Corporal Punishment in Schools

    I was watching an interesting lecture by Sam Harris in which he briefly brings up the topic of corporal punishment in schools. He states that allowing it to occur is clearly a relic of religion (spare the rod and spoil the child type of thing) and is not in the best interest of society.

    It made me think about corporal punishment as a whole. Is it a product of religion?

    If so, could corporal punishment in schools be considered a violation of separation of church and state?
