Fox News Publishes Name Of SEAL Who Led Bin Laden Raid

Fox News today published the name of a U.S. Navy SEAL who led the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan last year that ended up in the al-Qaeda leader’s death. The SEAL under the pseudonym Mark Owen is the author of a book set to be released on Sept. 11 detailing the events of the raid. The book’s publisher says Owen “was one of the first men through the door on the third floor of the terrorist leader’s hideout and was present at his death.”

Fox News said that “multiple sources” told the news outlet Owen’s real name but Fox did not provide any details about its decision to publish it. The book seemingly provides some clues as to the SEAL’s real identity as, according to the New York Times, Owen “recalls his childhood in Alaska.”

Defense Department, CIA and White House officials said they have not reviewed the content of Owen’s book and that they first heard of its existence from media reports. And as the Fox report publishing Owen’s name notes, he “could be exposing himself to legal trouble, as the Pentagon has not vetted the account“:

Lt. Cmdr. Chris Servello, a Navy spokesman, said it’s possible [Owen] or any former service member could be punished for revealing national security secrets. “Any service member who discloses classified or sensitive information could be subject to prosecution — this doesn’t end when you leave the service,” Servello said. “There is nothing unique to the special warfare community in this regard.”

Current and former SEALs criticized Owen for speaking out. “How do we tell our guys to stay quiet when this guy won’t?” one SEAL told Fox while others reportedly called Owen a “traitor.”

Mother Jones’s Adam Weinstein notes that Justin Fishel, the Fox News reporter who revealed Owen’s name, also reported last year that the SEALs who participated in the bin Laden raid wanted to protect their identities out of concern for their safety. “There has been a consistent and effective effort to protect the identity of those that participated in the raid and I think that that has to continue,” Fishel reported then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates saying at the time.

OK>>>>>i do not know if this is good news or bad news.  The SEAL name is Mark Owen....and the Al Qaeda has an all out bulletin for his life, dead or alive.   They have published his photo at all the Al Qaeda website. The book was published without the knowledge of the Pentagon.  This guy, this SEAL , has endangered not only his life but also the lives of those who are dedicated to their mission and service for this country. Either the book was motivated by money mainly....recognition.....or hatred for the President.  What ever had motivated this SEAL, it was morally wrong for him to jeopardize the security code of this nation. Maybe by this time as I am writing this, he is already in the hands of the Defense Department.

Too bad Bin Laden was dead for over ten years now, no one threw anyone over board, especially not the worlds greatest trophy! Only Fox News and the silly American majority believes such a story about a seal's name being revealed for something that never happened, the seals involved are just system puppets, nothing more. I can't believe anyone would believe this seal bull story, sad over half of Americans do, see the power of the system owned media, if you don't, just open your eyes.

No there is no proof he was dead for over ten years nor is there any proof that he was thrown over board, sorry, a seal puppet is not proof of anything real. Of course had the seals really of gotten him, we would have a body for real proof, but one can't pull proof out of a grave, thus throw it over board, really, you can believe this?

Ugh, please stop repeating this very debunked claim. Unless you can come up with some sort of proof or evidence to support it.

Amelia Earhart is dead ,no body found, also Hitler is dead but no body for verification of death, and D.B. Sweeny is dead. again no body. I think the ongoing rationale for not displaying the body of Osama Bin Laden was that it would be a direct and highly offensive act to all Moslems , and there would have been reprisals.

No one asked anyone to display anything, but if you are going to claim you did someone in who has been dead for over ten years, you better show the proof(body) to someone. Sure Amelia Earhart is dead, but no one knows for sure how she got that way, same with Bin Laden, sorry, a seal puppets word is proof of nothing as to how Bin Laden was killed. If the US wants to claim they killed Bin Laden, then they better have some "real" proof, or quit blowing smoke up the worlds ass.

My claim is not near as debunked as the one our government made up about getting Bin Laden with "zero" proof to back "their" debunked claim.

Even Snowden, enemy number one of government secrets, says Bin Laden was killed in 2011. That's right, even the man who is hiding from our government in Russia because he is tired of US secrets says this is true.

It's really weird that you think Bin Laden was killed 10 years ago when the is zero proof to back up that claim, then you claim that there was no way he was killed in 2011 because "there is no proof." Why do you favor one story over the other? Why must the '2011' story be false? Do you feel like every big thing has to have some government cover-up?

The government does some messed up stuff. They do a lot of it. And they need to be called out on it. But when people keep bringing up stuff that is completely debunked or wildly unverifiable, it makes everyone who criticizes the government look a little be less sane.

Actually who cares!! It does not matter at all.!! Guess what a trophy body of anyone has cost this country? The organization of Bin Laden which has gotten only larger because of our stupidity by going after one guy at a cost of billions certainly did not solve anything at all. Congratulations America, we are very busy to work ourselves even deeper into the "shit" on how we deal with unrest in this world.

Hate to say it, but does it really matter who revealed 'Owen's' identity? He's under investigation for releasing classified information and enticing other Seals to do the same. His name likely would have come out anyways. Fact is Owen probably fears Al Qaida less than he fears the US Government. He signed a contract saying he would not release classified information, which he went against. Part of being a SEAL is anonymity, which 'Owen' broke when he wrote the book and included details into his own pre-military past. If Fox News hadn't said his name, someone else would have. What are the chances one of his childhood friends wouldn't read the book and say, "Hey, I know who that is" and tell a reporter for his 15 minutes of fame?

Fact is the Seals who participated in the raid should be concerned for their safety, thanks to 'Owen' publishing his book, not because Fox News said who 'Owen' really is. Especially considering 'Owen' recruited 7 of them to release classified information to a video game company.

You want to protect your safety? Don't write a book about classified actions within a year of those actions.

As always, FOX News is about making $$$$ rather than reporting.

I'll be interested in hearing about how FOX News applauds itself for revealing the name of this soldier.

Fox News rarely admits a mistake. And they also rely on the short memories of their viewers. They have a niche audience, the biggest demographic being old white men, and they play to that group with racial innuendos. Otherwise, God, guns and gays...the three G's make them a lot of money. Facts don't matter...emotions do.

Playing to emotions is what they do very successfully to make tons of money for billionaire media mogul, Rupert Murdoch.

I wonder what ever happened to Sabrena05 (the OP of this thread)? She made many good observations and points but, also, is also long gone!
