New Mexico just held an event called the Albuquerque Guns to Gardens.

People who turned in their guns received a gift certificate for $250 - and hundreds of guns were turned in. The guns will be melted down and turned into gardening tools.

Swords to ploughshares (or plowshares) is a concept in which military weapons or technologies are converted for peaceful civilian applications.

The phrase originates from the Book of Isaiah:

Many peoples shall come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. –

    — Isaiah 2:3–4

The ploughshare (Hebrew: אֵת ’êṯ, also translated coulter) is often used to symbolize creative tools that benefit humankind, as opposed to destructive tools of war, symbolized by the sword (Hebrew: חֶרֶב ḥereḇ), a similar sharp metal tool with an arguably opposite use.

In addition to the original Biblical Messianic intent, the expression "beat swords into ploughshares" has been used by disparate social and political groups.

An ongoing example as of 2013 is the dismantling of nuclear weapons and the use of their contents as fuel in civilian electric power stations, the Megatons to Megawatts Program. Nuclear fission development, originally accelerated for World War II weapons needs, has been applied to many civilian purposes since its use at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, including electricity and radiopharmaceutical production.

New Zealand officials collected about 56,000 firearms as part of a sixth-month gun buyback program that ended Friday, according to a news release from the country’s Minister of Police.

The New Zealand government instituted the program after 51 people were fatally shot at two Islamic houses of worship in March. The man accused in the shooting, Australian citizen Brenton Tarrant, 28, has pleaded not guilty to 92 charges, including 51 counts of murder.

New Zealand’s parliament voted almost unanimously in April in favor of changing the country’s gun laws and banning all military-style semi-automatic weapons.

About 33,000 people took part in the program, which required gun owners to hand over newly prohibited weapons. In addition to the 56,250 firearms collected, officials expect to buyback another 1,600 once validated. Another 2,700 were modified to be lawful firearms.

“Police also confirm they can account for 15,037 E-category firearms or military style semi-automatics held by 5,060 people, slightly higher than original estimates,” according to the release. Most of those guns have been handed in but some are being held by people who are seeking exemptions. This group includes collectors and gun dealers.

More than 194,000 prohibited parts, like magazines that can hold more than 10 cartridges and pistol grips, were turned over. According to Nash, the numbers are preliminary numbers and will be updated in January.

The buyback cost New Zealand about $102.2 million in payments to gun owners, officials said in the release.

A report by the Swiss-based Small Arms Survey estimated there are 1.2 million civilian owned firearms in New Zealand as of 2017, about 26 per every 100 citizens.

Canada also just announced a mandatory gun gun buy back program.

Although it would make sense to have a similar program here, it won't happen for quite a while. However, it appears that the Senate is on the verge of passing a bi-partisan gun control law, so at least SOME progress is being made.

Peanuts! There are here more "guns" than people. Since the government is "chicken" and does not "ban" lethal meat grinding AR15 type guns which only belong in an war zone and can't be used for hunting, and because it takes way too long to make decent laws, then in the meantime these type of "guns" are sold out.

As long as no one has the guts here and re-write the Second Amendment ( however reading it "right" it says only "militia" can have these ; not civilians) so it does makes sense for these times; if not, forget decent "gun" laws. All these killing tools are already in the hands of people and 18 year old kids with loads of ammunition.

Related it its outdated laws of 1776, this must be the most stupid country on earth. It shows such daily.

Buy back programs are an joke; there will even after any such event, then still more guns than people are around; don't forget the idiots here who "hoard" these things as well.

As long as this country does not do something drastic, then every "kid" and "crook" can own "guns" as many as they like.

Background checks don't work either, because all the guns are already owned by all kinds of idiots here; more guns than"people".

Don't forget that in these times, that the number of "mental" patients increased substantial and may own plenty of guns.

Even in this government we've got plenty of "mental" idiots as well in the "church" so be aware of that.

Of the "number of guns" handed in at any such event as you describe; then may be you can make may be 10 "plowshares" out of it (which farmers don't use anymore) and likely less because half the gun may be plastic or carbon filament; so absolutely no return on investment or recycle benefits. So stop the "Bible" B.S. please. It is neither 10 B.C or A.D., but 2022.

Neither is this New Zealand or Canada, but only this country is in "la la land" today.

These programs, gun buy backs, are about total bullshit, they're meaningless, the guns turned in are not the ones which need to be turned in, how about that. Most are probably non-operational, they're probably rusted pieces of junk.

If people want gun control, rewrite the constitution and do away with the second amendment or amend the worthless piece of paper it's written on.

Dock see my "proza". I only can say that this has become an "brainless country" ; "more guns than people says enough.

I absolutely can't understand the "mentality" here; how many innocent people here get shot each year by these "war" tools?

None of what is proposed will do anything at all; is there no shame? They are scared to give the Ukraine the weapons they need, but here everyone has more weapons than the civilians in the Ukraine.

Sorry this country has become an total joke.
