Jared may be right; however hard times are at the horizon due to the naive way this country is run. The "system" is the cause of that things will go awfully wrong, because no one dares to correct its faults in it.
Sorry people the Constitution is like having an antique millstone around your neck. Either update it, or replace it is the only solution. Make it an "detailed" up to date "living" document; scrap the "case law" system. Design an mandatory "operating manual" for Presidents and other top positions in the government. Revamp the election "system" where only votes counts, without "money" and "tricks" and donations of all kinds.
But yeah as some members said; this never will happen because all the zillion "crooks" here would loose their influence peddling "jobs" and "ripped of" money.
Thus just "muddle on" and await the next disaster and keep electing "mafia" types. Jesus, will be proud of this country and certainly will donate 100 trillion dollars via his bank account on Mars! Thus keep praying for that.
Yes, very hard times are on the horizon. How we handle them will determine the trajectory of our country for years to come. I have no doubt about that.
I share many of your concerns about the Constitution and religious right, but the best Constitution in the world and a truly secular state wouldn't prevent pandemics from happening. Pandemics have happened throughout the millennia and will happen for millennia to come.
How we handle pandemics is the only thing we can control. When it comes to that, I actually have some hope. Science, not Jesus, will put this virus in its place.
How many people die before that is really up to each of us. Extreme social distancing is pretty much the only thing we can do for the time being. As Tom Hanks said, "Sheltering in place works like this: You don't give it to anyone — You don't get it from anyone. Common sense, no?"
