    "Well, I'm not certain," said Reid. "But obviously he can't release those tax returns. How would it look?"
    Reid nor his office would reveal who the investor was, making it impossible to verify if the accusation is true
    Question?  Are there any doubts in the mind of the American 'YOU PEOPLE"  that this statement is true?
    Remember the game "TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES"? This was a game in College we love the most because we'd like to stick it to someone who'd tells lies and suffer the consequences.  At the start of the games, their are penalties drawn before the game start.
    If what is allege about Mitt not paying Taxes is true, and he denies it...what would you think the penalty will the "YOU PEOPLE" impose against Romney?  Can you think of any? if you do, expand your answer to include why such penalty is deserving of Mitt Romney.

    Not in your mind perhaps.  In the REAL world, where there are actual news reporting organizations there might be some doubts.

    The actual news reporting organizations require things like facts and evidence.

    You do not, apparently.

    But, go on thinking this is true, because you so desperately WANT it to be true.

    I don't know if it's true, however Mr. Romney's refusal to provide at leat 10 years of tax returns adds even more questions. I don't think Reid normally tosses around information
    like this so I think somewhere or sometime he has seen the tax returns or has a friend that works in the IRS who has given him the information.

    Agreed that Romney should release more returns but it's his decision.

    Maybe he thinks the info in the returns would be worse than not releasing them.

    Still, it was pretty stupid of Reid to say what he said without backing it up.

    When a person of his stature says something like this, he should provide a source. 

    This makes Reid look bad even by his own low standards.

    Maybe the source, and the truth will come out on this issue.

    Or, maybe there's nothing to it, just another manufactured issue to keep the focus off the economy.

    Sweetcake, if there is anyone who knows, it would be John McCain.  Mitt Romney applied to be VP to MCain and Mitt released 10 years of his Tax return for the vetting process. Honorable as McCain is, I doubt if he'd release any of that information....strictly confidential....Gentleman's Agreement.  Mitt Romney is playing games with the mind of the people, if there is any truth to the rumor, only McCain & Romney knows. I will not be surprise if Romney pick McCain as his VP.

    Almost half the people in the country do not pay income taxes. The top 10% pay 70% of the load.
    1) How is this fair ?

    I am new to this forum. But I challenge you all to read your own Forum Rules and advise as to why any free thinking American would want to be on this site. You actually have rules  to limit criticism regarding Democrats and to be supportive and positive towards them? But you say you do not have many rules on what you can post on conservatives ? Are you serious or is that a joke ? Welcome to the Echo Chamber ! (feels just like MSNBC) .  I recommend you read the rules and do the American thing. Goodbye.

    Is that "Good-bye" means you're not coming back to the site?  Please do...I'd like to hear your side of the story. This might be a website for the Democrats (like yourself) but that does not goes to say Conservatives (Democrats/Republicans) have no freedom to voice their minds on any subject.  We might differ with our views but that also does not goes to say we can not agree to disagree.  We might be of the same political affiliation but the distinction of Conservative, Liberal, Progressive is how we view the current "on goings" in our political outlook on things.  I already like the way you tag MSNBC as "Echo Chamber", why do you think so?  Do we really sound like  MSNBC?   To my prospective, I see MSNBC as a guide only within the perimeter of truth versus the false which we hear all over the place.  So tell me, how you differ from MSNBC and why do we sound like MSNBC to you.

    I have been researching this issue of anyone not paying taxes for some period of time.  One first has to define what "not paying taxes" actually means.  Does it mean one actually pays in (or has deducted) no federal or state taxes, either from payroll deductions, estimated tax payments, or submitted with one's final yearly return?  Or does it mean that regardless of what one pays in, or how it is paid, the full amount of all payments is returned as a refund after taxes are filed?  Both of these scenarios result in a zero net tax and a zero net tax rate, but in the second instance, the person could honestly say that he has "paid" taxes, even though he got them 100% refunded.  

    All this makes me wonder how this applies to Mitt.  Obviously Mitt doesn't want anyone to know how it applies, but it sure does look suspicious.  I looked at a specific web site regarding the payment of tax estimates :  http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=110413,00.html/  and was able to see that any individual who suspects that he receives enough untaxed income--like interest and dividends--so that he will owe $1,000 or more when he files his taxes, MUST file and pay ESTIMATED taxes during the tax year.  Surely Mitt would fall under this law, with his mega-millions in investments, so I cannot envision him not following the law and making these quarterly estimate payments.  However, IF he has really paid zero taxes, then it has most likely been as a result of him receiving 100% of his tax estimates as a refund.

    I do realize that there is one very small "other possibility".  With many investments there is the option to have federal taxes deducted from one's earnings.  So I can see where there might be an outside chance that Mitt has done this, but if the statement that he paid zero taxes over some period of time is true, then he just managed to get them all refunded after his tax filings.

    I hope this makes sense to you.

    Mitt Romney just need to do is show his Tax Return.  We all Pay taxes, but it is the deductibles that makes the difference whether we pay Uncle Sam what is due to Uncle Sam and if we have enough deductibles to offset what we're suppose to pay for taxes, then hey, the refund is indeed due to us.  What Mitt is fearful about is what are the deductibles he claims from his taxes.  That is open for scrutiny.  And how does his offshore investments affects his taxes here at home.  This is what is compounding the issue on Mitt's Tax return.
    I use to pay $15,000. every year to Uncle Sam.....and what got me in real trouble was, I have not paid the previous year and here comes another $15,000. for me to pay for the current year....and on and on....till I owe Uncle Sam 86,000.00 in back taxes.  All my investment was not enough to offset what I have to pay.  So I got wise and open up a business, that ease the burden of paying taxes.  The business got me in a position to just even out with Uncle Sam, I didn't need to pay any taxes.  Hey, this is all legal....Mitt most likely is fearful to show his tax return because of these reasons.  He should just let it out in the open and let the "YOU PEOPLE" decide his fate.  The only problem for him is, dodging taxes off of his offshore investment....that will not bode well to "YOU PEOPLE."  We all know how the tax system works....and if the Fed can just at least help in revising some tax code to reduce how much we need to pay....that'll be great.  But th Fed is for the RICH & THE WEALTHY leaving us poor people to sweat it out on our own.
    Now, here are the current issues....
    The House of Representatives made its election-year arguments Wednesday in the tax-cut battle roiling Capitol Hill, rejecting a plan to preserve middle-class breaks while backing a measure that safeguards wealthier taxpayers.
    Republicans countering that they were safeguarding small businesses and jobs.
    They want to give households that earn more than $1 million a year a tax cut –- on average –- of $160,000 next year."
    Democrats also argued that with the expiration of the 2009 cuts -- the child tax credit, a bigger earned income tax credit and a break on college tuition -- middle-class families would face on average a $1,000 tax hike.
    The Republican version, H.R. 8, passed 256 to 171, with 20 Democrats for it.
    Democrats also failed 181 to 246, to ad an amendment to the GOP bill that would exempt incomes above $1 million from the Bush cuts
    since the George W. Bush cuts were passed in 2001 and 2003, the income gap in America has grown.
    At this point in time.....I support the FISCAL CLIFF

    Thank you FandB- I also am new to this forum so I read the "rules" after seeing your comment. I am incredulous, and I must say that there are other even more egregious offenses included in the "rules" that you didn't even mention ! I am a Cambridge Ma. liberal and even I cannot conscience this farce. Breathtaking in its one- sided approach. But if the participants enjoy listening to comments under those rules, then you are correct- we are in an Echo Chamber.

    This is the statement that I have heard over and over and over and yes over again from the Repubs about the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy:  "Republicans countering that they were safeguarding small businesses and jobs".  However, each and every time I hear it, I want to say to Boehner or whoever that only a very puny number of small businesses earn over $1MM/yr., the wealthy are mostly investors (overseas especially) and all they do is count their money.  I also always want to ask them if these wealthy need the tax cuts to create businesses and jobs, where are these new businesses and jobs now, and where have they been for the past 4 years?  They ARE getting those tax cuts now, so the businesses and jobs should be there now as well.  But they are not and have not been for some time, way before these tax cuts are set to expire.  

    This makes me say that, as you say, bring on the fiscal cliff.....that is my almost sure bet to get the tax cuts for ONLY the bottom 98%.

    I am so glad he threw that out.  If he is going to be our prez we have a right to know about his moral character.  It certainly is starting to crumble.  How could he not declare either MA or UT as his permanent  home and then when running as guv he has to go back and amend his returns.  His hobby horse  allows him to deduct 70 grand.  Sadly this man has no core values.  Too bad his seeking office means he will not be audited since so much is coming out..
