Sam Stein, Huffington Post, June 24, 2013: IRS Targeted Progressive Groups, Too, Documents Reveal

"WASHINGTON -- The Internal Revenue Service targeted progressive groups applying for tax-exempt status in addition to conservative ones, according to IRS documents released by congressional Democrats on Monday.

"The documents and an internal IRS report being sent to congressional committees reveal that the tax agency used terms that included "progressive" and "occupy" to flag progressive organizations for extra scrutiny before the 2012 elections.

Not only progressives were targeted. The IRS BOLOs (be on the lookout) were applied to "organizations across the ideological spectrum including groups advocating on behalf of Israeli settlements who were applying for non-profit 501c4 status."

Rep. Sander Levin (D-Mich), wrote a letter to Treasury Inspector General J. Russell George "asking why he had omitted information about the IRS's broader BOLO scheme when he released the findings of his audit report about tea party targeting by the tax agency on May 14."

“The audit served as the basis and impetus for a wide range of congressional investigations and this new information shows that the foundation of those investigations is flawed in a fundamental way,” Levin said.

So while the Inspector General's report unearthed flaws in the way the IRS screened organizations for closer scrutiny, it is a bit surprising that so much was made of the IRS's Tea Party focus while nothing was said at all about audits of organizations with the words "progressive" in their mission statements.

Could it be the the Inspector General, J. Russell George, a Bush appointee, or those in his organization had a political motive?

Was President Obama fully appraised of all the facts before firing the director of the IRS?

Darrell Issa's witch hunt has found absolutely nothing implicating President Obama, yet he presses on oblivious to all the facts in front of him. This is a guy whose brain cannot process information that is contrary to his beliefs. It's called cognitive dissonace.
