I would assume that the Vatican would be the safest country in the world, since it has over 15,000 police per 100,000 population. However, since the country only has 1000 people, that ratio is a bit distorted.
According to the World Atlas, the generally accepted police to civilian ratio is 1:450 or approximately 225 police officers for every 100,000 people, so we are actually above that.
If you remember Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign, he promised to put another 100,000 officers on the street. Although it IS true that adding more officers would make it safer, the BEST way to make us safer is to pass much more comprehensive gun laws.
Schools across New York began the academic year with a new tool intended to prevent student suicides and violence: the ability to ask a court to remove a troubled person's access to firearms. New York is the first to empower schools to petition a court themselves for such an order, rather than go through local law enforcement.
Naturally, the GOP is horrified, but it is a hell of good way to reduce school shootings.
