The smirking teen seen mocking a Native American Vietnam vet in D.C. the other day has been identified as Nick Sandmann, a junior at Covington Catholic high school. The man he was confronting was Nathan Phillips, a recent widower, and an elder in his community.
As always, there are conflicting stories about what happened.
Sandmann and his fellow students were there for the "March for Life" rally, and Phillips was there for the Indigenous Peoples March.
Sandmann and his group are saying that some blacks in a group called the Hebrew Israelites were harassing them because they were wearing MAGA hats. Sandmann told CNN that he was trying to defuse the altercation between his group and the Hebrew Israelites.
According to Phillips, however, he sensed that the situation was getting out of control, so he started beating on his drum and chanting a healing prayer to calm things down. At that point, Sandmann and others surrounded him, and refused to move.
Here's my take:
The MAGA hat is as much a symbol of hate as a Nazi armband or a KKK robe. Anyone who wears the hat DESERVES to be mocked. Although Sandmann claims he was smiling at Phillips, it sure looks like a smirk to me. Since his group was also chanting "build the wall", his story is immediately suspect.
So, Mr. Sandmann, if you are trying to blame the other guy, it's only your dream.
