I understand why Congress had to add an additional $600 a week to unemployment benefits.
The $1200 check that most of us got was not enough to spur much spending, since all it really covered was the equivalent of one month's rent for most people.
Since I work as a substitute teacher, I'm also losing a ton of money due to the fact that schools are closed for the rest of the school year. As a result, I applied for (and was approved for) unemployment compensation. I received my first deposit into my card last Tuesday, and it was for $840. Since I would normally gross $500 a week if I were still working as a sub, I understand why people are not anxious to return to work.
Arizona's maximum benefit is $240 a week, which is not enough to even cover bare necessities. The additional $600 a week will allow people to start spending again. In my case, I think that I'll splurge for a bottle of Grey Goose sometime this coming week.
