House Democratic Leadership stays the same

House Democrats recently voted to keep the same leaders that they had in the previous Congress despite the fact that the Democrats did not regain the House majority. Representatives Pelosi, Hoyer, Clyburn, and Larson have many accomplishments and helped reverse some of the tragic losses that Democrats took in 2010. Many will say that the Leadership should not be blamed for 2010, myself included, but that doesn't mean that Democrats need to start thinking about who Leader Pelosi will hand the torch off to in the future.

Three Democratic leaders are in their 70's and Representative Larson isn't too far behind at 64. I'm not suggesting that they are not qualified to serve as leaders. They have proven themselves to be strong leaders both in and out of the majority. It still begs the question of where the Democrats are going into the future. What kind of party will they be? What will they fight for? When should the "old guard" start to step aside and let a new generation of Democrats ascend to Leadership positions?
