right verdict was reached, and now we get to see just how race will determine the fallout of this decision.

The State Atty. Gen. Angela Corey has been indicted by a Fla. Grand Jury for willfully withholding photographic evidence of George Zimmermans injuries from the Defense so as to obtain an arrest warrant for Second Degree murder, she could be disbarred, but I doubt that since she was only following the Political instructions from someone higher up in the food chain. This case gets stranger by the minute, the grand Jury she bypassed to get this case to trial now has indicted her.

If the roles were reversed and it would of been a white kid that was killed by a black man noone would of had to get involved. The black man would of had charges brought against him and people would of been asking for the death penalty. When a white person claims stand your ground against a black person 34 percent are found not guilty. When it is a black person killing a white peron using stand your ground only 3 percent are found not guilty. There shouldn't be just one gender or race with any jury. When is the last time you saw a white person on trial and all the jurors were black? I can almost guarantee not too many people would feel comfortable with that. Why not have all black jurors for the George Zimmerman case? If it would of been all black jurors there would of been people complaining but yet a black person is just suppose to except it and move on. Oh yes we have come a long way, but its tragedies like these that make it more apparent how far we have to go!

A jury may have found Mr. Zimmerman not guilty, but that doesn't mean that he was right in what he did. As much as people want to keep this as an individual case, this is proof of a much bigger problem that we have in this society. When a black person is killed, the immediate reaction of so many people is "what did HE do?" What was he doing wrong? Why was he walking while black?

I ask those people that believe Zimmerman had a right to shoot an unarmed black teenager how they would feel if the roles were reversed. What if an armed black teenager was stalking Zimmerman, demanding that he stop and talk with him? Would Trayvon have a right to "stand his ground" and shoot Zimmerman through his heart when a fight broke out? I would venture to guess that Trayvon would have been arrested that night and the verdict would have been different had the roles been reversed.

Our justice system is absolutely broken when it comes to justice for our black citizens. It's broken because our population allows it to be. As much as we claim to be a free and open society, that is often not the case for millions of our citizens. So many of our citizens are guilty until proven innocent.

Again I say where is the outrage ,the outcry, the condemnation of those persons who are responsible for the horrific body count in Chicago, and it's still growing, since July 1st, of this year, over 75 shootings and the death of over a dozen people ,most of them black, and also most killed by other blacks, so save your sentiments for Trayvon , when actually he was the only one who committed a crime , that being the assault on George, ask the DOJ what are they going to do about the carnage in that city, is there not some type of Civil Rights being violated by these thugs in Chicago, what has the Rev. Al Sharpton proposed as well as the Rev. Jesse Jackson to help the citizens of Chicago, are the City officials so inept that they have lost total control of America's 3rd. largest city. Now that is news worthy, not the verdict of a trial that held no evidence, no fact witness's and questionable state witness's to be able to surpass the threshold of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

I agree with you about the horrific violence in Chicago and many other major cities throughout this country and the lack of media attention to them. That has nothing to do with an unarmed black kid being stalked by a vigilante neighborhood watch volunteer and the greater issue of that vigilante getting let off because the other witness had a bullet put through his heart.

And you didn't answer the greater question I posed. What if the roles were reversed? What if Trayvon was the one with the gun stalking Zimmerman?
