President Gerald Ford inherited the Presidency at a time when the public's opinion of the office was at an all time low. Mr. Ford was appointed as Nixon's Vice President after the previous one, Spiro Agnew, was forced to resign after being criminally charged with tax evasion. Nine months after taking over as Vice President, Mr. Ford found himself inheriting the office of the Presidency. Mr. Ford was in no way responsible for any of the wrong doing of his predecessor, but had the unfortunate task of being the first and only President to inherit his tenure due to a President resigning from office. Because of that, and the highly controversial act of pardoning former President Nixon, President Ford was doomed to fail in his bid for a full term in office.
