Mr. Sharpton (i.e., Reverend Al) made the comment today "we's not stupid.  we's not ig'nant"

By those comments alone, Mr. Sharpton has shown HIMSELF to be ignorant and a poor representation of the African American community.  There IS no such word as "WE'S" and there IS no such word as "IG'NANT."

He turned a senseless shooting into a racial issue, and he should be ashamed of himself.  We ALL love our children, and we ALL would be devastated if something happened to them.  But, would ALL of us take to the streets if one of them was murdered??  Somehow, I doubt it.

And, if one of our children were to be senselessly murdered and was NOT African American, would the POTUS take notice of it in a national news conference?  Somehow, I doubt it.

When Rev. Sharpton, who I presume is educated enough to have EARNED the title of "Reverend" uses words that do not exist when representing the black community, he not only shows HIMSELF to be IGNORANT, but he gives the entire African American community a bad name.

So, I have this to say to Reverend Al:

When you come to MY home, Reverend, we use PROPER ENGLISH!  We do not speak Ebonics, I require my grandchildren to speak correctly and to use correct enunciation.  If you continue to use words that do not exist (except in your mind as an "oppressed black man,") you will be politely asked to LEAVE!!!

I believe the Rev. Al Sharpton to be a highly educated man. I would proudly welcome him into my home...ebonics and all! But to Gaylon, it is no more than fair that the President of the United States address this senseless killing. In case you haven't noticed, this is a young boy who had a life ahead of him and his short-lived life was interrupted by someone who targeted him without a cause...and whether you want to admit it or not..yes!! It was because he was a Black kid wearing a hoodie. Why and when will what Blacks wear stop dictating our character. First of all....many of your young white kids often try to imitate the Black culture. They are listening to loud rap music, driving around on 24" rims, etc. It is because "we" are one..you may want to get with the program! This was a hate crime and you know it. You should've read your STUPID comment before posting it...ridiculous. I'm not saying it never happens, but I will say rarely do you see Blacks with this kind of racial hatred. And the sad thing about it, you same people work with Blacks daily, smiling in our faces, and hating without a cause. But oh well, isn't that why Jesus was killed (by the white men)???? How dare a man of color (look at your map and study the region and tell me the color of skin. I didn't say Black, I said a man of color) say that He is the Son of God???? This kind of hatred started years before your time or mine or your great-great grandparents (who were a part of racism..may I add). It WAS the American way. Get over it!!! Hats off to the President. I believe if the President just so happened to be white, he/she would've felt the same was as our beloved President Obama. There are many whites who feel this is an unjust (the slaying of an innocent child). The color of his skin isn't the  issue, it is the way Blacks are perceived...muggers, robbers, rapists, etc. Truth be told, it's more prevalent in the white community but mostly publicized by the media if an crime involves a Black man. AND YOU KNOW IT!! Good thing is...now the WORLD knows it. There are so many whites that are standing up for equality. And as far as you leaving the Democratic part....See Ya! It's people like you we don't want anyway! I AM TRAYVON MARTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel as Americans we are all guilty of the senseless murder of Tayhvon. We were complacent and we allowed the NRA, Koch brothers and lobbyests to buy politicans in state and federal legislatures to pass the eased up gun laws, stand your ground and other laws in which innocent people can be murdered and if non witnessed, the murder can claim self defense. However I feel only the white person can get away with this, a minority cannot.

I feel that Tayhvon could be my grandson. No I'm not black I'm white but he reminds me of my four grandsons. He was guilty of nothing more, then buying candy and an ice tea. Zimmerman pursued him, and Tayhvon must have been terrified. Why didn't Tayhvon have any rights to stand his ground. If he was attacked by someone whom he did not know, a person not in authority, he had a right to fight back. He saw that gun, he knew his life was in danger and if he did fight for all that was in him, he had that right.

What kind of nation have we become, that we can kill others, when they aren't breaking into our homes or cars, attacking our children, attacking a police officer etc, in which there is a clear danger and evidence of the same. No we allowed the legislatures to pass these laws, and we did nothing to get the laws reversed did we?  We didn't speak out when there were sixty five murders in the past seven years did we? How many killings have there been in all the other states with stand your ground laws?  I tried to google this and can't find an answer.

We allowed legislatures and governors to pass and sign voter ID laws, and what are we doing to assist people who don't have a state ID to get one? Why aren't volunteer agencies being set up in each state, to assist people to get a certificate of live birth, marriage and divorce records etc. We need to get people to donate money to help people pay for these documents. In NJ I had to get a certicate of live birth, my first marriage certificate, my divorce papers, my second marriage certificate, all notorized, plus my lease and pay $24 and it's only good for four years. I can't get a notorized paper unless I have the state ID. I was turned down for charity care discount from a hospital here, because even though I am on Medicare I live on social security, and could not afford all the bills from having pneumonia and hosp twice. They told me my state ID had lapsed six weeks earlier. Well heck, I hadn't changed my name or address, so why should this matter?  How are we suppose to afford these charges?

I am angry that we have been so complacent, now mothers and grandmothers are having to have serious discussions with their children about how to dress and act, and what to say to the police. They can't say that you should go to the police if you are in danger, they have to say you are in danger of the police. How did we allow this to happen?

I lived through the sixties, in 1965 I was in Brooklyn, at Kings County Hosp. I remember molitoff cocktails being thrown against the wall of the nursing student dorm, of security guards with dogs patrolling the hallways, of being chased one time by a man with a machetti because my friend and I were white, and in the wrong area of Brooklyn. I can remember the black nursing students singing we will overcome, and not allowing the white nursing students in the tv room. I did not understand that at the time, I was a farm girl from upstate NY and knew nothing of the racial tensions. I just wanted to be friends with everyone.  I understand why the other nursing students felt the way they did, but also felt they didn't understand that not all white people were bad, that we supported them.  I do not want to go back to the sixties, I do not want another Rodney King. We can talk on social media, but I just don't think this is enough.

We have become complacent, we have not voted, we have not ensured we had progressive candidates or even moderate progressive ones. We have allowed America to be taken over, we have allowed the far right to scare people into laws that kill others. We elected govenors who pardon murders, and who sign laws that legalize murder.

Your post bothers me greatly, who are you to tell other people how to speak?  This is a racial issue whether you want to deny it or not. There were racial slurs on the 911 tapes. I happen to be 68 year old white grandma, who lives in NJ and have five grandsons. I grew up in the sixties and I have experience first hand what racial inequaltity and racism was. I find your post to be racist because you are alleduing to our President not speaking out if there was a senseless murder of a child. I am sure if another child, no matter if white, black, yellow or any other color he would have spoken out. If a white child was murdered by a black man, in the way Tayhvon was murdered there would be an outcry on Fox, Limbaugh and every other right wing media, radio or tv. However there would have been an outcry from the progressive media as well. You and I are the ones guilty for not speaking out sooner about sixty five murders in Fl. since 2005. You and I are the ones guilty of not speaking out when EMT's and firemen have been killed by homeowners since theses laws went into effect. So instead of belittling our President, or Rev Sharpton for the way he speaks, why don't you speak out against these laws? Do you have any idea how it must feel to send your child off to school not knowing if they will come home alive, or having to tell them how to dress and act, or not to trust the police?  Perhaps it's different in Texas where you come from, however I know that all your murders are put on death row, and find it ironic that it has not lowered the murder rate in Texas has it?  How would you treat a black man in Texas who shot a white child in a similar situation?  Would you arrest and ask questions later?  Or would you have him indicted and have the prosecutor go for the death penalty?  We are not asking for the death penalty, we are asking for justice. We are asking for Zimmerman to be indicted, and if nothing more to be charged with manslaughter.  This is a racial issue, now that's from the mouth of this white grandma.

Are you friggin kidding me! Colbert has the nerve to make fun of a young black man gunned down by an overzealous self appointed neighborhood watch moron. There is nothing funny about this cold blooded murder. Our Fla. law was meant for self protection not arbitrary murder. Zimmerman must be held responsible for this atrocity. By the way, I am a 62 year old white retired businessman military vet and biker. My comments are due to my sense of value to human life, regardless of race, color or religious preference. Someone give this Colbert guy a clue. This was my first and only viewing of this idiots show. How dare you ASSHOLE!!!

    Carlitos:

I agree with you that the thought process on this thread has wandered beyond what the REAL issue in Tryvon Martin's death.

The REAL issue is the power wielded by the American Legislative Executive Council, who wrote the wording for Florida's Stand Your Ground legislation, which was the main cause of his death.

The same group also wrote Arizona's SB 1070 (which some of the legislators are now trying to repeal).

Many of the legislators in most of our states have ties to ALEC. If you pardon the expression, Texas has a shitload, but so does Arizona:

The link above will allow you to view, by state, who the guilty parties are.

Tryvon's death really isn't about race at all, it's about the usurpation of power by groups that have no right to wield that power.

The fact of the matter is that only a handful of people know exactly what went on that night. It is possible that Zimmerman was attacked from behind, like he claims, and acted in self defense. If he fired one shot to protect himself, then I personally believe that Zimmerman was in the right. However, evidence should support his story. He went to the hospital to have his wounds treated, if the hospital report supports the claim that he was attacked from behind and then had his head slammed into the pavement then this guy may be taking a lot of heat for nothing.

However, if that is not the case, then there should be no evidence corroborating his claim. Additionally, from what I understand, there are a number of witnesses. I have learned, that in cases like these, you can't just rely on what the media shows. There will be parts of the truth of course, but every media outlet profits from sensationalizing the news. It does seem like there was error on the polices part but all my knowledge is second hand through the media.

What I find really hard to believe is that somebody got out of a car and murdered another human being in cold-blood just because he was black and wearing a hoody, that just doesn't add up. We have a legal system for a reason, we don't arrest people just because a mob wants us to. Let's trust that the police will get to the truth.

    Kelly:

I'm also Irish-American, and my daughter is named Kelly.

I've long been intolerant of intolerance, and my kids are carrying on that tradition. Both of my children have dated black people (as well a few foreign nationalities) and I'm perfectly fine with their dating choices.

The first phrase that came to mind when I read your posts was the clip below:

However, since I'm not a believer in name calling, I'm not going to demean you, or your comments. Having said that, however, Rick Perry is ALWAYS going to be "Governor Bonehead" in my book.

The best advice that I can give to you, though, is to read the article posted below, since it will provide you with an INTELLIGENT view of race relations:

on the treyvon martin investigation i want to say all the contamination going on please note the posted signs info on the property... were there cameras rolling?...if not sounds like the property owners could be in for lawsuit and who authorize zim to act in the manner and to be armed as he was and genrally if a person is suspicious you call the police not take the law into your own hand and no crime had been committed and zim did'nt identify himself to the dispatcher nor to martin uhhh that's bad...zimmerman's brother said zim had presence of mind and time to place his head off the concrete and place it on the grass sounds like a movie role as tho the other person would allow time for that uhhhhh

note the officers in video looking at back of zimmerman's head not looking at something as his lawyer has suggested looking at something vs looking at the back of his head could mean looking for something not that something is there

zimmerman racially profiled his anticipated target and treyvon was the ideal opportunity to gain noteriety and who appointed/trained/certified and authorize his carrying the fire arm????....what was that the officer put in the trunk of the vehicle and what did the officer wipe on his uniform and why such friendliness with a shooter of a child rather casual arrest and the phones had already been rolling to robert zimmerman and the good ol boys system zim's dad is desperate something to that effect ummm i wonder????
