Shortly after Trump came back from France last year (where he witnessed a Bastille Day parade) he wanted one of his one.
The initial cost estimate for the Veterans Day parade was $12 million, but the final cost estimate was $80 million higher! As a result, the military killed the parade, stating that "there are better ways to spend the funds to help active duty and veterans alike."
In another example of "you just can't fix stupid", Trump is now asking for military tanks on the Mall as part of his grandiose July 4 event this year. Officials are scrambling to finalize plans for the “Salute to America” celebration, which will also include jet flyovers, fireworks and a VIP section for the president’s speech at the Lincoln Memorial.
The VIP seats are for friends, family and members of the military. Those tickets come at no cost, but the White House did not say how it would specifically be allocated. The White House added that the entire event is free for the general public with no ticket requirement.
The Washington Post recently reported that the District of Columbia was forced to dip into its Emergency Planning and Security fund to cover the security costs for the President's July Fourth address, because the federal government has been lacking in funds due to its $7 million in debt for the 2017 inauguration.
Washington, DC, mayor Muriel Bowser opposed Trump's changes to the July Fourth celebration format in an interview with the Post in May, telling the newspaper she prefers it remain the way it has been in years past.
