    Thanks Arizona --

It's a good historical account of the NRA.  They were once a moderate group until they became just another political mouthpiece for the far right.  The oft repeated lie that "Obama is going to take your guns away" seems to have been accepted by many in the NRA with little regard for the truth.  Follow the money...

one of my conservative friends ( I DO have a few) posted the link below just this morning on Facebook .. you can read the whole thing if you wish, but the short version is that the Australian government took away everyone's guns, and the crime rate skyrocketed ..

it's very reminiscent of recent "cherry picked" NRA claims that show that increased gun sales in parts of Virgina or California led to a decrease in crime ..

since I learned a long time ago NOT to trust conservative sources, I did some research on the topic, and found that snopes
had labeled it "a mixture of true and false information" in 2001:

to paraphrase the closing sentence a little, "be one of the vocal minority who WON'T stand for nonsense SPOUTED BY THE NRA"

    Australian Gun Law Update

Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts....
From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia

Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real
    figures from Down Under.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to
surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own
government, a program costing Australia taxpayers
    more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
    Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

    In the state of Victoria.....
lone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that
while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not
and criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady
decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins andassaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.

Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public
safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.

The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the
hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note Americans, before it's too late!
Will you be one of the sheep to turn yours in?
    WHY? You will need it.

This morning's New York Times had an interesting story about the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police:

To raise money, the association has decided to raffle off a total of 31 guns. Two of the guns being raffled, the Ruger SR-556C and
a Sig Sauer P226, are exactly the same guns that Adam Lanza used in Newtown. Although the drawing isn't scheduled to start until
May, all 1000 tickets have been sold.

Hopefully, there is still time to reverse this absolute violation of common sense.

    On a related note:

Chief lunatic Wayne LaPierre publicly made a statement last week that the right to bear arms is a "God-given right:

He also is of the opinion that pretty much anyone who wants to own a gun should own one. If, for some reason, you think that makes sense,
the attached video may change your mind:

"guy" I sure like all your research; anyway this shows that this country looks more than a "nut house" than an intelligent well run country.
Sorry to say all these pieces together show that common sense etc. is something which no longer exists here. Anyway my prediction is that regardless of any gun control no one is going to stop the killing here, if there are so many guns (over 300 million!) in the hands of millions of these fanatics, then the over 10,000 killings per year will at least double the coming years. I sure pity all the victims.
We are already the laughing stock of the rest of the civilised world as I saw on the European news.
