The judge who retired was Anthony Kennedy. When he retired in July of 2018, he was replaced on the Supreme Court by his former law clerk, Brett Kavanagh. Kennedy was considered a "swing vote" on the Supreme Court, but many of his important votes were on the liberal side - Kennedy wrote in part the majority opinions in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. He is also known for his majority opinions in four gay rights cases: Romer v. Evans, Lawrence v. Texas, United States v. Windsor, and Obergefell v. Hodges.
However, he also went with the majority on the Citizens United case, which opened up a can of worms on campaign financing.

Kennedy's son Justin worked for a while at Goldman Sachs, and then moved on to Deutsche Bank, where he worked from 1997 to 2009. He ultimately became head of its real estate capital markets. In that position, he worked closely with Trump when he was a real estate developer.
Trump "schmoozed" Kennedy into retirement by assuring him that his legacy would be protected. As a result, Trump ultimately nominated TWO of his former law clerks to the Supreme Court, and Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanagh both got confirmed. Some of his former law clerks ultimately wound up on lower court positions as well.

With the help of Mitch McConnell, Trump appointed four times as many federal appeals judges as Obama in his first year in office.

In terms of assets, Deutsch Bank is the 15th largest bank in the world. In New York, the bank had installed computer programs that could automatically detect suspected money laundering. Before AND AFTER Trump president, the bank detected suspicious activity involving both him and Jared Kushner. When activity is detected, it is referred to human eyes, who further analyze if to determine if it should be added to an SAR (suspicious activity report), at which point it is referred to the Treasury Department. The Trump administration forced the bank to bury the suspicious activity, and it never got reported to the Treasury Department.
THAT is one of the reasons that Trump is so nervous about having his financial data subpoenaed.
