The World Health Organization is investigating a team of Dutch scientists who have applied for a patent on a deadly virus known as MERS. The scientists said they only need the to ensure that they get funding for research and have no plans on withholding any information or the virus itself. They have lived up to their word so far, and have sent all research and samples of the virus to research labs around the world.

Patenting a virus as intellectual property makes WHO very uneasy. And for obvious reasons. If getting a patent helps ensure funding to find a vaccine or cure then I think there is something fundamentally wrong with the way research is set up. I've said this before and I'll say it again, health is public good and should and is a great place to spend government money. Thoughts?
