The NRA and virtually every interest group supporting right-wing causes pale into insignificance when compared with the numbers of animal lovers in this country. Nor can they match our passion. For a long time, I have been trying to convince the Democratic party to make overtures to this neglected group and try to bring fully them into the fold. Thus far, I have failed. Now, I've taken a new approach: I've written a novel, "The Mayor of Pig Town," about the fictional murder of an animal rights activist working on a pig farm. The book takes a distinctively political turn when one of the dead man's friends decides to run for mayor of the small town in which the farm is located. It is a book that proposes that, by putting together a coalition of heretofore neglected interest groups, power can be restled from the Republican party even in those areas where they are strongest. The bottom line is that we liberals can win anywhere, if we devote the resources to it and are willing to think outside of the box.
