For everything that Zachary Taylor was, Millard Fillmore was not. President Fillmore not only signed the Compromise of 1850, but signed the Fugitive Slave Act along with it. If there was anything that set the wheels in motion towards a Civil War, it was the signing of this act. It not only started galvanizing the north towards getting rid of slavery all together, it enabled the south to dig in their heels for future political battles regarding the issue. One has to ponder if he really believed that the act he signed would actually stop a civil war from ever happening or if he just wanted to kick the can down the road so another President could deal with. I guess we will never know.
