Jason Collins, a 35 year-old NBA star has come out and announced that he is gay and looks to join the fight for equality.

Here is the entire article. Let's hope this gives people confidence in not being afraid to be who they are.

It was a big moment as everyone had wondered when somebody in major sports would come out. Clarification: Jason Collins is not and never was a star. He's thought of with incredible respect. Unfortunately he's currently a free agent so it would have been important if he would have come out and still been on a team. He might not get picked up by another team. Not because he's gay but because he's 35 years old and not a star player. Of all of the sports figures they spoke to on ESPN....... every single person spoke very well of this man and everyone wished him well. They all said it was good that this bridge has been crossed - sort of. It will truly be crossed when an active gay player comes out and the narrow minded athletes don't feel threatened taking a shower with him or being naked around him. Jason Collins was last on the Washington Wizards.

In women's basketball, the star player in college the last 3 years was drafted number 1 in the WNBA draft. She then came out and said that she was gay. So she'll be the first pioneer to chart new territory. Britney Griner is her name. Spelling may be wrong. College: Baylor.

Good for him. Someone had to be first and he's it and he's a hero to many, and rightfully so. Correct that he was not a star, no casual fan had ever heard of him, but he was a good enough player to stay in the league 12 years. Being 7 feet tall helped a bit, too.

This was actually a great career move for him because he's much closer to the end of his playing career than the beginning. In fact his playing days may have been over even if he had not come out. Some people think this actually increases his chances of signing on with another team improve with this announcement, thats what some on ESPN are saying. One thing for sure, he's more famous than ever right now.

I wonder if he would have come out if he were at the beginning of his career? It's much easier now after he has made all or nearly all his money.

I'm amazed again on how the "news" presented this; ridiculous!! Sorry to say I do not see any importance to this news. My feeling is even if the guy was green had one leg and six "dings", who cares, as long as the guy can play the game and people enjoy the game. If he wins who cares what he is doing at home; raising rabbits? Who cares!!! Live and let live; said Mohammed I guess.

Dutch there will come a time in the not too distant future when more people think like you. But for right now this is the first guy who is an active player of the four major professional sports to come out. Not a big deal to you maybe, but to other gays in professional sports it IS a big deal. The next one will have less pressure and the one after that even less pressure... Now that the door has been opened, many more will come out. It is just part of the progression of our society, but change comes very slowly sometimes.

Another thing is that it is best that a basketball player came out first. Football and Baseball locker rooms will be much less accepting. They WILL eventually accept but less willingly.

I don't see what the big deal is, Greg Louganis ,an extrodinary and gifted Oplymic Diver, several Golds medals to his credited, came out of the so-called closet years ago, Btw, He continued competing in a Diving Competion even after cracking his head open on one of his risky dives from the platform, that took courage and it also didn't hurt his career any, coming out of the closet, with I might add a lot less fanfare.

A ..."lot less fanfare"... because it is a lot less of a sport , at least to American fans.

How many Americans are diving fans? Even Olympic diving fans? Louganis was a huge star but in a miniscule sport.

Now how many NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL fans? No comparison. What is the money difference in diving and the big sports? Once again, no comparison. Look at the sports page or watch ESPN if you need to prove it to yourself.

Not to say that THAT makes it right it, but that is the difference.

    ALSO,
Diving is an individual sport. Not a team sport. At least not like Football - 53 players. Sadly there will still be homophobes that will be slow to accept this in a professional locker room.

An Athlete is an athlete no matter what the sport, whether or not its in a team concept or an individual endevour, a person in a popular sport is no less or better than any another athlete. Again I say so whats the big deal, Mr. Collins is not at the top of his game ,in fact the age factor is quickly rearing its head, perhaps Mr. Collins wants the notoriety, the.reknown of being the first popular sportsman to come out to enhance his stature for ratings as a sportsbroadcaster, from what I've seen of the more popular sports stars is that are a very self centered group, whether its baseball, football, basketball, these star athletes are very much do for me,me, me.

Right about ..."star athletes are very much for me, me, me"... Of course they are. That's who they are. That's what they do. By their very nature they are ultra competitive and that's what makes them the successfull athletes that they are. Being ..."self centered"... is part of their DNA. Without the drive, that self centered attitude, without that me, me, me mindset then they would be just average people, not professional athletes.

..."a person in a popular sport is no less or better than any other athlete"... and you are right again. The athlete is just as good. The difference is that almost no one knows or cares about the lessor sports and thus, the lessor sport athletes.

Sports is America is a very big deal, probably too big a deal, but 98% of the attention is paid to the big four sports. That's just the way it is.

This guy is the first one to come out in the big 4 sports and THAT makes it a big deal to America. He's not a diver, darts player, horsehoe thrower, rugby player, he's one of the players that America actually cares about...a basketball player.

    You missed the boat.

And the posts below your original point out some of the ways you missed.

I missed what boat , the USS What's In It For Me boat? This man has come out only because his career is waning, and now because he will no longer be compensated as a pro. athlete and he needs to be in the limelight just for a little bit more, he comes out and get labeled as couragous, come on, it's not considered as having courage if you pick the time and place to be couragous, courage usally involves a certain personal sacrifice, what is his sacrifice? To be what he acknowledges now as his true self, he sure didn't reconignize his true self when he was drafted and given I am sure a nice signing bonus or any subsquent contract re-newals with plenty of cash coming his wayI don't know if he received any product endorsements checks, but I am sure he wasn't being his true self then either, I am glad for him to to finally realize what his true self is, is that being brave or couragous ? I don't know ,maybe, but it is certainly not a big deal to warrant all this fuss.

Then I shall explain it to you since Fox has not.
We have known, for years, that were gay guys in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and PGA but that the group culture of the orginazations forbid being gay. He proved a whole bunch of peoples belief about that. Thus we applaud while the right plays it as a media event.

I do not look to Fox or any other so-called news networks for explaination of anyones motives, I look elsewhere,,mostly the Internet via google, chrome,or aol for my news, not for any explainations mind you, this man was not a Star,he was a outstanding athlete, this is common knowledge, you don't get to the pro level by being mediocre, but again , brave, courageous, history making, I can't believe that the news media has such a low standard for elevating someone to being great or courageous. The way media is reacting to this non-news item makes me think that this might be political . BTW, Gems, you continue to try and label me as someone you think you know, I am not a Right thinking automaton, I listen to issue's or non-issues in this case, and form my own opinions based on my reasoning, I am a democrat and have been for a very long time, there were gays when I was in the service, there were gays when I was cop in my office, and this not me defending my position but rather to let you know that I won't be labeled,if anything ,if you want to label me ,then label me as a independant thinking Democrat.

Sorry but your first post let the cat out of the bag.
And notice I pointed out the reason for the media storm and you again said it was just the media making a big todo out of nothing.
