My assessment is was a disorganized coup attempt by mostly of fringe paramilitary crazies who probably have been fuckups their entire lives. Come-on now, just look at who they deem as their Supreme leader of their movement to over throw the government: Donald Trump.
If it weren't real, it would be a comical story line to a movie or book:
A bunch of losers, fuckups, and mentally unstable people decided to storm the capitol truly believing the perfect moment has arrived to over throw the most powerful govement in the world. The man who inspires them is a narcissistic sociopath pathological liar that does not give a shit about anyone of them, or anyone else on the planet, and just wants to save his own ass and stay in power.
With Donald Trump at the top the coup it was doomed to fail as it did. Throughout his entire life everything Trump touches become worses, and then even worse. Trump inspires crazy people to be more crazy (ie Rudy Giuliani, Michael Flynn, Roger Stone, etc). He does not inspire hardcore terrorists with very serious and devastating plans. What we saw was a coup attempt by the gang-who-couldn't-shoot-straight.
One big take away, if it had been an event on par with 911, it would have been far far worse, far far better planned and executed. Real hardcore American based terrorists would have stormed the capitol with automatic weapons, been inside senate chamber before any congressmen had a chance to escape, detonated several bombs in key locations, and made sure that they killed all political leaders they could track down in congress so that it would not be possible to ratify the electoral votes.... Something like that would have happened if it were planned and executed by professional American terrorists that are serious like those who were involved in 911. I think we got lucky, this time. Next time it won't be a bunch of fuckups led by Trump.
However, Donald Trump has been a slow rolling 911 event for the past 4 years, and just as deadly. Donald Trump harms and kills through an endless series of mostly paper cuts, one after another after another. Its akin to bleeding to death one drop of blood at a time.
Well, maybe they were a mostly disorganized bunch of rag tag people, but they proved the capital could be breached, and it sent shockwaves to lawmakers and their aides scrambling for cover in fear for their lives. I don't know what that's like, but I can just imagine being scared out of your wits wondering if help was coming to rescue me or not?
With the inauguration just days away, I would be screening people who are national guard members and even people associated with law enforcement agencies. I would be very fearful of what could happen next. Some of the people who were involved in that riot were ex-military members, something to be fearful of because ex military people know something about government procedures and actions, and can be used against peace-keeping forces. With all the military type attire available, an ordinary citizen can dress in military garb and blend in with guard troops. Troubling, to say the least.
According to one estimate, there are some three hundred different militia groups, with perhaps as many as fifteen thousand to twenty-thousand well-armed and often military-trained members, active in every state of the union.

If I were the designers of the inauguration stage, I would make sure that the part which faces the mall have bullet proof glass so that anyone who might try to snipe a shot at someone on stage will not penetrate to injure or kill.
I also wouldn't allow people to assemble in the mall either.
