I live in San Diego. I have an issue about our GAS PRICES- Im a commissioned sales rep- selling gift items to retail shops. I live alone and have a mortgage. I cannot afford 4.30 per gallon for gas, and my stores arent buying when gas is over 4.00 they say their customers arent buying they need gas to get to work and with these prices all they afford is gas not gifts, this HURTS our economy!

In NV its 1.0O or more a gallon less how can this be one state over for so much less since it ALL comes from the MIddle East?

We need to boost our economy and I personally dont want my condo to foreclose, if I don't have sales this will happen.
Why are not drilling in the US?

Get an electric car and some solar panels, stop giving the system your money, no we don't need to drill baby drill! IF and when we get a real solar leader in America, we won't need gas or coal!!!

I have an electric car and live in a highrise condo which I cannot control the type of roof or windows they have.

Don't you ever park in the sun? Why don't you have a solar panel charging your car on your car roof? And tell your customers if they do the same, they will have LOTS of money for gifts.

Electric Cars are very expensive - I dont have a garage to charge the battery- bottom line the average price of gas is 4.69 which is simply far too much when in New Jersey its 2.50 a gallon less and you are not even allowed to pump your own gas so you pay practically nothing for FULL service.

No problem, it is not your fault, we have no "real" solar leader in America, if we did, we would all be driving for free...Just think what that would do to the fuel tax revenue and oil sales???

My concern is since in this DECADE/CENTURY we are using gas anyways, we should drill in TEXAS we should NOT give the Middle East any of our money which in turn would save us money by getting our gas HERE or in CANADA. Im not saying drill in Alaska which can hurt the fish/animals by any means- if this is what you are inferring?

If I'm not mistaken, electric cars are pretty damned expensive. Out of the reach of many Americans. So they are stuck getting gouged at the pump. Liberals have fought Keystone and the developement of our domestic oil. I'm not sure why they would prefer to get their oil from regimes in the mid east. Either way, restricting our oil supply before we have a real alternative is absurd. It punishes everybody. Especially the poor.

    For our right wing friends,

The fact of the matter is, the oil we get imported from the middle east, is a drop in the bucket compared to the oil we get from Canada and Mexico already. Canada is the number one foreign supplier of oil to America, Mexico is number two and three, with Mexico and Sudi Arbia selling us about the same amount. NO we will not need any of this oil, when we get a real solar leader in America, and for sure what oil we have here for the "oil" companies to profit from(not you or I), would not be needed either!

All it would take for us to not need most of our foreign oil we buy, would be if what President Obama said should happen happens! President Obama said "our cars should dounble their mileage!" Hmm, lets think about that for a second shall we? How can a President say such a thing without already knowing it could happen? You or the majority would think this to be impossible, but the system, President Obama and I know for a fact this is possible. The reason it hasn't happened decades ago and now that President Obama has gotten re-lected is, if our cars get the mileage they could get, oil sales and fuel tax would be a third of what it is now. Why aren't the right wingers holding President Obama to his promise of double the mileage? Why is the majority of America putting up with oil owning our politicians?"

Tee13 you think we should drill in Texas but not in Alaska which can hurt the fish/animals. The question is why are the fish and animals in Texas not as important as those in Alaska? If more drilling is to be done, shouldn't the residents of Alaska and Texas be allowed to decide?

Well, California has the most restrictive environmental laws which translates to the mandated quality and purity of the raw gasoline blendstock that is used in the state. California raw gasoline is the most expensive in the nation because of this purity. California has 20 refineries and all their production goes just to supply California which, as far as gasoline is concerned, is an island in the middle of the ocean and that ocean is named "environmental law". Is anyone left in the state that has the balls to suggest that more refineries should be built?

When you have production disruptions it has instant and deep repercussions in the marketplace because there is no reserve in the state and raw blendstock (or finished gasoline) can not be brought in from outside the state because it doesn't meet Cali's regulations.

Think of it as wine. If I wanted my wine made from the most expensive grapes and only stomped by blond bikini supermodels I'm gonna pay for it . . . Well, you wanted it, you got it so open that wallet!

California also has the 2nd highest tax load in the nation (behind NY). By far the biggest profiteers in gasoline sales anywhere are the governments with their hands in the pockets of everyone in every step of the extraction, refining, distributing and retail sale of the product.

The combined federal, state and local tax load on every single gallon of gasoline sold in San Diego is about 68 cents . . . And there's talk about raising it another 3.5 cents this summer.

So, who's in charge of killing refineries, writing the strictest environmental regulations in the nation and taxes, taxes, taxes?

Fish are as important if there were any in Texas -its dry land where the oil wells are so no fish or animals to be had. In Alaska built around water you have penquins, salmon etc. Texas you have steak and cowboys which have nothing to do where the oil comes from.....

Algernon covered the real reason for higher gasoline prices in California pretty well. If anyone wants to know more, I think the following NBC News article addresses many of the same points:

California voters only have themselves to blame for soaring pump prices

Part of it is higher gasoline taxes in California, part of it is the way oil prices are determined on world markets, and the rest is due to the mandated refining criteria that turns out special gasoline formulas that are unique to California. Hence Nevada refineries do not have the flexibility to send their excess refined gasoline supplies into the California market.

Thank you for explaining, I have lived here 27 years and I did not realize this! I know in Los Angeles they have a lot of Smog which we don't have in San Diego so I thought the gas is the same that NV gets. We literally pay for the beautiful weather in so many other ways as well our property tax and tax on clothing is very high. There is NO income tax in NV and on the East Coast many states dont have sales tax. But I cant imagine living anywhere else so I must just grin and bear it....I hope I don't lose my home over gas prices that is my only concern.

Tee13 I hate to break it to you but there are actually fish and animals in Texas. Yes, it is true, actual living fish and animals. And speaking of animals, I have got to see some of those Alaska penguins.
