Is the USA drifting to a one-party state?

Democrats were still the largest political party with more than 42 million voters (compared with 30 million Republicans and 24 million independents). But in 2011 Democrats numbers shrank 800,000, and from 2008 they were down by 1.7 million, or 3.9%.[22]

Let's Put All Democrats In Jail

What would the charge be? Simply being or voting for democrats? Want to go back to the days when Nazis rounded up people? How to identify a democrat? Interrogation in a dark room with one hot lamp shining in a face? I've heard waterboarding is a useful technique.

Are the people who wish to incarcerate all of us sure they have a big enough prison or jail? I know arresting all of us will be a monumental task, because some of us believe the second amendment would apply in that situation, my prerogative would be, come and take us, if you think you can. Bring on your gestapo!

A couple of words about "welfare".

IMO, there are two types. "Social programs" which are supposed to benefit the poor and working class by offering low income housing, food for the hungry and needy, healthcare for those who are ill and cannot afford to buy HC insurance, most of the time, these programs are called entitlements.

The second type is corporate welfare, IMO, this is defined as tax cuts given to the wealthy who are supposedly the job creators, as history shows, these tax cuts are anything but job creators, because the wealthy hordes the money they received in the form of tax cuts. Tax cuts are called incentives, as Wisconsinites have witnessed in recent months, a large rich manufacturer has received $4B in incentives, they are supposed to create lots and lots of jobs, but, the corporation has been released of all liability for spoilage of our environment, plus, the state cites eminent domain as a tool to steal a property owner's land and not pay them a fair price for it, a land grab is now occurring in southeastern Wisconsin.

The number of party numbers means little to me. Most party members do very little except vote in the primaries, send in their $100 check, and come to the rallies when the circus rolls into town. And there might be some minor electioneering tasks to be handed out a weeks before the election, but my experience is that most party members do not volunteer in such a way. In fact, the parties themselves do not want their masses to do much more than that; more involvement would be bigger contests for power and influence within the party.

McCarthyism put 10m Americans and 1m Canadians on a secret list of subversives circa 1960--and without computers. While not putting too many people in jail, McCarthyism lost opportunities for those on this list. People with influential jobs often lost them just because they knew someone who attended a Pete Seeger concert. In another internet forum, I am sensing that right-wing forces would like to institute a similar program--to get all the left-wingers to shut up. Are we heading in this direction?

I know a few people on welfare--and most of them are unemployable for a 40-hour week (some could work 10 to 20 hours). They go through about five or more different social programs to get a subsistence living. To me, a lot of welfare programs would no longer be needed if everyone is given a Guaranteed Basic Income.

I don't see progressive taxes as punishing the rich. I would call it a social contract that allows the wealthy to create and enjoy wealth because of the strong civil society. If your rich friends can't understand that, tell them to immigrate to Somalia where there are very few taxes.

If people wish to dissolve the 2-3 party system as we know it, you end up with a dictatorship. Ask Dutch about WWII and how Hitler reigned and snuffed out dissenters.

Arresting and incarcerating individuals and groups is as absurd as it sounds. Granted, years ago we had witch hunts, some of which accused US citizens of being communists, and during our wars, many ethnic groups were rounded up and sent to internment/prison camps only because of their race, or the country they came from. Amerikan history is repeating itself, on 9/11. the Bush administration rounded up people of middle-eastern descent and held them without due process of law, much like Italian immigrants, Japanese and others were rounded up during WWII. Most recently, the present administration using ICE and CBP have gone door to door rounding up Mexican and Latino immigrants citing security reasons or concerns. We have a modern day dictatorship right now, a president in charge and his administration circumventing all laws of our land. He has stepped on people's civil rights and incarcerated hundreds if not thousands of people with no due process of law, and our government officials, e.g., congresspersons, legislators, representatives have remained numb/dumb and done nothing about it.

Yeap, this country is definitely fucked up, and it's getting worse by the day.

You claimed you didn't know that FDR used executive orders to implement programs to benefit US citizens, I encourage you to watch documentaries by film maker Ken Burns, the Roosevelts, I also encourage you to watch PBS Frontline documentaries whenever you have the time to do so. I good doc is Trump Takeover of the GOP.

Dock an excellent view from you. Yes I have to totally agree that the direction we are heading in is downhill. Especially if you rip babies out of their mother's arms then a country has no longer values.

I thought the days we hit rock bottom were the ones following 9/11, when MSM reported that Muslims (specifically) were being arrested and detained without being charged and without the people being afforded an attorney while being held. Those were sad and bad days to say the least, our government trampled all over people's civil rights, I was shocked, appalled and angered at what was going on.

Flash forward to today, the tearing apart of families, this nation has been going downhill since I don't know when. It's sad to be witnessing the slow decline of what Amerika is supposed to stand for.

    Dockadams:

The multi-party system is part of what makes western democracy work. It keeps all the parties, including the governing party, within certain boundaries. McCarthyism could have been taken down a longer path, but opposition eventually exposed it for what it was. When it became felt that continuing to support McCarthyism would lead to electoral losses, the politicians stopped this witchhunt. But without the opposition, it would have grown into a much more sinister force.

In a like manner, I see all the protests as a gathering of political forces for the November elections. 50% of Americans normally do not vote. If 10% of those are finding the incentive to vote against Mr. Trump, that will topple many R legislators--even in R districts and states.

The rise of Hitler in German politics should be noted. He seemed to have a deliberate plan to slowly inculcate the German people into behaving a certain way. If a German person did not love him, he/she should fear him. I'm not seeing the fear aspect yet from the new R party, but it should be watched closely. The Nazis didn't have to put all their opponents in jail; many more were fearful and kept silent. I'm not seeing any version of the Nazi brownshirts, but I'm sure there are enough Americans willing to fill these roles if such a group were organized. Scary!

As a Canadian, I don't get the full USA news. Despite being reasonably knowledgeable of American governance, the executive order came as a bit of surprise to me: Mr. Trump somehow brought it to my headlines. I was under the impression that the president had to work within the confines Congress and previous Congresses had set for the position. But that is not the case. Even as early as three years ago, I watched a documentary on FDR. I'm pretty sure the documentary emphasized his deal-making skills to put the New Deal together. I just can't recall it saying he used his EO privileges, which is what FDR Wikipedia article stated. It seems that Americans like to keep the EO aspect of their governance less known.

Political parties have all sorts of internal purges after their internal elections. This is a natural force, not something Mr. Trum invented. If high and low ranking members do not get behind their leader (or at least stay out of the way), they stand a good chance of being tactfully purged. And if the leader fails to deliver the votes, that leader is also eventually purged. Mr Trump can deliver 30% of the vote to the R way; the R party will continue to reshape itself in his way-----until he fails to do that.
