Arguably, the greatest threat to our national security is Donald Trump, but the threats are actually a lot more complicated than that.

In January, the Government Accountability Office asked four government agencies on what they saw as the greatest threat to our national security. The agencies came up with 26 items. NONE of them included illegal immigrants coming from Mexico.

There are several references to cyber security. If you'd like a detailed look at exactly how a handful of determined people could literally bring our country to its knees, read Larry Bond's 2009 novel, "The Enemy within".

A little known fact is that the FY 2019 budget actually allocates $15 billion for cyber-related activities. Of that amount, the Department of Defense contributes $8.5 billion.

In terms of border security, we already spend a LOT of money there. Since 1986, our government has spent $263 billion on immigration enforcement. Our budget for the Border Patrol is now in excess of $4 billion a year. If you add in Customs and ICE, the total is now more than $20 billion a year. Anyone who thinks that we have "wide open borders'" is out of their f****ing mind.

Arizona, looking at the situation here, it is impossible to point to one threat alone; it is an combination of a lot of things which ruins countries. Because of the complexity of modern life then if you loose "oversight" things go AWOL.

Since it is not only the US facing "chaos" it is like an"decease" which spreads. Especially if half of this country is "uneducated" and sticks to an leader who is also uneducated and is an con-man. The result is obvious.

Lots of people here have the strange notion that an President is "holy" and "un-touchable" which helps to make things even worse. The combination of all the "wrongs" (if not corrected), brings any country on its knees.

I'm convinced that if this craziness continues, then even a Mueller won't be able to stop it, if the Trump supporters stick to him as glue; the Constitution never foresaw such. Thus there never will be enough "votes" to remove the con-man as well the "corruption" around him.

Yes there are many more things than 26 subjects which is ruining this country. What about it's outdated laws? No stringent laws related to the limits of Presidents? Walking away from international agreements etc.? Free trade? "I believe Putin"? I love Kim? Saudia did never kill anyone? etc etc.

Washington Post, August 8, 2016: Former GOP national security officials: Trump would be ‘most reckless’ American president in history

Look at the date of the article -- three months before the November 2016 election. A couple of extracts:

"A group of 50 former national security officials, all of whom have served Republican presidents from Richard M. Nixon to George W. Bush, have signed an open letter calling Donald Trump unqualified to be president and warning that, if elected, “he would be the most reckless President in American history.”

"The letter offers a withering critique of the GOP nominee, saying he “lacks the character, values and experience” to be president. The signatories declare their conviction that he would be dangerous “and would put at risk our country’s national security and well-being.”"

The letter didn't seem to have it's intended effect, but in hindsight it sure is pointing out how accurately these former officials had pegged Trump for the security risk that he is.

Yes, but in 2020 they (the GOP) will do it all over again; nothing is learned and the corruption continuous since it is totally "baked" in. Certainly there will be no "new" laws to curb the "powers" of Presidents ("it is "god's will); thus la la land stays for a while yet, until the "bottom" falls out. It should be by now be very clear that the "antique car" needs an drastic overhaul.

Talking about "national security" the real threat has become Russia; Putin warned in an speech, that the US should not install new missiles in Europe. He warned that Russia, because of that the US walked away from the "nuclear/missile" agreement, that he will install the new "hypersonic" missiles everywhere including submarines. Right now the Russians have the advantage of these new missiles which can reach targets in "minutes" . Due to the stupidity of Trump we are reaching an new "cold" war which is heating up.

Thus it is not the refugee's at the border, but the Russians who are an bigger threat.

    Schmidt:

You are exactly correct. The problem, though, is that not enough people read newspapers. Virtually every major newspaper in the country (including the Arizona Republic) has printed editorials stating that Trump was not fit for office. In the case of the Republic, it was the first time in the paper's history that it had not endorsed a Republican for president. Since Trump is actually a cult leader, the paper received several death threats for their article.

Far too many people watch FOX and listen to talk radio. Over the weekend, Trump admitted that he relies on "information" from Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, and Alex Jones was a presenter at one of his earlier rallies.
