High level people retain their security clearance so they can quickly easily be included on specific issues they are experts on. Say tomorrow, or next week, or next month there is a extreme serious terrorist action taken, former government officials can be contacted immediately and detailed information can be shared.
Also, talking heads on TV are suggesting that trump could use this president power to shut down Mueller. trump does not need to fire Mueller, all trump has to do is revoke all of Mueller security clearances, and Mueller can't access 95% of the evidence obtained by the FBI, only thing he could touch would be information that is already public.... This theory is a bit on the fringe of possibilities, but there is little doubt that if trump feels boxed in, and feels he needs to go nuclear, every option is on the table, including revoking Mueller's security access. With trump every option is always on the table, no action is too extreme, no matter if its legal or ethical... Hell, he doesn't care if The Supreme Court rules against him many months after the fact, if the damage is done, and can't be undone, so what if the SC says "You can't do that.... Next time"
