Schumer calls for tougher regulation on stolen cell phones. New York ranks second, only behind Florida, as the state with the highest percentage of stolen cell phones. He wants big companies like AT&T and T-Mobile to follow suit with other companies such as Verizon and Sprint and not only deactivate the sim card but also the phone itself, once its reported stolen.

I would agree that tougher, well known and advertised regulation on the matter should help cut down on the problem dramatically. If its common knowledge that stealing a cellphone is pointless because you can't reactivate it, this should cut down on the problem big time. Agree? Or is there something technical that I'm not thinking of?
