Those that engage in armed conflict of a war know exactly what Kerry went through. The problem for Kerry was the Republican base ambushed him in the campaign. It was all politics as I remember well the Pope of the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh condemning Kerry for his two medals received for injuries sustained in combat. The only combat Rush ever saw was avoiding a golf ball on a golf course. I believe Kerry served our country very well. Yes, he protested the atrocities and it was needed to pursuade the leaders pushing our war for their own foolish agendas. Vietnam is not alone in atrocities. Iraq, Afganistan, Syria, Somolia, Libya and severalsmall conrties in Africa have all seen our special forces come in and take care of business. There's no flowers given out to the population, just a force that is hell-bent on completing the mission.

I remember a security guard in my building that served part-time in the National Guard. His job was to train young soldiers so that they would not be killed. That was his words. He was called on special missions every few months especially during the Iraq War. After the war he would take over several young guard to help transition them into a unit. On one detail, he witnessed the Blackwater security group start a conflict. They would drive down a road that had many Iraq travelers in their vehicles and he saw where the Blackwater group threw out a frozen water bottle smashing the window of an oncoming car. The Iraq car stopped and passengers got out yelling and screaming at the Blackwater group. Blackwater killed them all with their weapons saying they were threatened. So, It's not just Vietnam you can talk about there are millions of stories of atrocites that are done during war.

War changes the person who you became growing up with good parents, a great school, having devotion in a church. Many are changed for the worse. I encourage all you writing today on this topic to VISIT a Veterans Hospital. There are several ways you may volunteer. Listen to their stories and even if you were never in the military you find a sad ending for a person that has to live with the pain and suffering he/she endured during and after war. Listen to the media on televison and read in the papers, you will find where our treatment of veterans is sick. Your taxes go to support a Veteran Medical Organization, and you should be concerned about the atrocities in lack of treatments and ignoring the pleas for help from sick and ill veterans. You wouldn't treat a dog that way, so why treat a human being. Atrocities are all around us, it only becomes reality for you when you open eyes and see what's happening.

I now know that I didn't agree with the war but that's not your problem. I thank you for serving our country and I'm glad you came home safely.
    Dutch,
Iraq didn't invade us either. Wait, I don't think that Korea invaded us either. I know that Germany didn't invade us. Now Japan did invade us. All war sucks. Hopefully we can go forward without more young men and women losing their lives because of what idiot politicians decide.
Tony, you've got the right mentality. Sure some wars are unavoidable; like the second WW. The point I'mtrying to make is that we should learn from previous mistakes like Vietnam etc. I've got the feeling that in this country in these cases the warmongers get their way because of all the stuff they built has to be "tested" in the real world (like napalm in Vietnam); mostly they wait for a new generation who's forgotten the past and play their game over and over again.
I imagine not very many Vietnam survivors were partisipating in Iraq, unless they had blinders on. The tools of war are getting more and more sophisticated; and their fingers are itching to test them out. Why built an F35 for billions if you can not use it for the purpose intended?

That is exactly why I posted earlier "Boys with toys must play with them",add to that the Generals and their hubris are always trying to find a way to prove themselves and justify their stars

Number 1 is the fact that it's costing us billions or trillions. The American public should say this is enough. There should be public protest. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any consensus about what's right or wrong. And maybe in this busy multi tasking time, there's no coordinated mentality about fighting what's wrong. Sad.

I don’t know how many of you can remember having drills getting under your desks in elementary or junior high school. TV existed; but it was new and few people had them. Radio was our prime source of news and entertainment. I was asked to a fiends house to see TV for the first time, it was the Kraft Theater and the movie was, “Mr. xxxxxx and the Mermaid”, they year was probably 1947 or 8. A few years later we had McCarthy and his stooge Senator Richard M. Nixon and the Communist Investigations. A favorite series was “I Lead Three Lives”, the tail was of the experiences of Herb Philbrick, played by Richard Carlson. Herb P. and my father were classmates at Somerville High. We were taught about the eventual nuclear conflict with Russia. A big seller for higher income people was a “fall-out shelter”, remember several being built in a different section of Somerville, MA. Korea was an action necessary to stop the advance of Communism.
Ike was the first to send troops into Vietnam; but a small force for training. The fighting was between the Viet Cong and the government, a civil war. Another unseen war was taking place. The leaders were Roman Catholic and a good segment of the population was Buddhist. It was like the Government and Military forgot about the VC and set about ridding the country of Buddhist Shrines and Temples, at the same time JFK had started a program to relocate the population from villages to areas which can best be defined as forts. The locals didn’t like that program at all. Three groups, with 3 different ideas existed in Washington; the DOD, CIA and Government (political). The President’s family were strongly Roman Catholic and he had put his brother into a position of controlling a large portion of the government and another relative was a Bishop or Cardinal who did little to help the situation. We are in an area that I really don’t like now as it has something to do with my views on the JFK assignation; but not a direct link.
The DOD wanted to limit our involvement to training
The CIA was training tribes in Laos which was probably never approved by the White House. They were brought into Vietnam from Laos to help out.
The government was overthrown and the Diem brothers executed / assonated, not approved by the White House. The Vietnam government was not stable from years before the Diem’s took charge and only got worse after 1963.
    Back to our involvement:
We went into Vietnam to stop the Spread of Communism. I remember voting for Nixon and his “Secret Plan to End the War”. I did not vote for him on his second term and didn’t believe he had a plan. It turns out that what ended the war was to agree to the terms that were presented to the French decades earlier. I hope that no one is going to say we won. The only involvement we have won since WW2 was Granada.

For Dutch: I have some plants growing in my yard that I've been trying to get rid of for almost 10 years. Know of a sourse for "Agent Orange"?
For Gemswoven: You must be old to remember, "Winning over their hearts and minds"

Hindsite is usually correct, the exception being politicians. Politicians have exceptions with Ike being one. "Don't let these companies run the Nation." I'm waiting for a book to be published with the title, "Waring for Fun and Profit" it could start with the Revilution.

Yeah; I've got plenty of weeds too; but even the strongest stuff does not kill it; "agent orange" I asked the drugstore but since Vietnam they do not sell it anymore except to inject or swallow. (just kidding)

A friend from high school was on JFK's staff. I got home in '68 and a couple of years later I went to a class reunion where we had got together and ended up talking about the deteriorating conditions which in SEA in general and the differing ideas which existed in DC. More important to him was finding out if I had a picture of a ‘49 Buick Roadmaster Conv. I had thru most of HS.
Not being a big fan of the CIA to begin with, some of info made me less of one.

I wonder what the world conditions would be like if it weren't for big business and the CIA. They can only survive with either a threat of war or a war and feel that anything is acceptable to achieve their goals. When the CIA started their own businesses to fund their special projects I really got worried and things seem to have only gotten worse since the 60's and 70's.

Did anyone else get the Lee Bwllinger pop-up? If you did or do click your answer to vote. You will be brought to the page where you vote and it is not a simple yeas or no answer. I've mention my openion of polls and this is a great example. It redifines the orrigional guestion to a mild GOP view and an extreme Democratic view. It reminded me of the ols Communist Witch Hunt of the 1950s.
"Yes or No: are you still a Communist?
"I never . . ." (was a Communist would have been the rest of the answer)
Interputed: "Just ancer the question. Yes or No?"
    "I plead the 5th."
"See he refuses to answer the question, he must still be a communist."

A lot has changed over the years: "communist" by just saying the word alone you were looked at if you were the devil; nowadays these same "communists" are as us becoming millionairs and billionairs; so what are they in reality; "Capitamunists"?

Communists are indeed enjoying "Capitalism". I was disturbed, but understand, while watching last weeks "Amazing Race". They were in Vietnam and one event placed them in a theater where they had to distinguish a play with specific Vietnamese symbols on various pictures. The play was purely propagandic, but nationalist for Vietnam. They sang about communism and socialism being great and a victory for their countries leadership. Amazing Race continued their participants to a public area where a US B-52 crash was made into a park for it's citizens and tourists. Amazing Race did not refrain from showing in great detail the theater play and the B-52 park. That was why I was disturbed, but I understand, the war is over lets move on. If Vietnam felt it necessary to make the TV viewing of Amazing Race in their country show the world what they can do to those who invade their domain, than let them. I still bristle at the idea it was shown. I'll get over it.

However, yes Communism is indeed enjoying Capitalism. During the showing of Amazing Race, it was vey clear that their country was enjoying America's dollar and wealth to improve their country. I am not up-to-date with Vietnam's humanity issues, but I do know we continue as a country to provide aid and assistance. We have moved from being enemies to become friends, yes, friends with communists. I have friends that continually travel to Vietnam. They have business dealings and they have put the war behind them. A location where one friend received numerous wounds and survived being awarded the Silver Cross for valor, died a few years ago. His friends collected funding and business materials to build a library at the location where he was wounded. Today that library serves many children and is named after the US Serviceman, specifically the for the friend that fought with valor and was wounded there. The library was built after his death in a Veterans Hospital and continues to have our support in books being sent over periodically. Yes, the war is over. But more uniquely is communism continues and they are enjoying the blessings of capitalism.

My nightmare is that some where in the World there is this cabal of Global Corp. CEO's who control everything, and just allow us peons to receive just so much information so that we as a people can continue to be divisive and keep the dollars flowing into their coffers, need a war, you got it, remember war is good for the economy, need a energy crisis, fine ,raise the price of crude, watch what happens, and if nothing is happening ,lets pit religious groups against one another, this way we( The cabal) can remain hidden .

What makes you think that such a group does not exist? I’m thinking of the capitalists that controlled the finances of our nation, and probably much of the world: Aster, Vanderbilt, Lodge, Carnegie, etc. What ever happened to them? It was like they just disappeared in pre 1920’s. These are the wealthy that predate the term “Capitalist”, what I call the “True Capitalists”.
With the Industrial Revolution and Middle Class America taking root the major changes in everything from Wall Street to Society experiencing rapid redefinition period did they just throw in the towel or have they just decided to move on?

    Perry,
Those groups you identified long ago disappearing, they have merged into the secretive "Trilateral Commission", that control/plan business, politics and the economy in accordance of their own agenda. They have long term impacts with future changes that sway the progress we think we have made. They eventually win, not tomorrow, but years ahead type of planning. They can have impacts to Presidents, Kings and Queens, Dictators and the emergence of a countries independence or domination. I'm surprised nobody has brought this up by now. It used to be a common topic in the Vietnam and thru the Senior Bush era. As soon as the gossip starts, they disappear. Sneaky, powerful, possibly corrupt and very secretive, this group has often been identified having meetings in castles, estates and corporations when media finds it favorable to report.

Haven't heard of them for some time. Where are these sneaky people?

As I said previously,My nightmare, but going back to the Assisination of John Kennedy, there was always talk of a secret group and how they took care of loose ends, like Jack Ruby, taking care of Oswald, then later on in prison Jack Ruby is taken care of, Bob Kennedy got to close to the truth when he was the Atty.General, so when he announced his run for the top spot, he was taken care, I believe that there is a group/cabal in charge, directing things, moving pieces around the world stage as if they were chess pieces. This latest move by Cyprus to confiscate the banks money was a big test, but the people won that skirmish, but it did put ideas in other leaders minds.

Maybe indeed we should start a new party the "Capitamunists coffee drinkers party"; this to be oposite of the "tea party"!!!
