What is going on with Michigan, seriously? After watching The Rachel Maddow Show, where she pointed out the several cities losing their democratic process altogether, in favor of one guy calling the shots to try and right the ship, I feel like they are becoming less and less a legit state by the day. I mean, a state in the US cornerstone's itself on the democratic process. Or... at least the illusion of such. For Detroit and others to abandon it so easily scares me. Whats up?

Governor Gateway just flexing his teaparty muscles. This move and others have made him unsure whether to run again or not.

It's not just this governors fault. Or the one before that. Or the one before that. Detroit has been going down for several decades and there's not just one problem, there's more than we have time to mention here. The previous mayor deserves special mention, however. Mayor Kwame certainly did his part to make things worse. Present Mayor Bing seems to be trying to do good things, but the ship was already going down.

Local government and union corruption and the loss of manufacturing are too much to overcome.

A low life Tea Party Guv can no more ..."save the city"... than a low life Democratic Guv, or a low life Republican Guv, or a low life Independent Guv.

    Detroit is beyond saving.

GW, the ball is in your court! I have one friend from MI (and he is a used car dealer) so some honest, objective responsive would be helpful!

The racists all say "it's hopeless" but it would be mean as hell to write of half a million people. The right blames the city of Detroit for Michigan always voting for democrats for president. Then they go and do this(EMs) and wonder why the repubs are hated. Go figure. History teaches that if you push an area hard enough the people leave. The suburbs better help or guess where that moving population goes first. Whiteflight didn't think the whole problem through. Typical crackers. I be a smart whiteboy and thus not a cracker.

It's not a democrat problem, it's a corruption problem compounded by manufacturing jobs leaving.

If you have several minutes just google Mayor Kwame and read the wikipedia site on him. Don't do it if you are in a hurry because it will take several minutes to read it all. I knew he was bad but I didn't know how bad he hurt Detroit until I read it tonight.

Good reading for crackers and non-crackers alike, but only if you REALLY want to know why the city is in such terrible shape. If you already have your mind made up...don't waste your time because it's all racist.

One man can't stop or start the show. As a resident I have been able to watch what has been happening. A state senator said "For a Republican to win president we have to find a way to suppress the Detroit vote". Do you honestly think Detroits problems are only internally derived?

The Republican party has been having a good time, selling off land and property to their rich buddies and when things finally turn around, guess who reaps profit, the same way they are getting power with voter surpression so they can rig the elections to win, we really should have Federal voting rules and not leave that to the states where they can mess with it.

Gems no Detroits problems are NOT only internally derived. As I have already said twice on this thread, the loss of manufacturing has hurt Detroit and perhaps hurt it more than any other city in America.

Take that many jobs out of town, and put that much corruption in town, and you will kill any city.

Detroit did not kill themselves, not completely. But they sure contributed plenty to their own demise.

Ref Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick who didn't do it all by himself but he certainly compiled an impressive resume of waste, mismanagement, and corruption.

ps44 I agree that we should have Federal voting rules, but I don't see it happening.

We also should have term limits for members of Congress.

We should have our troops out of Afghanistan.

There's LOTS of things that we should have.

Michigan is only one example of GOP take-over. They are using flimsy excuses to take away the rights of the people, and to impose a new form of Fascist govt upon them, which is totally anti-Democracy. The basic freedom to VOTE has been taken away, & the rights to petition the govt for your grievances has been taken away. Two of the signposts of democracy and freedom. GONE in a Flash. The elected officials of Michigan are just ignored, & only allowed to do the most basic things. Basically they are just shadow figures, without significance. Any day the Governor's henchmen can make their own laws, & change the name of the city streets, or close down the schools, or sell off the TV station, without any input from the people. It is like martial law, or something totally alien to the American experience. I think this is an experiment, to see how much the GOP can get by with, before the people stand up and revolt. The people are almost like prisoners, with no ability to make a living or have a house, without permission of the Fascist appointees of the GOP Governor. It is like the old story of the frog and the pot. If you put a frog into boiling water, he will sense something is wrong, & he will quickly hop out. But if you put a frog into cool water, & then gradually heat up the water, the frog won't notice much of anything until the water has reached the critical point, & the frog is dead. In THIS case, the people are being put into a pot where they have very little control, their normal govt has been eradicated, & their actions are limited. Gradually the GOP raises the heat, taking away THIS right and THAT petition, & selling off their city assets, and closing down the schools. (As an example). If the people just look around & do NOTHING, pretty soon the noose will tighten even more around them, their jobs & homes & ability to get food will be restricted. Then what next? Executions? Putting the people into a Gulag? Yes, I can hear you shrugging this off. You say: "NEVER in America!" "It CAN'T happen here!"
But who thought peaceful protestors in the OCCUPY movement would be dragged by the hair, clubbed by police, maced in the face with a toxic chemical spray which can blind you. Then arrested? Who thought peaceful protestors against the Tar Sands Pipeline would be handcuffed and arrested in our nation's capitol? Who thought a great deal of our airwaves would be dedicated to GOP/JBS propaganda, to make our people vote for a crazy right-wing agenda, that leaves them jobless, homeless, & in a state of perpetual war? WAKE UP, People.
