Michelle Bachmann won the Iowa Straw Poll. Technically, that doesn't give her any rights to anything, but it does give her bragging rights and a lot of people take it seriously as a good gauge of who to elect for GOP nomination. Does this matter? Are we doomed to see a Bachmann/Obama 2012 duel?

As Rachel Maddow pointed out in her show, the Iowa Straw Poll is a racket designed to make money for the local party...a fund raiser.  Voting costs $30 per ballot and Michele Bachmann paid for 6,000 ballots ($180,000) but only got 4,823 votes out of those purchases.

The question  I have is: Why do the mainstream media take the Iowa straw poll so seriously, year after year, when it's nothing but a fund raising gimmick?
