What about those cuts to Medicare?

If you live in a swing state like Colorado, you have been inundated with political TV ads.  One of Romney's ads directed at seniors claims that President Obama is cutting $716 billion from Medicare to pay for ObamaCare. The actual words used to stir up fear by seniors:

"The Money You Paid For Guaranteed Healthcare”...“is going to a massive new government program that’s not for you."

In fact, the $716 billion in Obama's Medicare cuts spread over 10 years are focused on cutting fat and improving efficiency, something that both Republicans and Democrats have endorsed in the past.  None of Obama's cuts affect Medicare recipients.  Their benefits are untouched. They are mostly focused on the costs of private providers in the Medicare Advantage program and very little in Medicare Parts A and B.

And here's the kicker.  All those $716 billion in cost savings in Obama's plan are also contained in the Ryan budget, which was passed by the House in June before their recess.  And every Republican voted for it. So if Romney is criticizing Obama for shaving $716 billion in fat out of Medicare over 10 years then he is also criticizing his VP pick Paul Ryan and every Republican member of the House because those cost savings are the same in both Obama's plan and the Ryan plan (which is now the Republican House budget plan).

The Ryan plan goes one step further with their $6,000 voucher proposal to the under 55 demographic. That voucher is not indexed to inflation so rising medical costs will require those seniors to fork up more and more of the cost as they get older.

Ezra Klein of the Washington Post provides a fuller explanation in his August 14th article: Paul Ryan’s budget keeps Obama’s Medicare cuts. Full stop. Quoting Klein:

"Since the Romney campaign wants to run against President Obama’s cuts to Medicare, it’s something of a problem for them that Paul Ryan’s budget includes those very same cuts to Medicare. And so they’ve come up with a somewhat confused and confusing argument to distinguish the two plans."

You really need to read the article as there is no way I can paraphrase it without adding to the confusion.

This is preposterous! That's how R-Money rolls....both for and against something at the same time!

Obama should have gotten rid of Medicare Advantage and RAMPED UP funding for the rest of Medicare.

The problem with Obamacare is that it does not add enough to the deficit! :)

Schmidt - The Ad......"The Money You Paid For Guaranteed Healthcare”...“is going to a massive new government program that’s not for you." >>>>>IS A FLAT OUT LIE COMING FROM THE REPUBLICANS.
    Medicare under President Obama Plan:
According to Wendell Potter, and Jonathan Cohn of The New Republic, the $716 Billion cut from Medicare by President Obama went to:
A.) Increased the benefit on the Medicare by cutting the Drug/Prescription provider and let the senior choose to pick their own Prescription Provider
B.) Increased the benefit on the Medicare Without CoPay for Preventive Care  (Notice that before this cut was passed Seniors were paying $10.00 co-pay for preventive care but after this cut took effect, Seniors NO LONGER PAY for any Co-Pay when they go for their medical check up)

    Medicare under Romney-Ryan Plan:
A.)  The cut from Medicare goes to the wealthy
B.)  The cut will provide for the Voucher System in the amount of $6,400 a year for Medicare.

THESE ARE THE TRUTH AND THE DIFFERENCES OF THE TWO PLAN

Thank you Sabrina for the clarification and links.

I was looking for a breakdown of that $716 billion over 10 years but couldn't find it in my Googling.  The number was originally $500 billion, but somehow got inflated to $716 billion.

Yes certainly some of the money shaved out of mostly the fat in Medicare Advantage has been plowed back into the Medicare Part D prescription drug program and a portion to Medicare Part B preventive services that won't there before.  And the rest to and children and non-elderly Medicaid recipients starting in 2014.  The prescription drug and preventative care provisions within the Affordable Care Act enhance Medicare, but somehow that message hasn't gotten through yet even to the media pundits. I saw attempts at explaining it yesterday, but many of them fell short.

I found the New Republic article you referenced by Jonathan Cohn: Mitt Romney's Astoundingly Cynical Medicare Strategy. Here is an extract from Cohn's article with regard to a comparison of the Affordable Care Act versus the Ryan Plan:

"The most significant difference between the two sides, at least for the short- to medium-term, is how they handle the savings these cuts generate. Obamacare puts the money back into the pockets of people who need help with their medical bills. A portion of the money is earmarked for children and non-elderly Americans, who, starting in 2014, will become eligible for Medicaid or receive tax credits to offset the cost of private insurance. A smaller, but still significant, portion of the money is for seniors. It helps them pay for prescription drugs, by filling the "donut hole" in Medicare Par D coverage. It also eliminates out-of-pocket costs for annual wellness visits, some cancer screenings, and other preventative services. Those benefits have actually started already: In the first six months of this year, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, more than 16 million seniors took advantage of the free preventative care provision."

The Romney ad that the $716 billion is "going to a massive new government program that’s not for you," is indeed a lie because everyone benefits...either now or in the future when they become eligible for Medicare. The Republican plutocrats and their surrogates (the "not for you" folks) hate the Affordable Care Act, but if you were to quiz them on the details, you would find some of the dumbest people on this planet.

This is the battle...to educate people that don't want to be educated...that want to believe the false Romney ads, not only this one but the other related to welfare.  Both outright lies that people choose to believe. Perhaps Wendell Potter's statement needs to be put into a counter "fear ad" because those that choose to believe it are largely succumbing to fear:

"If we were to implement the Ryan plan, you could rest assured that many, many senior citizens would die who otherwise wouldn't have to, because of the fact that benefits would be reduced."

Schmidt -  And I thank you for pulling the link on Jonathan Cohn...I did not have the chance to pull the link for your easy access.  Thanks for doing that for us.  Jonathan Cohn and Wendell Potter was the two guest (together) at Ed Schultz Show yesterday, August 14, 2012.  I was listening intently to what they were saying and after the show, I went to Ed's website and pulled all the links to what was discussed on his show.  It was Jonathan who made Medicare crystal clear for me....which you see above.  The part where I mentioned the Romney-Ryan Plan (A) "cuts for the wealthy"  he explained it clearly but I was not fast enough writing down all the things he said.  I only was able to write down that Voucher Program System they (Romney-Ryan)  wanted to implement.  Wendel Potter second the motion.  I guess I am so in tuned with Medicare, because it concerns me most of all.  And to those people who are really at a lost on this issue, is indeed sad.  They do not really know what President Obama has done for us, the Seniors.  Bless his heart (the President) who really means well for all of us.  It is imminent with God's blessings, President Obama will be the man who God sees fit to be our President once again.  God Bless.

Jonathan Alter: ‘People will die’ if Obamacare is repealed

Jonathan Alter, MSNBC Political Analyst and Bloomberg View columnist, said last night on The Ed Show that "a lot of " Americans will die if Republicans repeal Obamacare, as they have vowed to do countless times (the GOP-controlled House has already done so 31 times!).

Wendell Potter: 'Many seniors would die' under Ryan's Medicare plan

"If we were to implement the Ryan plan, you could rest assured that many, many senior citizens would die who otherwise wouldn't have to," said former insurance executive Wendell Potter on Tuesday's The Ed Show. Stark language, but he had the math to back it up.under Ryan's Medicare plan

Bernie Sanders: Ryan's proposed Medicaid cuts would be a 'death sentence' for many Americans

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said on Monday's The Ed Show that cuts to Medicaid would mean a "death sentence for a whole lot of people all over this country."

WE should all thank the Ed Schultz Show for inviting all these guest on his show giving us the most important highlight of what is VERY important for us to REMEMBER

And that is an absolute fact.  The money seniors paid into medicare will be diverted to help pay for health care for those who haven't paid a cent.  If someone other than government does that, it's called theft.  The politicians of the Democratic party are turning their back on senior citizens.  I guess they figure that many of them don't have enough elections to make a difference left in their life span.

The fear mongering by the left is beyond shameful.  It shows complete desperation.

The American people are gradually but surely getting fed up with the left.  The Democratic party is sliding farther and farther to the left leaving the main stream behind.  Long time JFK / LBJ Democrats are even fed up with the hackishness of the current crop of MSNBC types..  Personally, I enjoy seeing this left wing crack-up.

Libertarians - just as bad, actually worse than Conservatives, and they are full of the same hate and venom. What happen to these people when they were growing up? It's a shame abortion wasn't more prevalent  then ;)

No "hate and venom" here.  Just facts.  I'm not a miserable hand wringing liberal.  I'm a freedom loving fun dude.

For some reason, the lefties always think truth and facts are "hate speech"  Never could figure that one out.  I guess it's because they hate the truth.
