I know we've talked about this guy before, but I couldn't pull him up.

However, I'm really starting to like the guy, and the article below explains why he may actually be a viable candidate:

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/21/politics/pete-buttigieg-2020-campaign/index.html

Earlier this afternoon, I watched him in a video expressing condolences to the French people - in flawless French. French happens to be one of the SEVEN language that he speaks.

    https://www.newsweek.com/pete-buttigieg-notre-dame-cathedral-speaking-french-notre-dame-fire-gerard-1397610

    Hmm...

    Let's add this up.

    1) He is a graduate of Harvard and Oxford (which he attended on a Rhodes scholarship)

    2) He spend three years working for McKinsey and Company

    3) He attained the rank of lieutenant while serving as in intelligence officer for the Navy in Afghanistan

    4) He has been mayor of South Bend since 2011, and was re-elected in 2015

    5) His official platform makes a lot of sense:

His platform includes support for universal healthcare, reducing income inequality, pro-environmental policies, dialogue and cooperation between the Democratic Party and organized labor, universal background checks for firearms purchases, federal legislation that would ban job discrimination against LGBT people, and preserving the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program for children of immigrants. Buttigieg also supports overturning Citizens United and ending gerrymandering

    6) He was valedictorian of his senior class in South Bend the same year that he won the JFK Profiles in Courage Essay contest.

    7) When he was at Harvard, he was president of the Harvard Institute of Politics Student Advisory Committee and worked on the Institute's annual study of youth attitudes on politics

    8) His mother was a professor at Notre Dame for 29 years

    9) He is a devout Christian. Although he was baptized as a Catholic, he later became an Episcopalian.

    10) In addition to French, he is also conversant in Spanish, Italian, Maltese, Farsi, and Norwegian.

The difference between Mayor Pete and Trump is stark, in part because Trump can't even talk in complete sentences in English.

Some neanderthal in the Republican Party is sure to bring up the fact that he is in a gay marriage, but the world has LOTS of positions in power who are gay. Three of them are at the very top of their government. The United States has two governors are gay, and one senator (Kyrsten Sinema) who is openly bi-sexual.

" With the wind at their backs, Trump's campaign is counting on the Democratic Party to be in disarray after a long and hard-fought primary season. A senior Trump Campaign staffer even went as far to say, "we expect them to be bruised, battered, and broke," after the primary."

We shouldn't be shopping. Bernie defines the solution. We need his influence.

Arizona -- Yes I agree with you on "Mayor Pete". Every time I have seen him speak, he comes across as articulate, intelligent and conversant on the issues, but most of all he is authentic. He has thought about the issues, but thus far has not presented any specific proposals like Bernie or Elizabeth has. I am watching him and will be inclined to make him my Number one choice after I hear more of where he stands on the issues and how he can accomplish anything with a divided Congress.

I would love to see him on the debate stage with Trump, the anti-everything thug.

Schmidt, Trump the president will make a mockery out of the debates. He will find a way to smear Pete in a way to build his base. There is no logic in dealing with Trump. His only downfall might be the collapse of his artificially inflated economy.

Trump will make a mockery of any debate he is a part of and will do exactly what he did with all the Republican contenders in 2016 as well as Hillary Clinton. So Pete Buttigieg, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and others will all feel the Trump vitriol during the Democratic debates and then it will be all out mud slinging in the presidential debates. No candidate will be immune from it.

However, I expect Pete Buttigieg (if he is the nominee) to hold his own. He is highly mild mannered, articulate and intelligent, and it will be a wonderful contrast to the outrageous mumbling Trump. Trump's act will wear thin.

Well, look what he did in 2016 when he didn't have a chance to win. Now some odds are giving him the edge . like I said all through 16 Trump can't be beat by anti campaigning. His act builds support. Don't forget that the polls were wrong because some people lied because they were embarrassed to say they supported Trump. I guarantee the same now because his tax cut won over some anti Trump voters.

Schmidt/Chet . Yes he's an nice guy and at least he studied. But that is exactly the problem. How are you going to fight someone who never studied or knows anything about the world, let alone knows the difference between facts and fiction as well lies a million times, with a straight face, as well is an racist, corrupt, anti social, has no manners or integrity, and flunked school ( Daddy bought the certificate) as well had an "bone spur" in his foot so he escaped the Vietnam war.

So how can you as an decent well educated person fight an "imbecile"?

Sorry "folks" "neat" and "clean" won't work for getting rid of the "mafia"; only "handcuffs" and a "cell" may work.

Yeah, try to find something that Trump wants that is not rooted\motivated in destroying or hating something else. At best, maybe himself, but even his self-motivation often comes from picking fights and creating enemies. Trump is all in, or nothing, and always double down on all bets.

Anyways, Pete comes across as a guy that a broad section of voters can get behind. I believe NP's assessment is correct, for democrats to win it will be convincing both swing Democratic swing voters and Republican swing voters. HC lost some democratic swing voters, and nearly all Republican swing voters, in 2016.

Having an extreme strategy only works for Republicans because that is how Trump Republicans voters think\feel about THEIR issues, but extremism does not work for majority of the Democrats voters, and IMO, Democrats will never beat Trump Republicans at their own game. If I were an Republican strategists, I would want Trump to face off with the most extremist and militant Democrat candidate because Trump would beat a Radical Democrat: a democratic version of dt, someone who lies, willing to break the law, blame others, etc, etc. Trump would clean house in all 50 states if the Democrats were to nominate someone just like him to be the Democratic candidate.

The worst Republican fears is that Democrats nominate someone that stable, intelligent, moderate, and likable such as Pete. Democrats want to find the next Barack Obama, not a democratic version of Trump.

wwjd -- You nailed it. When we engage in gutter politics, Trump wins. He is the master of the game of mud slinging. The more mud slinging that goes on the more people are turned off.

Mayor Pete could be a winner if he makes it past the primaries. On the other hand, some of the Bernie supporters are cult like in their support for him. The convention will be tough.

My fear is that Bernie grabs all the far left votes and the moderates split up all the rest leaving Bernie with the plurality going into the convention. If Bernie is not the ultimate nominee after several rounds of voting in the convention, they will do what they did in 2016: vote for Trump rather than a hated establishment Democrat (although Mayor Pete is hardly establishment).

The "Our Revolution" crowd hated the Democratic "establishment" in 2016, and it appears now again in 2020. I haven't heard them say anything different. Kind of like a Trump rally...Bernie, Bernie, Bernie!!!

    My opinion...

With all the problems is this the candidate???

"Pete Buttigieg has everything except positions on major issues"

Pete who? I'm still trying to figure out how pronounce his last name. Trump will probably come up with some butt jokes during the campaign.

Of course an tele-evangelist attacked Pete, because he said; "God has no political parties" The evangelist of course pointed to the "human" written "bible" that "gays" should not "marry" etc. I guess the "evangelist" forgot that Jesus was "gay" running around with 12 guys. Wow. According to the human written "bible" Jesus was not married as well did not have an girlfriend even when he was in his 30's. Let alone having children. So what is the problem? Playing the hypocrite? But yeah Jesus came from Mars as a little baby in diapers made of Marsian straw via an Marsian spaceship and by accident it landed in an bunch of sheep in Israel. (Why there?, was the GPS broken?, it should have landed in Rome right in the middle of the Vatican) So up on Mars, of course they have no clue about "women" or "man" or "reproduction" or how that all works, let alone have a church or an green Trump like monster with one eye. Amen

FOX just hosted a live event with Mayor Pete - and he got a standing ovation:

    Trump is pissed.

VP would be an insane promotion (supposition). Mayor to VP with the candidate being well over 75. I imagine one third of the country is silently thinking if I voted for him.... He wouldn't have a heart attack or stroke in the first 3 years. I think many are appropriately considering somebody other than Joe or Bernie.

Most likely Biden gets the nod. Because little changes. The final 4 choices (for VP) will be interesting.

Perhaps in a decade Mayor Pete is in Biden's shoes but still under 50.

As the Washington Post pointed out this morning, Mayor Pete is a very effective communicator.
