Mr. Sandmann, bring me a dream

The smirking teen seen mocking a Native American Vietnam vet in D.C. the other day has been identified as Nick Sandmann, a junior at Covington Catholic high school. The man he was confronting was Nathan Phillips, a recent widower, and an elder in his community.

As always, there are conflicting stories about what happened.

Sandmann and his fellow students were there for the "March for Life" rally, and Phillips was there for the Indigenous Peoples March.

Sandmann and his group are saying that some blacks in a group called the Hebrew Israelites were harassing them because they were wearing MAGA hats. Sandmann told CNN that he was trying to defuse the altercation between his group and the Hebrew Israelites.

According to Phillips, however, he sensed that the situation was getting out of control, so he started beating on his drum and chanting a healing prayer to calm things down. At that point, Sandmann and others surrounded him, and refused to move.

    Here's my take:

The MAGA hat is as much a symbol of hate as a Nazi armband or a KKK robe. Anyone who wears the hat DESERVES to be mocked. Although Sandmann claims he was smiling at Phillips, it sure looks like a smirk to me. Since his group was also chanting "build the wall", his story is immediately suspect.

So, Mr. Sandmann, if you are trying to blame the other guy, it's only your dream.

Covington Catholic high is closed today as a precaution. True to form, Trump said that the students at Covington Catholic High School "have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be" but says he hopes the teens will use the attention for good, and "maybe even to bring people together."

Arizona -- Yes I agree with you. I've seen all the videos played again and again as well as the discussions. I think the public can tell the difference between a smile and a smirk. Now I believe that most of the kids are probably just good kids that would not do some of this stuff individually. But place a MAGA cap on their heads and put them in a crowd, then they become a part of the crowd behavior.

Finally my experience is that the kids at that age reflect what they have learned from their parents. Maybe their parents also wear MAGA hats and embrace the rhetoric of Trump. If that's the case, then Trump himself bears responsibility for the genuine hate that these kids seem to be showing in their facial expressions.

Their side is just wrong. They vote though. Hate begets hate and fear is a primary motivation. The conman knew that and harnessed it to his advantage.

The real cause is the Catholic school; they get likely too much indoctrination related to how good Trump/Pence are for the country (read abortion/ birthcontrol) ; 90% of Catholics are for Trump.

Dutch -- I think you confused Catholics with evangelicals.

Vox, October 3, 2018: White evangelicals are the only religious group to support Trump

59 percent of Catholics view Trump negatively according to a PRRI poll.

    Dutch:

I'm related to a couple of Catholics who voted for Trump strictly because of the abortion issue, but he is actually not well liked by Catholics in general.

According to the Gallup polls, Trump's approval rating with Catholics is only 38%. The group that he has the highest approval rating with is Mormons, at 61%, and lowest with Muslims, at 18%. Although his approval rating with Christian evangelicals is higher than any group, they would be included in the "protestant" group, which overall gives him a 48% approval rating.

Not all Catholics are as committed to church teachings as my mother-in-law was. Roughly half of all abortions are performed on Catholic women, and 98% of Catholic American women have used birth control at some point in their lives, in spite of the fact that churches "humane vitae" doctrine specifically prohibits it.

I 'm wondering about that; the Catholics I met kind of hide their feelings but are super hypocrites related to what they vote for; most of them are against abortion and therefore vote GOP. But yeah "evangelicals" or Catholics; both live in la la land anyway. Also the Catholic teachings are in line with the Pence/Trump doctrine as is shown by the kids with their Trump hats on.

I'm thinking that if that boy would have gotten into the face of a black man, he would have gotten an ass beating. The boy needs to be taught a lesson of life.

Nicholas Sandmann just filed a $250 million defamation suit against the Washington Post. $250 million just happens to be what Bezos paid for the paper when he bought it.

When I was in basic training in the Army, smart ass kids like him got a "blanket party" in the middle of the night, which involved getting whacked with bars of soap wrapped in socks by several members of your platoon.

    It worked.
