Has anyone seen the 2013 movie: Lincoln, with Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Fields, James Spader, Tommy Lee Jones.... I liked it very much. It showed how Lincoln was thinking many things at the time and it showed his (as per the movie) evolution of his thoughts to reach the point he had reached. And the political pull of Republicans and Democrats. The fact that the Republicans tried to buy any votes that they could. I suggest a viewing if you get a chance (it's on one of the premium channels currently) to rent it or watch in for 4.00 on pay per view. I like the way Lewis portrayed Lincoln. I liked it very much. His wife was 1/2 crazy as well. It so covers much of the controversy being discussed here.
a movie is your source for historical accurate portrayals of people? Well, I guess it's easier than reading.
Just unquestioningly consume whatever they present to you and accept it as facts...

LMAO..ok..I can't argue with "logic" like that.
Now you're just being hateful. By the way, I'm glad your side lost and that they took away your relatives "property". I guess you won't rent the movie.
Have you looked at any other topics on this site ? There are more......

My relatives were like 95% of the other southerners who fought for independence... They owned no slaves.

Why are you against the south seceding from the north?
How do you feel about the colonies seceding from england in 1776? You think that was a good idea, right?

...and seriously...looking to movies or entertainers for accurate portrayals of historical events is no way to learn history.

Sorry but no one here seems interested in what you have to say about anything!

Well, I don't blame them. Facts and truth always scare off the agitators. They can't debunk them so they abandon their position and (try to) change the subject.
    Tedious and predictable...

I notice you have not contributed one single fact, link or relevant on topic comment to this discussion.

    I know why, too. ;)

Well, actually, I agree with you! The North should have let the South go its own way. The North would be a lot better off today without the burden of supporting the South. Y'all could still keep a few slaves around and have your segregated schools without the pretense of calling dem church schools, separate drinking fountains and rest rooms, fer sure, not to mention dem buses and lunch counters fer whitey only. Funny ting how dat US guv'ment gives back a lot more than it takes in in from all dem Southern states, ain't it? Even stranger though, a lot of people would call YOU the agitator (and, they would be correct).

Had Jefferson Davis won the war, I seriously doubt that the North, as it was, would have survived without major changes. The Constitution would have been considered practically worthless would have likely been replaced, with what, I'm not sure. If it wasn't replaced, then other states would just leave the Union whenever a vote didn't go their way and ultimately, whats left of the country would dissolve.

The Confederate states would have drafted their own Constitution. Likely with a very weak and ineffective central government that would have failed in the same manner as the Articles of Confederation. The institution of slavery in the South would have solidified and continued for at least 75 years. The economy in the South was solely dependent on slavery. 33% of white Southerners owned slaves and every industry relied on it. There is little reason to believe that it would have ended any time soon.

When 1917 would finally roll around, America would have not been in a position to enter the war. No influx of troops to the Western front which would have caused The Great War to carry on. No Treaty of Versailles. The war could end in a stalemate, leaving Germany in a far better position for the 1920's and 30's.

Here is where it gets interesting. Because Germany isn't constrained by the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler is never able to gain traction. He never rises to power. WWII and the Holocaust never happen. So there it is, South losing the war causes the holocaust. (Not to be taken seriously, just trying to get back the fun aspect that this post was started as)

But in all seriousness, we need to remember that the North didn't want to abolish slavery for racial or human rights reasons. Some abolitionists did, but that wasn't even close to being a common feeling. If you take Lincoln and somehow transport him to today, he would seem just as racist as anyone in the KKK. The North was not some beacon for civil liberties. Blacks had little to no-rights in the North either.

I wonder..... if no civil war, how long would the slaves have continued to be beaten, raped, killed, and disrespected..... before they would have raised up and used crude weapons to finally fight back. We'll never know. It is an interesting concept though. They may not have had anywhere to run, but I would have hoped the north would have been decent to them.

They raised up and fought back quite often. There were 5 large scale slave revolts, 3 being after independence was won and a handful of much smaller ones such as slaves turning on and killing their owner.

If the confederacy won, just image what that would have done to major league sports. NFL, NBA and MLB would be so ho-hummy. Of course that would have impacted hot-wings, barbecue, and that great food produced by those that developed businesses after being freed. I realize that many renowned products were developed increasing productivity and an improved America. Those that were slaves in America have given humanity an abundance of heart, improvement and greatness. I just can't imagine how the confederacy could have done it without freeing the slaves. The confederacy was a bad dream in American history. I just wished America would have all banded together for accepting those freed from slavery. There is too many horror stories of ignorance and racism in America. I blame the characterization of people like Jefferson Davis and all his cronies inclusive of the KKK that held back America going further to greatness. Stupidity held us back. Damn the confederates!
