Kate Middleton, or Duchess of Cambridge, whichever you like to call her, is expecting to give birth this month. I not exactly sure what and how many titles this baby will have, I don't keep too current with the royal family. Just thought I'd let everyone know that there will be a new royal.

Okay...I'll bite. Here's some humor. First, for those familiar with the Finnish culture every expectant mom in Finland receives a baby box as discussed in this BBC article.

BBC News Magazine, June 13, 2013: Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes

"For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It's like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates. It's a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it's designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they're from, an equal start in life.

"The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers. It contains bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products for the baby, as well as nappies, bedding and a small mattress. With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby's first bed. Many children, from all social backgrounds, have their first naps within the safety of the box's four cardboard walls."

You can read more about this tradition at the BBC link above.

Now the Finnish government has sent one of those boxes to Kate Middleton as a gift from the Finnish people for their new born. And amongst the baby stuff in the box was a box of condoms

Mirror News, July 2, 2013: Kate Middleton given CONDOMS from Finnish government to mark royal baby

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have received an unusual baby gift from the Finnish government - condoms.

"The bizarre present features in a box of goodies sent to the expectant parents to congratulate them on their impending arrival - but perhaps encourage them to have a break before planning a second child. It was presented to William and Kate by the Finnish social security service Kela, obviously keen to get in early before the Duke and Duchess are swamped with gifts."

The Daily Mirror is a tabloid paper in the UK that likes to use sensational headlines. Included within that baby box, of course, are other baby stuff..."a snowsuit to keep Baby Cambridge cosy, leggings, colourful romper suits, a hooded bath towel, hairbrush, nappy cream and a teething toy." The The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge received the same exact baby box that is delivered to every new mom in Finland. I hope they understand the Finnish symbolism...that the gift is meant to give "all children in Finland, no matter what background they're from, an equal start in life." Will the royal baby be any different? Will the baby sleep in the box?
