I hear the term but never a definition. Can it be defined? If so please enlighten me so that I'll be able to understand the advocates of "sensible gun control"

Actually I was asking for an honest thought based opinion. With opinion such as this it only helps confirm my beliefs at this time.

The word inalienable is almost forgotton in these discussions of gun control, the framers of our constitution saw it necessary to use that particular word to describe the forthcoming document and its contents, the word itself means being incapable of surrender, transferred or alienated, and the Constitution goes on to describe those Rights, so in essance { Gun Control} is in the hands of and also is the responsibilty of individual, now the Congress can impose sanctions and punishment for the misuse of that right but it cannot ban any weapon that is used commonly both by the military and civilian for defense.

I disagree johnny, Congress CAN ban some weapons for civilians that are commonly used by the military. Otherwise, some citizens on the far sides of one or another political position might, and probably would, have RPGs, every type of automatic weapon, and maybe even some artillery in their possession, and it would be legal. Obviously there is no need to have Congress ban the military from having weapons commonly used by the citizenry.

Here we go again with semantics, my interpetation of it means the word both , weapons both commonly used as means of defense, RPG's are not used by both commonly, nor are missiles or machine guns, but both sidearms and rifles are used commonly. hence our disagreement.

Boone I told you before; this subject has been beaten to death in several topics; so why do you start all over again? Plenty of honest opinions in these. Keep your guns and be happy with it, I don't care!!

Dutch I agree with you about this subject being beaten to death. But this time I'm in search of just what is meant by "sensible gun control". I understand that we all want to take corrective measures to reduce these outbreaks of mass violence. I wasn't trying to start another constitutional debate. Dutch my guns mean you no harm, some of them have been close to your neighborhood many time. I have a family member that has a large tract of land leased for hunting just outside of Immokalee Fl.

As I said many times, especially to "united" that I have absolute no objections against "normal" gun ownership as used for target shooting or hunting; the thing I object to is that plenty of people go totally overboard and have a bigger arsonal at home than the marines.
Sure plenty of space in Immokalee no problem; happy hunting , watch out for the snakes!!

Dutch I can see that there are some gun issues in you area from this news report; http://www.infowars.com/florida-high-school-student-suspended-for-disarming-gun... Yes there is plenty of space in Immokalee. It's actually the other side of Immokalee from you. 15 miles to the closest electricity. The snakes have never bothered me, but my first encounter with a wild cow sure scared the poo out of me.

All people who have guns, hunt or shoot targets aren't rednecks or stupid. Stupid is hating something one hasn't truly considered. That is the root of prejudice, and perpetual ignorance. Shooting for a sport or hobby can be great fun. I got my first gun and proper safety rules when I was four, and training continued. I know...how can you understand at four? Training babies starts when there is a glimmer of understanding. That starts a lot sooner than four. Trust me, I knew not to point my gun at a human. And to this day, with exception of being in the Army, at 62, I have never pointed an loaded or an empty gun at any human, or even myself.

Gun control is mute. It is stupid. Sensible Gun Control is without definition in practicality. Any and all Gun Control has no possible power to stop atrocities. Most, if not all, of the crimes of mass shootings in schools and the like are not because of guns. A bullet or a gun has no will to do harm. It is a tool for hunting, shooting, police, military, and unfortunately, the dangerous. For the hobbiest, it is fun. Those who did those crimes may have access to legal guns, but the moment it was in their hands it was not legal. However, easy access isn't always possible. Getting an illegal gun is just minutes, to hours, to days away. Getting it today or tomorrow, it is still illegal. Gun control didn't stop that. Real "control" should be directed to prevent gun ownership to the criminal (including felons), and the mentally imbalanced. But, you see, that is already is law. And it does not work. It hasn't stopped those horrible shootings, and it will never. Limiting gun ownership will only have a negative result in crime prevention.

Gun control has never stopped crime. The city of Chicago has some of the toughest gun laws in the country. Britain has laws against gun ownership, too. Do you really believe that stops a criminal from getting a gun? It hasn't stopped or reduced crime in either place. In fact, it has the opposite effect. If it were possible to take gun away completely, and there was not a one left in this country or the world for that matter, do you believe that will stop violent crime. An employee of a convenience store stripped of a gun is still in as much great of a danger of being robbed. Without a gun to protect him, one will rob him with a ball bat. Without protection, he will get his head busted. What to do next...Bat Controlled Legislation?

Limiting gun ownership of "assault weapons" is mute and stupid, too! By definition an assault weapon is any gun that is used to assault. That means that an assault weapon used for assault can be a BB gun. Think I'm taking that too far? Change it to a single shot 22 caliber squirrel gun. What would you do if someone stack a BB gun up your nose. You have just been assaulted. Would you be afraid? Sure you would. Even if it is very difficult for a BB gun to take a life, it still hurts. What if it were 22 squirrel gun? Dead is dead. The old Assault Weapon ban had no effect on violent crime. Do we need large capacity magazines? I don't know. Do you need a new set of golf clubs? You have your fun with your hobby of choice. When I'm shooting at targets, it is much more convenient to not reload as often. Any way you weigh the effect of gun control, enforcement remains ridiculous.

Instead of spending money of efforts to make sure guns don't get in the hands of the illegal (make no mistake, the dollars will be staggering), and not restricting to the law abiding, spend it on programs that are humane to help the mentally ill; spend it on larger prisons that house criminals, that don't parole violent criminals back on the streets. That is Gun Control that works.

Here's another suggestion. Let's just designate maybe two states, say Idaho and Montana, but it could be any two adjoining states, and make these the gun states. Anyone with a gun would either move there or already live there, and all guns and ammunition would be illegal outside those states. Gun and ammunition manufacturers would move there, and all could be one big happy family.

Lomax must be in the middle of nowhere; thus I think their only fun is guns, beer, may be Wendy's and a lonely church; that is a big world out there; thus weapon your self because the next "county" may try to take over and occupy ant hill!!!
