I would be extremely surprised if Anonymous isn't a very senior person, someone that has national name recognition. The NY times is betting there future credible as leading investigation journalism on this. They are suggesting this is their version of Deep Throat.
Its just an opinion piece, but I am speculating that Anonymous is giving them far more inside information and documents, which is what trump is most afraid of. The OP-ed is just warning shot at trump that there are many people within the government that firmly believe he his a very dangerous asshole of the first order.
It is easy to imagine this occurring:
trump: "I want Hillary Clinton arrested and immediately sent to Gitmo"
WH attorney: "Mr President that would be against the law. nobody would carry out those orders"
Trump: "Why is against the law? I am the President, can't I have anybody arrested?"
WH attorney: "No Sir, you can't"
Trump: "OK, then I making a new law right now that says I can have anybody I want arrested"
WH attorney: "Sorry Mr President, you can do that either"
... All these kind of "off-the-rails" conversations are ultimately leaked to various hard news reporters by high senior staff and elected officials.
