As the President has asked us to do, and because I live in Mississippi where the Republican governor has appeared on TV saying he will NOT follow any Federal Law that imposes any additional gun restrictions on gun owners, I composed and sent a letter to our governor today. I would suggest to all readers that since no harm can come from doing this, it is a good thing to do in trying to help the President get his proposals passed in Congress. If your governor or other state official has made similar statements, feel free to use my words to show them that you disagree. If not, feel free to use any part of my letter to make your point, but please at least send something. Here is what I sent:
Dear Governor Bryant:
In recent television commercials, you have appeared as a spokesperson for what you believe is a violation of Constitutional Law and improper interpretation of our Constitution itself by our President. I am writing this letter, as urged to do so by our President, to advise you that this great country of ours has been, and is, under the assault of the N.R.A. and some of its members. If you think I am wrong, or speaking in error, just show me where in the constitution there is even one word expressing the right of citizens to own weaponry of equal or more fire-power than that possessed by the police or the army, or where it expresses the right of citizens to the ammunition for that same weaponry, even ammunition that can be fired automatically, and by using prolific ammunition clips.
No sportsman needs this many shots before reloading. I can see where maybe a shooting range owner could inventory several of these types of weapons and their ammunition, if there are people who want to become proficient in the operation of these types of guns, BUT there is no place for them amongst our citizenry. Does anyone actually believe that the United States is in danger of being attacked by soldiers or gunmen running around the neighborhoods of America, looking to shoot and eliminate the average citizen, and that our Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines together could not stop them?
Wayne LaPierre is living in a fantasy world. The N.R.A. pays him right at $1million/year and I am afraid it has gone to his head. Maybe he passed college courses, but that was before his mind became enslaved by the world of firearms.
Governor Bryant, your message saying that you will not follow Federal Laws that would impose any additional restrictions on gun owners is undoubtedly almost criminal in itself. That would be like a citizen of Mississippi giving a TV interview, where he/she says I will not follow Mississippi law if there is a higher tax on "anything" because I feel I am taxed enough. If you witnessed such a performance, and believed it to be honest and true, what would you do as governor, especially if a higher gas or sales tax was on the horizon?
