I started this thread to focus on the radical views of Michele Bachmann that were heavy into her Christian identity and her crusade to transform government into a theocratic state. I don't worry so much about the Pope's edicts or Obama invoking the word "God" at the end of his speeches, or jurors saying grace. I do, however, worry about those elected officials that seek to put Biblical prophecies or scriptures into government policies. Michele Bachmann is just one of many...she catches the scorn of people like me, but oh, just take a look at how many we have voted into office that think just like her, but don't capture the headlines like Bachmann does. We the people elected her and people like her...maybe not directly, but by not participating in government and not voting on election day. We can say good riddance to Bachmann, but there are many standing in line to replace her...and they are passionate about their cause (crusade).

Schmidt, I've got the same feelings; you answered it all. The worst part of it is the total hypocracy related to biblical things etc.

you are correct re: bachmann. that such a mindless hack was elected to congress is astounding and underscores bird's theorem re: the electorate. for those who do not know bird's theorem it is this: "'we the people' are stupid."

one is so annoyed, disgusted, dismayed and angered at religionists it is astounding. but we must note that bachmann was at least partially correct. ALL days are the last days. every day we get closer to whenever humanity will cease to exist followed at some point by all life. that said point may be millions if not billions of years from now or it may be next year when some massive asteroid/comet/fill-in-the-blank collides with the planet. the problem with religionists is that they think the apocalypse of john is an actual prediction as opposed to written code for a period of time when rome was laying out persecution for a splintered jewish sect that paul said goyim could join.

Yes according to astrophysicists, all life on earth will cease to exist in some 2 to 3 billion years unless a meteor crashes into the earth and takes care of that act sooner. So we'll need to find another planet to destroy before then. In the Biblical world, however, time is all compressed. The earth was created just 6,000 years ago, and the End of Days are soon upon us...the rapture and the big battle to be at Armageddon. Biblical prophecies must be adhered to...nothing else matters.

Schmidt, how can you say such things? My dinosaur skeleton is made of plastic, so I'll stick to 6000 years and wait till a plastic crying human "baby" returns, or may be a plastic Mozes comes back to life. Wow what a world!!!

I do believe that Christianity helped form the U.S Govt, since most of the Founders were either Christians or Deists. And most of their high ideals were coming from that Faith. But when you get to the 21st century, & the neo-Christians like Michelle Bachmann are taking over, you can quickly see that their "ideals" are far different than the Founders. Michelle Bachmann is married to a man who makes tons of money "curing the Gay" -- which is a hoax, & a sham. He is a Swiss citizen so he can "launder" money from US banks, to Swiss Bank Accts, where people can "avoid paying taxes" --- a federal crime.

Michelle went to Oral Roberts University, (a well-known school for fundamentalist Christians). But the founder -- Oral Roberts -- used to get on TV and tell old people to mail him lots of money, -- & he would send them a "magic lotion" to relieve their pain & suffering from arthritis, etc.

It was a total SCAM, the lotion had no special power, it was just the same as Jergens or any other lotion. But Roberts "ripped off" thousands of sick elderly people, just to make HIMSELF tons of money. /// Typical of most right-wing evangelists, they have no conscience at all, when lying to their flock. I knew someone who DID BUY Oral Roberts "magic lotion" to give to his elderly & very sick mother.. She was so heart-broken, when this stuff turned out to be nothing better than handsoap. She broke down & cried, since now -- where do you turn, when even God's messenger has lied to you? Poor old soul...

NOW this is my most IMPORTANT POINT: If this lying crook, Oral Roberts, would cheat the govt, & even old sick ladies, out of their life savings, HOW HOLY COULD HE BE? --- And He made his members pay a "Tithe" - 10% of their pay. And then they can "buy" their way to Heaven. (Where does it say THAT in your BIBLE?) --- Answer: IT DOES NOT. --- (Just another fake preacher, like good old "Fake Falwell" -- Fleece-ing their Flock).

But if old fake Falwell & Oral Roberts each run a UNIVERSITY --- HOW "credible" are their Diplomas? How legitimate, & legally acceptable? People like our dear Michelle Bachmann, (& God only knows how many others), were "conned" to get this diploma (Hmmm --- or did they KNOW (wink) that they were just paying $$ for a piece of paper, that could "pass" for a higher education?} When in fact, they're just high school graduates. (Only the Shadow Knows...)

Eternal; I'm selling my new hair grow potion; it is only $29.95 for 2 ounces; it will also guarantee a place in heaven with a signed certificate by Jesus's uncle.

must disagree. deists are not christians by the orthodox definition of the word. as for their ideals you must look to locke before the bible. adams, iirc, was unitarian which again would fall not quite in the area of orthodoxy. the thought processes that led to the two founding documents were a product on the enlightenment and looking to locke as well as the ancient greeks. i have also said that the founders believed religion had a place in creating a moral citizenry but that religion had no place in government and vice versa. it is not the job of government to tell anyone the path, if there is one, to salvation or correct worship. nor is out the job of religion to demand that the creeds, dogma and traditions of a particular religion, denomination or sect be cast as law. yes, we know that many people have their belief structures as regards religion constituting the foundation of their political beliefs. i have no problem with that on its face. i do have a problem when it moves to demanding something be done because god told them to or worse "scripture" says to do so.

Lonely, your last statement is right on ( i have no problem with that on its face. i do have a problem when it moves to demanding something be done because god told them to or worse "scripture" says to do so.) The funny part of it is no "human" imaginary "god" thing ever talked to a human or told them what to do etc.
Like statements: "A nation under God" , God bless America", "God's will" "Jesus loves us" are pure laughable. Did anyone ask the "whatever" up there if "it" agrees with any of these statements and got a reply? Shaking my old head; stupidity reigns here.

    PGR,

Jesus loves you so much he's appointed AMC as your spiritual advisor. You sir have won the lottery. Your own personal guide, A navigator on your first class ticket to sit with the Big guy. You sir have found the Golden ticket to the choclate factory.
Damn, I'm sorry I always confuse Willy Wonka with God......but you get it. You've been chosen. Think of yourself as the John Smith of today.

You guys must be clairvoyant or something. I was just finishing my 3rd chocolate out of my Russell Stover's "Assorted Creams" -- just this minute. Well, it beats having to cook supper. (ha) Just a quickie thought about "religion" & "U.S. Government" -- being intermingled. The Founders did NOT want a Theocracy, and they did not advocate for one religion & "one only" -- but they did believe that Religion is the foundation of morals & principles of ethical behavior. We have now carried on this belief, so our currency is engraved IN GOD WE TRUST, and our Pledge of Allegiance says: "one nation under God," And when our US President is taking his Oath of Office, (with his hand on the Bible) -- he says "I swear to preserve, protect & defend the Constitution" --- so help me God."
(At his swearing in - - at this point, Abraham Lincoln "kissed" the Bible.) -- And 6 yrs ago, OUR President Obama used Abe Lincoln's Bible for taking his oath.

But they DID believe with all their heart, that religion is the Foundation of morals & principles & good decent behavior. All U.S. currency says "IN GOD WE TRUST" -- Hmmm -- Does that sound like they wanted NO religion involved with Govt? Most state capitol bldgs have some scripture engraved on their marble walls. I could probably write a whole book on this subject, but suffice it to say, Evidence is Overwhelming that the Founders DID want this to be a Christian nation. ONE NATION UNDER GOD, (but they would not dictate just one religion to be supreme). One time, Thomas Paine wrote a few phrases that indicated he was doubtful about the Bible, & all the Founders shunned him until his death. His body could not even be buried at a church. (If you read much of Paine, he was an extremely devout man).
P.S. Do you recall any US Presidents taking the Oath ouof Office, (with his hand on the Bible) & saying: "to defend the Constitution, So help me God."? It is the most common oath used in our times. (At his swearing in, at this point, Abraham Lincoln "kissed" the Bible.) & Prez Obama used Abe's Bible for his oath.

Our founders realized that they couldn't stop religion so they seperated it...people were a lot crazier then...but not by much

Imagine what they say their neighbors do in the name of the spooky guy in the sky

Eternal, Don't you yourself find all these things kind of weird; putting your hand on a bible, which is full of lies; and kissing a stack of paper/leather full with germs and "trusting" an never seen or met entity. Also "one" nation under "god"; wow; if such "entity" is way up in the blue sky; it won't even see 'borders" only a tiny blue-isch marble; probably does not even know what "nation" means etc. So "help me "god", wow, sure "it" will come down in a second to help with human created stupidity; certainly "it" will help poor little kids, cancer patients, Ebola victims, drone and bomb victims etc. Pls go and ask this "whatever" in the sky. A total "ridiculous" nation ( under a never met or seen human created "god"); may "it" knows that word.
