On January 14, 1967, John Steinbeck penned a letter from his hotel in Saigon that attempted to explain the Vietnam War in a way that had not been explained before. In it he discussed a new type of war with no battle lines and no front or rear, a war that "is every where like a thin ever-present gas." Throughout the entire letter, I couldn't help but think about the parallel's between that terrible war and the current ones that our country is engaged in. Well, outside of the whole draft thing.

John Steinbeck had the ability to explain a horrendous situation in clear and sober terms and in a way that the masses can understand. There are not many journalist out there these days that have a similar ability. Thoughts on Mr. Steinbeck and his storied career?
