On the previous posting of "Selling the War", I solicited thoughts abouts our armed forces capabilities and even weapons of mass of distruction. As did each of you who have a variety of military experiences and travels. The post was getting long, however I wanted to bring it to home with one of the replies I offered that mentioned in a humous way:

"The submarine will be a last resort, but if they are used it could be more likely a cruise missile. This will be a turkey shoot by the Pentagon discussing options on what they can use and "try out", just like a budding new actress trying out for a bit part in a show.

The big bang, shock & awe and big Bertha use will happen first than the military will wait a few and plan sending in the ground pounders and air superiority. This is overwhelming. So, based on North Korea being knowledgeable of what can happen if they sneeze the wrong way, they will most likely send their big mighty first at some U.S. interest. The carriers and defensive missile systems in the area are prepared to take out North Koreas first action of agression. The remaining time of the war, when announced, will be determined by just how much damage the armed forces are ordered by the Pentagon to take. It could be massive retaliation or it could be like I said earlier a "try out" for the little actress thats wants to be a part of the show. "

The little actress that wants to be part of the show is the point I'm making. Today, the military has released a report on a laser weapon. I remember back in the 70's that laser weapons were being tested. I also remember that the weapon could only shoot once and had to be rebuilt, but it could melt the canopy of a jet. I assume going forward with all this research and engineering that they now have a repeating laser canon. The Navy is putting it on ships and if I heard the news report correctly, I believe they said some ships with this weapon are stationed off North Korea. I was right. The little actress was giving a tryout and real-time. She's waiting for North Korea to open the curtains for her debut in battle.

Maybe the little new actress needs another actor to dance with. Hmmmm.......what else will the military release?

The U S Navy released a video a few years ago about a laser weapon that was being installed upon a few ships. It showed how the Laser could be used to disable an outboard engine with out destroying the craft or killing the crew. Those two issues have never concerned our Navy in the past, I'm unaware of wh they are issues now.

As always new toys of course are only meant to destroy instead of improving society. As I saw the clip, shooting down a slow moving drone, I was not impressed; first of all they have to keep the "beam" concentrated on one spot, which then heats up and then destroys it. I just wonder if a fast moving object is used, if they have then a "lock-on" system which keeps the beam exactly on a certain spot on the object; i.e. if the beam wanders all over the object it will not work. Like in "space" movies there is as far as I know not yet a beam which transfers enough energy in one second shot to destroy an object. But anyway the military budget is unlimited; keeps them of the street so they can play with their toys forever.
